Meet our short stay foster family. This is momma (calico) Elga and her two boys, Oak (orange) and Woody (tabby). These guys were just a little shy and needed a bit of one-on-one "humans are nice" time in foster care. They are the sweetest, most adorable cats and not only love humans, but they also love companionship with each other too. They are always cuddling and rubbing into each other. So sweet. The time has come to say goodbye to our beautiful little foster babies, The Fairly Odd Parents crew, that we have had since they were about 10 days old. Bottlefeeding is one of my favorite foster types to care for.

There is no greater joy in fostering for me than when you are responsible for nursing helpless little babies who are completely dependent on you for survival and success, then seeing them grow up to be super social, beautiful stable kittens.

We will missed these crazy guys, but know they will find forever homes right away.

Cosmo & Timmy are adopted, but if you would like to adopt one of the others, please contact Humane Society of Durham Region. Bottlebabies are the best! 🥰❤️🐾🐈

These little cuties left us today to find their forever homes at Lakefield Animal Welfare Society. They were so fun to work with and watch them switch from hissy scared kitties, to sweet loving little purring machines. We will miss them 🥰❤️🐾🐈

We also have in our care these two beautiful boys who are staying with us for some socializing. Both Dwight & Peanut had a very big fear of humans when we got them and have come a long way so far. They still need a bit more work, but have made huge improvements from being terrified, to enjoying human touch (sometimes). 🥰❤️🐾🐈

Meet our newest foster babies!! The Tea kittens. Chai, Pekoe & Earl Grey! These guys were rescued out of the inside of a wall in a barn. They needed a bit of TLC when we got them to get their healthy up, but they are doing great now! Sooooo adorable! They look a bit of a mess as they are just learning to eat wet food (gruel) and it is a messy time 😆 ❤️🥰🐈🐾

Why We Started Opening Cages

We are a mother & daughter partnership inspired by our journey to help animals in the shelter system. It all started in 2016 when we officially became foster parents for the Humane Society of Durham Region. Over the course of more than three years, we have looked after more than 80 kittens and cats! Each one came with a unique story, but it was Penny that sparked our idea to launch Opening Cages. In November 2018 we brought home a special foster cat named Penny. She came to stay with us “on vacation” from the shelter that she had been calling home for ten months. This cat had an extremely sad story as her previous owner had passed away leaving Penny confused and scared. Penny was originally adopted out of the shelter to a new family but they were not a good match for each other and she was returned.

To potential adopters, Penny seemed miserable and cranky, but the reality was that being in the shelter for so long scared her. When we brought her into our home on her "vacation" to explore her room we were shocked to see that she had trouble with walking. It appeared as though there was something physically wrong with her legs, but we later realized that it was just a side effect from being inside a cage for so long waiting for her forever home! It was heartbreaking!

Penny was depressed and very sleepy for the first little while. She slowly adjusted to her surroundings and eventually transformed into an entirely different cat. Her spirits had uplifted and her true personality shined through. A sweet and loveable cat that was completely ADOPTABLE.

We quickly realized that this was most likely a serious problem for shelters everywhere. Penny’s story touched our hearts. We felt an overwhelming responsibility to take action and help animals in similar situations get out of their cages faster. Together we came up with Opening Cages! A project focused on improving the adoption rate while educating pet owners and supporting foster parents along the way.
