Quinn had a wonderful weekend playing NASDA…she earned her Urban Locating Level I Excellent title! She even tried Urban Level II and earned a few points towards that title. Plus she also ran Trailing Brace Level I with her daughter Mirabel and is inching closer to that title as well!

Rosie is sharing the glory of her new Novice Sprinter title with her dad. She only needed a few points for this title when the season started because she had earned some last year, but the track and surrounding area had many active ground squirrels and they were just too much for her to resist. She decided hunting was way more fun than chasing “bunnies” on a string. So her dad ran 100m on the outside of the track cheering her on and she managed to get the points she needed for this title.

I am very proud of our little Rosie and the fact that she loves hunting rodents since that’s what she was bred for. But it might mean her Sprinter career is on hold, for now anyway…maybe she will want to chase the lure in the cooler months when there aren’t as many distractions!

Mirabel absolutely rocked her first “big girl” NASDA trial at just 10 months of age earning both her Urban Locating Level I, and her Trailing and Locating Level I titles! She qualified in 10/12 runs over the 3 days and had a fantastic time using her nose to hunt those rats!

✨ 🐾 ✨ PDS Dog of The Month ✨ 🐾 ✨
July 2023

A popular breed whose name translates from its German origins to “Badger Dog”, the Dachshund is a familiar sight to many with its famous long, low silhouette, ever-alert expression and bold, vivacious personality which has made them an icon of purebred dogdom. They come in two sizes (standard and miniature) and three coat types (smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired). Scent hounds that were bred to go to ground after badgers, rabbits, and other vermin they were developed to be independent hunters, they are smart, vigilant, can be brave to the point of rashness and a bit stubborn but their endearing nature and unique look have won million of hearts all over the world. The dog we are excited to feature this month is of the miniature smooth-coat variety and is a true testament to what these little dogs with huge hearts can accomplish.

I Am Mischief Managed Potter VG GME SX2 SDO AGNS CGN RATCHX CZ8P CW-SI CW-ScR3 SVB TL-II UL-II NJC GR-N TN-N IAC … to his friends he is simply Potter an almost 11-year-old veteran of the dog sport scene whose accomplishments are nearly too numerous to count... but we will try!

The first Dachshund to earn a Versatility Gold title, the highest versatility title offered by the Canadian Kennel Club, he has competed in many different sporting venues and has earned 45 titles enroute to his VG title. He was also the first Dachshund to earn a CKC Scent Detection Open title and the CKC Sprinter Excellent 2 title!

Potter has competed in Earthdog, Agility, Barn Hunt, Scent Detection, Sprinters and NASDA.
While Potter has retired from many of his activities in his golden years, you’ll still find him out strutting his stuff at some trials now and again. Still active, he loves to take a therapeutic swim in the heated Prairie Dog Sports pool, hunt rodents at his farm or play fetch in the yard.

He is also a fantastic big brother teaching the ropes to the crew of Chroma Dachshunds. A dog who loves comfort, he enjoys snuggling and burrowing under blankets but if you’ve covered him up incorrectly, he will let you know, he’s said to be quite particular about how his blankets are arranged. Potter loves snacks, veggies are a favourite, in particular crunchy romaine lettuce and brussels sprouts.
Potter is happy to meet people and give kisses to anyone wearing Burt’s Bees lip balm… but only the original kind please.

Please join us in wishing Potter a Happy 11th birthday this month and congratulations on being named Prairie Dog Sports Dog of the Month for July 2023!

We are so proud of Archer…on July 2 he earned his NASDA Urban Locating Level 1 Excellent title! After earning the base title with 100 points, he had to earn an additional 500 points to get this title. Our handsome little man still likes to play this game and loves to hunt for those rats!

Mirabel had a great first time out sniffing at the GSP Club’s Scent Detection trial! At almost 7 months old, she earned her CKC Scent Detection Instinct title (CKC pending), SDIN. She had a new environment with dogs and people to contend with, and then I asked her to work. I’m so proud of her! I can’t wait to see where this game takes us!

Archer also had a fun time at the Mulligan Dog Sports NASDA trial yesterday!

He hasn’t played since October but he qualified in 3/3 Urban Locating Level I runs with two Best of Breed bonuses, a Second Place bonus and a Third Place bonus! He is working towards his Excellent title and is only 66 points away. Archer loves playing Urban Locate, and he was so happy to get back out there! 🥰

Rosie Posie had a great day at the Mulligan Dog Sports NASDA trial.

She qualified in 3/3 of her Urban Locating runs (with one BOB bonus) to earn her Urban Locating Excellent Level I (UL-IX) title! This title is awarded when a dog earns an additional 500 points in that level.

She has had some stellar runs to get to this point in 10 months with limited trialing and has earned multiple Best Of Breed bonuses and even a High In Class! I can’t wait to see where this sport takes her!

Potter Potter Potter. He continues to amaze me with his willingness to play any game I ask him to try, and he will always give me 100%!

Yesterday he earned his NASDA Lost Item Recovery Level I (LI-I) title, which also now earns him the NASDA Supreme Versatility Bronze (SVB) title. This is awarded when the dog earns the same level of titles in the core events of Urban Locating, Trailing and Locating, Shed Dog, Trailing Brace and Lost Item. He is the first Mini Dachshund in Canada to earn this title, and the fifth Mini Dachshund in NASDA overall.

On top of earning these two new titles, he qualified in 3/3 Urban Locating Level 3 runs, with two High In Class bonuses and one Second Place bonus to boot. He is now over halfway to his Urban Locating Level 3 title!

Potter makes me so proud at how far we’ve come in this sport since starting to compete in NASDA in July 2021. He is honest, tells me when he’s struggling, and tries his hardest on every single run. But he’s just as happy to be snuggled up next to me hanging out on the couch. I love him so much. 🥰

2022 was a great year for the Chroma Dachshunds crew. We didn’t get out to as many events as we usually do, but I am thrilled with what they were able to accomplish at the events we chose to attend!

Rosie earned three titles in NASDA…TL-I, UL-I, and SD-I. She has continued to accumulate points in Urban Locating Level I and is close to earning her Urban Locating Level I Excellent title. She is one run away from her Novice Sprinter title so we will get that done this year. She will also start her Scent Detection journey this year and who knows what else we will get up to!
Archer also earned three titles in NASDA…TL-I, UL-I, and SD-I. He has a few points in UL-II and has continued to accumulate points in Urban Locating Level I and is close to earning his Urban Locating Level I Excellent title. I am hoping to rekindle his love for Scent Detection, or maybe we will finally get around to trying tracking!

Quinn had a very busy year finishing her CKC Canadian Championship, earning a C-WAGS Scent Ranger Level 1 title, and her CKC Scent Detection Instinct (SDIN) title. She also passed her CKC Novice Container and Exterior components, so we are hoping to finish her CKC Novice Scent title this year and start training for Open. She earned three titles in NASDA…TL-I, UL-I, and SD-I and has continued to accumulate points in Urban Locating Level I and is close to earning her Urban Locating Level I Excellent title. After the NASDA trial in July she had to take a break from sports so she could bake the 4 little buns in her oven, and she had her first litter at the end of August. She was an amazing mother and enjoyed raising her puppies, but she was thrilled to get back to work at the last NASDA trial for the year on December 31. She went 3/3 in UL-I and earned two HIC placements (but since I was judging another event at that trial the placement went to the next fastest dog). I was amazed at her confidence and enthusiasm during her runs; I guess the break did her good!

Potter was on fire as usual this year and is showing no signs of slowing down at 10.5 years of age. He also managed several “firsts” along with his new titles. He was the first dachshund of any variety in Canada to earn a CKC Scent Detection Open title, a CKC Sprinter Excellent 2 title, and a CKC Versatility Gold title. In July, against my better judgement because I forgot how much running is required in agility, Potter was entered in a NADAC trial and finished off his IAC (Intro Agility) and TN-N (Novice Tunnelers) titles. He also earned several new NASDA titles…SD-I, UL-II, and TL-II, and he has some points on the board in a couple of the games in Level III. He was the first dog of any breed at a trial in Canada to earn a Trailing Brace Level I (TB-I) title which in turn earned him a NASDA Versatile Locating Bronze (VL-B) title! He finished the year with a C-WAGS Scent Ranger 3 title in November and earned some more points in UL-II at the last NASDA trial for the year.

And last but not least...little Mirabel. She has become a lovely addition to our crew and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us!

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped us and cheered us on this year. Whether it was lending us items during Quinn’s pregnancy, advice regarding breeding, whelping, and raising a litter, giving me a shoulder to cry on, helping us at shows and all the other events…I truly appreciate all of my friends, new and old, for their continued support and friendship.
Here’s to 2023…may it be whatever you wish it to be!
