❤️ BREED OF THE WEEK ❤️
🐾 Meet Polish Lowland Sheepdog, AKA the PON. This versatile herding dog is believed to have originated in the 13th century in the pastoral traditions of Poland. During the Middle Ages, they became an indispensable asset to shepherds and farmers, and their strong herding instincts made them ideal for managing livestock, particularly sheep. Their numbers dwindled during World War II where they almost became extinct. They were recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 2001.
🐾 PONs is known for its long, shaggy coat, which can be white, black, gray, and brown. Their thick fur provides protection against harsh weather conditions, making it well-suited for various climates. In terms of temperament, they are loyal and affectionate with their families, often forming close bonds with their human companions. They are also excellent watchdogs. However, their strong herding instincts might lead them to try to herd smaller pets or young children.
🐾 Being wary of strangers, training needs to start from early puppyhood. Being a territorial herding dog, they can be on the stubborn side, so they require a handler who is confident, patient and consistent. They respond well to rewards such as treats, praise, and playtime. Harsh training methods should be avoided as it can cause fear and anxiety, potentially leading to aggression or other behavioral issues.
🐾 PONs is considered high-energy and need a minimum of 1-2 hours of exercise per day. A large fenced-in yard is highly recommended where they can freely run. Due to their herding background, PONs have a strong work ethic and enjoy tasks that give them a sense of purpose. Engaging them in activities like herding trials, advanced obedience, or even dog sports like flyball or rally can be highly beneficial. Remember, a well-exercised and mentally stimulated Polish Lowland Sheepdog is more likely to be a well-behaved and delightful companion.
