Bianca had the pleasure of working with Steve, a blind foster dog through and his incredible foster family. Their past experience with a blind dog has made them the perfect support system for Steve as he learns new skills. We focused on teaching him to settle in his bed, building independence through scent games, hand targeting and calming techniques for when he gets overwhelmed. Steve's eagerness to learn is truly inspiring!

Happy 4th birthday to this beautiful girl, Luna! 🎉🐾❤️ Everyone send her some love!
I got to spend some extra time walking with Luna over the weekend while her family was away. We visited a new location each walk and got to explore so many beautiful places. Luna is dog reactive which can make neighbourhood walks and walks in general quite difficult. She would get over stimulated regularly while navigating the neighbourhood, even when quiet, leading to shortened walks and a lengthy decompression time once home. Now, we can navigate that space mostly stress free but best of all, we can now hop in the car and go on a short drive to various spaces and when not 30+ degrees, she can do a whole hour without issues. It's amazing to think back to when we first met and all the hard work and dedication her pawrents have put in since. Keep it up, it gets better!

One thing I truly admire about our community is how you all adapt your expectations based on your dogs' unique needs and preferences. Dogs are incredibly resilient creatures, but they also have their limits.
When a dog repeatedly tries to communicate discomfort or distress through subtle signals like yawning, lip licking, or avoiding certain activities, and those signals go unnoticed or ignored, they may feel compelled to escalate their behaviour to be heard.
This can manifest as growling, snapping, or biting – behaviours that are often misunderstood as aggression - when they are, in fact, desperate attempts to communicate.
By learning to recognise and respond to these signals, we can prevent potentially dangerous situations and foster better communication with our canine companions.
Our book Why Don't You Listen talks all about the signs of distress a dog might show, and is presented in a fun and engaging way. Aimed at children but great for the whole family!

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?
The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.
I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.
"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"
"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."
"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."
"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."
In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

It's been a couple weeks since I last saw Dutch and his family. He is progressing so well in all his exercises so we added some new tasks to begin working on. Recalls are so important and maintaining it is even more important. I always recommend going back to the basics with easy recall games like hide n seek and ensuring your recall is rewarding and fun. With Dutch, we are beginning with 'Scatter recall" which builds a solid base to build off of. The only goal is that as soon as you move, they follow to the new location, get a food reward and repeat. We eventually add our recall word to this because it becomes predictable for them to return to us making the pairing more successful than saying from the start when they may get distracted and not return quickly. If they get distracted, give a couple seconds to process. If they still don't come back, you can add in a tongue click, kissy sound, getting low to the ground and spreading your arms out or moving a bit closer/to another spot to draw them over to you. Be sure to make it easier or change your environment if they are struggling. Enrichment is so important for all dogs. I put together this video of some of my dogs favorite toys. If I had to guess Charlie's favorite, I would say the Kong wobbler. He's been using it since he was around 10 weeks old and still goes right for it. He even knows what "want your wobble?" means and will go over and bat it with his paw 🥰 Daisy has been loving the new hide a squirrel🐿 they got for Christmas. She can pull them all out and often gets distracted tossing them around and squeaking them 😆 What's your dogs favorite enrichment toy or game?
Quick controlled sniffs turned into a lovely on leash play a few minutes later. Of course I was too excited and didn't catch it on video but I'm so impressed with Abby & Phoebe and their handlers! I had a feeling with a slow intro these two could learn some skills and maybe even make a friend. Bianca is the owner of and head trainer for Magnolia Dog Training. Her training journey began, as many do, by rescuing her own reactive dog. She hired a trainer that specializes in reactivity and aggression for help. As they began working together, she became interested in the science behind how dogs learn and the positive, force-free ways to help with various behavioural issues. Within a month, she began joining this trainer on the weekends for private lessons and going to as many group classes possible to gain more knowledge. She mentored under this trainer for about a year and a half, the main focus being on aggression/reactivity. In that time, she worked hands on with clients, starting with walks, walk and trains, assisting in group classes including a reactive dog class, private puppy session and moving more into dog-dog aggression and some dog-human aggression. She has completed the Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Foundations course, Walks & Wags Pet First Aid Certification, on-line courses and seminars and also received her biggest achievement so far, her certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. Continuing education is key and Bianca regularly attends seminars, workshops and events, as well as takes on-line courses and participates in webinars. She hopes to enroll in the Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Professional program soon. We look forward to helping and guiding you with your training journey!
