Have you ever looked in a piggy's mouth??
We have!!!
Boars have tusks that continue to grow throughout their life. Depending on how old they are, these tusks can begin to pose a risk to fellow pigs or their handlers. By trimming a few centimeters off of the tusk, we can promote better oral health and eliminate any potential risks.
In this video you will see that one tusk was beginning to puncture the top gum line. This would be incredibly painful and begin to cause him to decrease his food intake, leading to other health issues.

Scours is a broad term for diarrhea in a young calf. It can progress very quickly causing severe dehydration, unwillingness to nurse, and lethargy. If symptoms are not noticed quickly, the likelyhood of a calf surviving drastically decreases.
We offer a full service of 24hr hospitalization with intense IV fluids and meditations; always giving the calves we see the best chance at survival!!

🌼 Happy Administrative Professionals Day to our favourite VMA, Jen! 🌼
Jen has been with us for almost 4 years and has been an essential part of our business since she started. With so much of our work done on-farm, we rely on Jen to be the glue at the clinic that keeps us all together. She can often be heard laughing with our clients, or chatting with the CFIA office about exports. She knows where all of our clients are located and remembers when they typically preg test, semen test, or order meds. She greets everyone by name when they walk through our door. Our business has grown so much since she started and her steadfast presence and competence is truly engrained into ETVS. She is gearing up to start her next chapter in life in central Alberta and we are both so grateful to have had her with us for 4 years and sad to see her go.
✨Today we celebrate Jen! ✨

Colostrum is an ESSENTIAL component for happy, healthy calves. Whether birthed naturally or with medical intervention, it is necessity to get them colostrum as soon as possible. This calf was born via c-section and was tubed with colostrum within 5minutes of delivery.

We are extremely impressed with our UltraGrip anti-slip paint we applied to our cattle alleyway! It took a bit of learning but it was WELL worth the cost and the labor!
A big thumbs up from everyone at ETVS!!

While we hope for the best in calvings, rarely we see congenital defects (deformities in newborn animals) that need vet assistance. Most deformities are random genetic mutations, while some can be the result of toxins.
In this case we had a calf with Arthrogryposis (fused joints) and kyphosis/scoliosis (abnormal rounding of the spine). The fused joints would not allow the calf to be born vaginally so a C-section was performed to save the mom.
If you have a calving issue that just doesn't make sense... sometimes it's because they just don't make sense!

UltraGrip no slip floor paint!
We are super excited to be applying this to our alleyway to orevent injury to the cattle who come through! It will also (hopefully) make it a little quieter without them grabbing fir traction as much!!🤞🏼🤞🏼🐮🐮

International Women's Day
👩🏼🦰👩🏼👩🏻🦱👩🏻👩🏻🦰
Women come in many different versions but all for the same purpose; to spread beauty, joy, and, let's be honest, a little bit of sass to the world around us.
Women are a force to be reckoned with and occasionally an emotional rollercoaster to navigate.(apologies to our significant others!)
Here at Emerson Trail Veterinary Services, we are fortunate enough to have 5 brilliantly talented women who are focused on livestock health and the longevity of the agriculture industry.
Thank you to each of these ladies and for the roles filled by your determined spirit!💪 💫
