Is it warm? Is it cold? Is it spring? Is it winter? Who actually knows? Besides messing with the roads, this warmer/colder weirdo weather is PERFECT for deer ticks! We are starting to see cases already, what it means is that those $&@! ticks never stopped biting. We encourage everyone to start their prescription tick prevention product as soon as possible!

FLUFFY FRIDAY! 😍

Padfoot is the star 🌟 this week of Fluffy Friday. It was so hard to choose who to post, but just look at her! 😍

She is Dr. Bargen’s cat, who she brought her in for her annual dental this week.

She also happens to be a polydactyl cat, meaning she was born with extra toes! (Swipe to see her feet in the 2nd picture)

Can anybody guess how many toes she has? Who else loves toe beans; and what could be better than a cat with extra ones?!

Let’s talk about rabies!

Rabies is a virus 🦠 contagious between all species, including us!

It is transmitted between animals through bites and saliva. It attacks the brain and neurological system and if untreated is always fatal.

Here in Manitoba, we have one of the highest rates across Canada due to our high population of skunks 🦨, raccoons 🦝, bats 🦇, etc. that love to spread it around. This is why it is so important to keep your pets up to date with their rabies vaccines! (We can also discuss titre testing for interested owners)

It is critical that you never pick up an injured or downed bat/racoon/skunk/etc with your bare hands as you can easily contract rabies from them. (Veterinary staff are typically vaccinated for rabies to manage their risk levels)

Thank goodness we have vaccines, right?! Give us a call if you aren’t sure whether or not your pet is up to date with their rabies vaccine and we’ll check that out for you!

Jaz came in last month to get her vaccine updated and took it like a champ!

What a lovely winter we’re having! ❄️

We are proud to sponsor Steinbach Family Resource Centre once again this year! They connect families to education, resources and support and are dedicated to serving growing families with children across Southeast Manitoba.

Similar to last year, they are doing a scavenger hunt in February over the course of 20 days, starting on the 1st. We will not be hosting at our clinic, but rather at L.A. Barkman Park (North side). Join in to win some amazing prizes!

Scratch scratch, itch itch.

One of the most frustrating problems a dog can have - allergies! Allergies have lots of symptoms - pets can be chewing themselves, losing hair, have repeated skin and ear infections, or lick themselves raw. It’s never nice to see your dog uncomfortable due to allergies!!

You’ve tried home remedies, you’ve tried changing the diet, all to no avail!

That’s where we come in with prescription medications like Apoquel and Cytopoint.

Meet Natasha - the newest member of our team!

Joining us at the end of December, she is settling in fast! She has a big Lab x named Hank 🐕 and two spicy cats! 🐈 🐈‍⬛

Does she look familiar to some of you? That’s probably because you’ve seen her at Clearspring Kennels, where she was the manager! She came to Canada all the way from the UK and loves everything animal related!

We’re so lucky to have you with us Natasha, and can’t wait to see what the future brings with you here!

P.S. the sweet girl giving side eye is ‘Ember’, one of Natasha’s favourite dogs she previously saw at daycare! She loved seeing her again for her kennel cough vaccine today.

Pudim may have a grumpy face, but he has the sweetest personality!

This 13 year old Persian came in to have a geriatric blood panel done yesterday. We recommend annual - biannual bloodwork to be performed for all senior pets. As our beloved pets age quicker than us humans, it is vital to have bloodwork done, similar to us having it done yearly as well. This will give us an insight to what’s going on inside your pets’ body and how we proceed with any medications we prescribe, food we recommend, and overall organ function in the body.

Watch RVT Bethany take a dental X-ray! Dental radiographs are very important because it helps us decide whether a tooth is healthy or not. As you can see on the X-ray one of the teeth has suffered some bone loss, so that will need to be extracted. 🦷 #vetmed #caninedental #soundup

Watch us perform an ear swab to check for ear mites! 🕷️ This lovely girl is with @steinbachanimalrescue. The rescue noted she was scratching her ears and brought her in to get checked and treated! Ear mites are very common with outdoor cats and are transferable to dogs as well. Luckily they are also easy to treat! #vetmed #earmites #cat #rescue

Watch our RVT Chantelle pull blood on an adorable Golden puppy that was in the clinic today. Just a reminder that while supplies last, we are discounting some of our bloodwork and you can get up to $70 off! Give us a call to book your cat or dog in for some baseline bloodwork. This will screen their red and white blood cells, platelets, kidneys, liver, and more! As Dental Month has come to an end, so has our competition! We had some lovely smiles sent and even a video of a new tooth brusher in action! For the video winner we have Courtney, who is doing phenomenal job at brushing her cat Travis’ teeth! For our other prize winner we did a random draw (which was super fun btw) Maysa, Claudette’s beautiful Rottie is our 🏆!! Did you know it’s possible to brush your cats teeth as well? Here is RVT Chantelle brushing her cat’s teeth! Rowan is a good boy who likes to be wrapped in a towel so he doesn’t slide away mid-brushing. Chantelle started brushing his teeth when he was just 6 months old when his adult teeth came in, so he learned nice and young what it felt like to have his teeth brushed. We make sure to give him lots of breaks so he doesn’t feel like this is a punishment. This is an example of a ‘finger toothbrush’, while Dr. Bargen used a pet toothbrush in her video of brushing Pip’s teeth. Make sure you stay tuned for tomorrow big surprise giveaway!

Does it seem daunting to start brushing your pets teeth? We want to show you that it’s not as scary as it seems! When Dr. Bargen started training her dog Pip (seen above), she was already 3 years old! Good thing we have a few easy steps to follow to ensure brushing their teeth goes well! First, we get them used to touching their mouths and lifting their gums. Then, we like to get them used to the tooth brush, showing that it’s not scary. We have very tasty toothpaste with flavours such as chicken, malt, and vanilla, so lots of pets love getting their teeth brushed just for the yummy treat! Finally, we add the toothbrush and toothpaste and voila! We start brushing! Even if it’s once a week or one side at a time, it all helps!
