Willy Bronze "RTR Little Willy" W***y the world famous Steer Wrestling Horse

W***y`s home town of Donalda is recognizing W***y`s remarkable contribution to the sport of Steer Wrestling with a life size bronze statue depicting him at work. The " W***y Bronze Project " led by energetic volunteers from the Donalda and Community for the Arts Society will see the installment of a life-size bronze sculpture of a galloping W***y, carrying a leaning bulldogger about to grip the ho

rns of a fleeing steer. The proposed location for the sculture is on Railroad Avenue with the pictureque coulee providing a suitable backdrop for the artwork. Planning for the project has been underway for more than a year and fund raising initiatives to help offset the costs of the project, currently budgeted at $200.000, have already begun. They include a Thanks-giving poker rally from Donalda, Golf tournament at the Pheasantback Golf Course and the sale of a limited number of maquettes ( small models ) of the final statue design.

Thank you to all the participants in the W***y Bronze "RTR Little W***y" this weekend. Thank you for supporting this event and thank you for not leaving any evidence behind that anyone was here. Every year you leave nothing but good memories.

I only got photos of the day parking but every parking area was full on the weekend.

Congratulations to the Cassidy Family and their exceptional horse “W***y” on the induction into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

He was born in 1986, so at the advanced age of 34, one of the greatest steer wrestling horses, if not THE greatest, RTR Little W***y, best known across North America as W***y, has passed away.

Owned by Greg Cassidy of Donalda, Alta., W***y earned well over $3 million. The big bay gelding carried four cowboys to World Steer Wrestling titles in Las Vegas: Rope Myers in 2001, Canadian Lee Graves in 2005, Jason Miller in 2007 and Luke Branquinho in 2008.

W***y also earned six Canadian Steer Wrestling titles for competitors Greg Cassidy in 2000, Curtis Cassidy in 2006, Lee Graves in both 2003 and 2005 and Cody Cassidy in both 2008 and 2009. He also earned an Olympic Gold Medal for Rope Myers in 2002.

In 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 he was voted as the CPRA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year. In 2004, he earned second place in the voting for the AQHA-PRCA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year, then in 2008, he earned top honours when he was voted as the AQHA-PRCA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year.

This year the W***y Bronze Poker Rally will be a trail ride to make it easier on the volunteers. We will have volunteers out watching all the gates where there are cattle so that participants will not have to dismount to open gates.
Saturday end of the trail meal will be a bowl of chili, bun and dessert for $15.

September 24 & 25 will be the W***y Bronze trail ride. Riders will ride out on a marked trail ride with no check points.

2021 W***y Bronze Poker Rally turned out to be a very successful
weekend with beautiful weather and wonderful people wanting to ride this beautiful valley. Thank you to all volunteers that offered their time, it takes aproximately 20 - 25 volunteers per day to host this poker rally. Our small community is blessed with good people willing to help. There was 205 riders on Saturdays trail and 147 riders on Sundays trail. Thank you everyone for coming and supporting this fundraiser.

2020 was our best year for the W***y Bronze Poker Rally because Greg Cassidy with his family and friends were able to attend.

Weather was windy but warm and the highest number of riders,
Saturday we had approximately 220 riders and Sunday 190 riders.

Our Story

W***y`s home town of Donalda is recognizing W***y`s remarkable contribution to the sport of Steer Wrestling with a life size bronze statue depicting him at work. The " W***y Bronze Project " led by energetic volunteers from the Donalda and Community will see the installment of a life-size bronze sculpture of a galloping W***y, carrying a leaning bulldogger about to grip the horns of a fleeing steer. The proposed location for the sculpture is on Railroad Avenue with the pictureque coulee providing a suitable backdrop for the artwork. Plans for the project started in 2009 with a target budget at $200.000. First fundraising initiative to help offset the costs of the project was W***y Bronze Poker Rally in 2010 and the poker rallies continue every year around the end of September to raise funds for the next fundraising project. The sale of a limited number of miquettes ( small models ) of the final statue design will raise funds to complete the life size bronze statue of W***y, our famous steer wrestling horse.
