🚨 Calving Emergencies: When It’s Time to Call Your Vet 🚨
Calving season can be unpredictable, and while many births go smoothly, there are times when a helping hand (or two) is essential. Knowing when to step in—and when to call your vet—can make a big difference for both cow and calf.

🔍 Watch for These Red Flags:
1️⃣ No progress after 30 minutes – If a cow or heifer is actively pushing but making no progress, it’s time to assess the situation.
2️⃣ Abnormal presentation – Legs not in the normal position, backward calf, or head turned back? These situations often require veterinary assistance.
3️⃣ Exhaustion – If the cow or heifer becomes too tired to continue, intervention may be necessary.
4️⃣ Excessive bleeding or prolapse – These are serious emergencies that need immediate attention.

👩‍⚕️ When in Doubt, Give Us a Shout
It’s always better to call sooner rather than later. Timely intervention can prevent further complications and improve outcomes for your animals. Remember, saving one calf today can mean a more productive cow for years to come.

💡 Pro tip: Have your calving kit ready to go—clean ropes, chains, l**e, and a flashlight can be lifesavers during those late-night checks.

We’re here to support you this calving season! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help or advice.

15/01/2025

Also known as lump jaw, Actinomycosis Bovis is a gram-positive bacterium that generally infects the bony structures of the mandible in many species, commonly seen in cattle.

This bacterium is considered normal in the oral and nasopharyngeal membranes. Common causes of this infection, in short, are due to stemmy rough feeds. Cattle (and other species) that have damaged the membranous tissues within their mouths are susceptible to these bacteria entering and causing infections.

Various treatments are available, however, prognosis is directly related to the timeliness of diagnosis.

Consult your veterinarian if you are interested in diagnosing that one odd cow who has a lump on her jaw. /TK

We are full swing into after-hours calls and want to remind everyone of ETVS After-Hour Protocol:
👀☎️
1️⃣Call the OFFICE to be directed to the on-call veterinarian. (780-356-3887)
The veterinarian will call you back once they receive your message. If you do not leave a message, you will not get a call back.
2️⃣Be prepared. Have your trailer plowed out, truck warmed up, and handling system accessible should you be asked to haul to our clinic.
3️⃣Know your time-line.
➡️How long has the cow or heifer been in labor?
➡️What do you feel? 2 feet? a tongue? a tail?
➡️What do you see? Swollen head? Water bag?
➡️What do you smell? Is it horribly stinky or unnoticeable?
4️⃣Remain calm. If you are calm, the cow/heifer will be more inclined to be calm, which makes everything easier!

Make sure to stock up on calving supplies before your due date! We are well stocked and ready to assist with all your calving and after-hours cattle needs🤠🫡
