We have seen both minor to more indepth cases.

We are able to stitch and repair most lacerations, but we will refer if the injury extends to internal trauma or bones are broken/traumatized.
With the heat, wounds fester quickly which increases the risk of infection and necrotic tissue.
We would like to remind everyone to check your herds daily to assess if anyone has gotten into trouble or if there is maintenance to be done to fencing, corrals, waterers, or trailers.

What makes a laceration worthy of seeing a vet?
🚫If it is a scratch that just took some hair off, at home care is sufficient.
✅️If you can fit a finger or more in, see a large flap of skin, or if there is structural matter showing (bone or muscle) veterinary care is recommended.

Ways to keep your stock cooler:
☀️Avoid hauling stock during the heat of the day. Preferably haul between the hours of 7pm - 9am

Pink eye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting cattle worldwide. 🐮🌎🤔
It primarily manifests as inflammation of the eye's conjunctiva and cornea, leading to discomfort, impaired vision, and potential blindness if left untreated.
Common causes include:
🪰environmental factors like dust, flies
☀️ultraviolet light exposure
🧫bacterial agents such as Moraxella bovis.

There are a few vaccines available to prevent pink eye in cattle. These vaccines typically contain inactivated or modified live bacteria that stimulate the animal's immune system to produce antibodies against Moraxella bovis.
💉Vaccination can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of pink eye outbreaks on farms. However, vaccination effectiveness may vary depending on factors such as vaccine formulation, timing, and the animal's overall health status.
It's essential for cattle producers to work closely with their veterinarians to develop an effective vaccination strategy tailored to their herd's specific needs and risk factors.

Timed A.I. involves a strictly timed schedule of placing CIDRs, administering hormone injections, and keeping a watchful eye on your herd to ensure the most effective outcome.

These new castration bands deliver lidocaine freezing at the site for up to 42 days and can be used on bulls up to 250lbs. This improves animal welfare and can increase average daily gains (ADG). This is a new product that has been developed by an Alberta company that we are proud to support.

Regular equine dentals can greatly impact the health of your equine.
During a routine dental, we are able to adjust the grind of the horses jaw to help them make the best use of their feed. As well as locate and assist with possible dental issues such as broken teeth, missing teeth, packing, ulcers, or sharp points.
If your horse is dropping feed, has a foul smell, or has never had a dental before, call us to get booked in!
Claw amputations:
Occasionally we see severe lameness that progresses to non-weight bearing. This bull had a history of chronic foot rot that didn't respond to antibiotic treatment. What we see here is the infection penetrating into the joint capsule and causing septic arthritis. Once bacteria is in the joint it is very hard to treat medically. Only option from here is surgery.
Here we locate the infection, freeze the whole limb, and amputate the infected joint. This is considered a salvage procedure to get the animal healthy enough to be able to walk and clear the infection prior to being culled. Many of them walk out of the squeeze already feeling better without the infected and inflamed joint causing them pain!

Have you ever looked in a piggy's mouth?? We have!!! Boars have tusks that continue to grow throughout their life. Depending on how old they are, these tusks can begin to pose a risk to fellow pigs or their handlers. By trimming a few centimeters off of the tusk, we can promote better oral health and eliminate any potential risks. In this video you will see that one tusk was beginning to puncture the top gum line. Scours is a broad term for diarrhea in a young calf. It can progress very quickly causing severe dehydration, unwillingness to nurse, and lethargy. If symptoms are not noticed quickly, the likelyhood of a calf surviving drastically decreases. 🌼 Happy Administrative Professionals Day to our favourite VMA, Jen! 🌼 Jen has been with us for almost 4 years and has been an essential part of our business since she started. With so much of our work done on-farm, we rely on Jen to be the glue at the clinic that keeps us all together. She can often be heard laughing with our clients, or chatting with the CFIA office about exports. She knows where all of our clients are located and remembers when they typically preg test, semen test, or order meds. She greets everyone by name when they walk through our door. While we hope for the best in calvings, rarely we see congenital defects (deformities in newborn animals) that need vet assistance. Most deformities are random genetic mutations, while some can be the result of toxins. In this case we had a calf with Arthrogryposis (fused joints) and kyphosis/scoliosis (abnormal rounding of the spine). The fused joints would not allow the calf to be born vaginally so a C-section was performed to save the mom. If you have a calving issue that just doesn't make sense... sometimes it's because they just don't make sense! #etvs #cowvet #calving2024 #weirdandwonderful #deformedcalf
