Thanks to Levitt Leads for this great post. Boundaries are so important and are needed for keeping everyone safe and comfortable, especially kids.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Thanks to Canine Arthritis Management for this important reminder. Can you recognize signs of pain in your canine companion?

Arthritis and joint pain can have a profound impact on a dog's behaviour and overall quality of life.

When a dog experiences chronic pain, it can lead to increased irritability, restlessness, and even aggression.

Imagine trying to navigate the world while constantly experiencing discomfort – it's no wonder that some dogs may lash out in frustration.

As responsible pet owners, it's our duty to recognise the signs of pain in our furry companions and take proactive steps to address their needs, whether through pain management medication, physical therapy, or lifestyle adjustments.

Looking at the why behind a behaviour is the best thing we can do for our dogs, and ourselves.

When we see behaviour for what it really is, we realise it’s not personal, just practical for our dogs at the time.

We all need to work together

🌻 Being part of the solution to those with reactive, anxious, dogs in training. 🌻

Today as I walked my dogs I began to approach a man with his dog. I could hear him reassuring his dog so I pulled mine off the trail a good 6-10’ and went to let him pass. You could visibly see the relief as he realized I wouldn’t have to pass him on the trail and that I had control of my dogs. As he passed, he thanked me for understanding and explained that his dog is very worried about dogs. (Sure enough his dog lit up loud as he passed us).

This isn’t an abnormal experience in my day to day walks with my own personal dogs. People thank me ALL the time when I give extra space or help them advocate for their dog. I’ve had folks get emotional because I stepped off the trail so they could work their pattern games as I’ve passed. You can see the relief in their eyes. And more specifically their dog’s body language.

Owning a reactive, worried, anxious dog is hard. It’s a very lonely feeling. It is months or years of work before it begins to feel like it’s a manageable situation. And it feels somewhat like no one is in your corner. It feels alone. It also is filled with embarrassing and frustrating emotions.

Everywhere you walk - you run into off leash dogs or dogs that come rushing in and aren’t under control. “It’s ok he’s friendly” are words that make your heart rate spike. Sometimes just getting from point A to B in daily life is exhausting. And one off leash dog that rushes in can set back weeks of hard work. Passing on leash dogs can be just as hard as the over zealous dog hits the end of their 6’ leash to “say hi”.

…And YES it is the owner of the reactive, worried, anxious dog’s responsibility to keep their dog safe. Yes, it is their responsibility to advocate and work on their dogs emotional response to triggers. Yes - it is not “the worlds problem” that their dog struggles.

BUT - if we all worked together as a community to show support. (Heck this shouldn’t even be considered being extra supportive- it should just be normal day to day behaviour) we can make the community a better place for all of our dogs.

What if we always leashed our dogs or put them into a controlled position to pass?

What if we didn’t let our dogs hit the end of the 6’ leash on the trail as we pass someone struggling ?

What if we stepped off the trail or gave extra space when we saw it needed ?

What if instead of comments like “yikes, you have your hands full” we said “good for you on trying to work through this” or asked them if they are working with a trainer & offered the name of a trainer you knew ? It’s scary the # of folks that respond with a sharp comment to “sorry we don’t say hi” with comments about how the owner is clearly the problem or if the dog can’t say hi they shouldn’t be out in public. I personally get these comments when I sit day train dogs off on the side, or am playing pattern games or advocate for space. So if I’m getting the comments - my clients are too.

What if we as a dog community all played a part in the solution? What if we supported those struggling ? What if we encouraged those doing the hard work ? And what if we empowered those feeling alone that there is help available.

Finally what if instead of viewing our walks through a lens of entitlement (my dog is fine, my dog is friendly, my dog this & my dog that) we tried viewing our walks through a lens of compassion and empathy for others on their journey?

Just my early morning two cents. And a photo of Meeko for the Meeko fans as he is the true embodiment of kind 🧡

While mistakes happen, it’s just a regular occurrence now that, another dog will run over regardless of lead on, change of direction, communication.

Until you are the one with the nervous, vulnerable, reactive, recovering dog, it’s hard to understand the repercussions of this. But it can make walks unpleasant, the anticipation of what could happen, anxiety inducing.

We deserve our peaceful walks back, our dogs deserve to stay on track with training. We should live in a world where dogs are under control.

Our Journey

Bianca is the owner of and head trainer for Magnolia Dog Training. Her training journey began, as many do, by rescuing her own reactive dog. She hired a trainer that specializes in reactivity and aggression for help. As they began working together, she became interested in the science behind how dogs learn and the positive, force-free ways to help with various behavioural issues. Within a month, she began joining this trainer on the weekends for private lessons and going to as many group classes possible to gain more knowledge. She mentored under this trainer for about a year and a half, the main focus being on aggression/reactivity. In that time, she worked hands on with clients, starting with walks, walk and trains, assisting in group classes including a reactive dog class, private puppy session and moving more into dog-dog aggression and some dog-human aggression. She has completed the Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Foundations course, Walks & Wags Pet First Aid Certification, on-line courses and seminars and also received her biggest achievement so far, her certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. Continuing education is key and Bianca regularly attends seminars, workshops and events, as well as takes on-line courses and participates in webinars. She hopes to enroll in the Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Professional program soon. We look forward to helping and guiding you with your training journey!
