“I just don’t want them barking at the door.”

If that’s your daily struggle — you’re definitely not the only one. Teaching calm door manners takes practice, but it’s absolutely doable with clear steps and consistency:

➡️ Create a calm routine. Start by teaching a solid “place” or “sit & stay” command near the door. This gives your dog a job to do instead of rushing, barking, or getting overstimulated.

➡️ Reward the calm moments. When someone arrives and your dog stays quiet or holds their position, reinforce it right away. Calm behavior should always pay off.

➡️ Practice short greetings often. Don’t wait for real guests — do repetitions. Knock on the door, ring the bell, open it a few inches… and rehearse the calm response over and over.

➡️ Use management tools. Gates, pens, or simply blocking access can help prevent rehearsing the unwanted behavior while they learn the new routine.

➡️ Don’t feed into the barking. Ignore the noise — barking doesn’t get them attention or interaction. Save your rewards, structure, and guidance for the composed behavior you want to see.

Calm door manners aren’t built in a day, but with repetition, structure, and a balanced training approach, your dog will learn that being quiet and settled at the door is the quickest way to earn what they want. 🐾✨

❤ BREED OF THE WEEK ❤

🐾 Meet the Newfoundland dog, whose origins began on the rugged island of Newfoundland, Canada. While their precise lineage is not entirely clear, it is believed that their ancestors were a mix of European dogs brought to Newfoundland by explorers and settlers in the 17th century, which may include the Great Pyrenees, Mastiffs, and possibly Portuguese Water Dogs. The Newfoundland dogs were essential to the daily lives of the fishermen, helping with tasks such as pulling in nets, hauling loads of fish, and even rescuing people from the water. By the 18th and 19th centuries, they gained international recognition for its remarkable abilities and friendly disposition, and was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1886.

🐾 The Newfoundland dog is renowned for its unique blend of physical traits, temperament, and abilities, making it a standout among canine breeds. They possess a thick, double-layer coat that is water-resistant, which helps protect them from harsh weather conditions, especially in cold and wet environments. They come in a variety of colours including in black, brown, grey, or Landseer (white with black markings). A distinctive feature they have are their webbed feet, which contribute to its excellent swimming capabilities. Despite their formidable size, they are known for their gentle and calm demeanor and are often referred to as "gentle giants".

🐾 It's best to start training a Newfoundland puppy as early as possible. Early socialization and basic obedience training can help establish good behaviour and prevent the development of undesirable habits. Given their natural swimming ability and life-saving instincts, they are often trained for water rescue. This specialized training should be introduced by the time they are 4 months of age. Newfoundlands are sensitive dogs that respond poorly to harsh training methods, so its important to focus on positive reinforcement and redirect inappropriate behaviour rather than using punishment.

🐾 Newfoundlands are not high-energy dogs, but they do require at least 30 to 60 minutes of activity each day, which can be broken up into multiple sessions. Regular walks are a great way to provide exercise and mental stimulation. Due to their thick, double coats, they can overheat easily, so its recommend that exercise is done during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Originally bred to work alongside fishermen, they have a strong work ethic and can pull heavy loads and performing a variety of tasks. In summary, the Newfoundland dog is a remarkable breed with a unique combination of size, strength, and gentle nature.

“I just want my dog to come when I call them.”

If this sounds like you — you’re not alone. Reliable recall is one of the most important (and most life-saving) skills we can teach our dogs.

Here’s how to build it step by step:

➡️ Start small. Begin practicing in a quiet, low-distraction space where your dog can succeed. The fewer things pulling their attention away, the clearer the learning.

➡️ Use a long line for safety. This gives your dog freedom to move while still keeping them safe and connected to you as they learn what “come” actually means.

➡️ Celebrate every return. When they choose YOU over the environment, reward big. High-value treats, excited praise, toys — whatever makes your dog light up. The stronger the payoff, the faster they’ll want to come running.

➡️ Increase the challenge slowly. Gradually add distance, movement, and distractions. Don’t jump from your living room to a busy dog park — build the skill like a muscle.

➡️ Stay positive. Always. Never punish your dog for coming back late or after checking something out first. If coming to you feels scary or unpredictable, they’ll stop wanting to do it.

Reliable recall doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency, clarity, and lots of reinforcement, your dog will learn that running back to you is always worth it. 💛

Dog Training Info

Sit Happens’ mission is to reduce the number of dogs re-homed or surrendered to rescue groups by providing affordable activities and education to dog owners. We accomplish this by taking the stress out of dog training by providing convenient and quality training that gets results quickly.

In-home training gets fast results!

  • By training in your home and neighborhood, we practice around in real life situations and distractions your dog encounters every day.

  • When training at a facility, dogs usually learn to listen in that environment only. Once you get home, the dog does not behave the same way as in class.
