Gorgeous Sky was pretty suspicious of men from the time he arrived at the Mississauga Animal Shelter. We did some good "exposure therapy" work, and he's relaxing much better, and has now found a great home where his new family report he's thriving. They sent this pic to the shelter staff, who shared it with me.

I got to meet a third member of the litter! Astro and Ursa's sister Jupiter, now named Suki, is cautious like her sister, and we're going to be working on helping her cope with ordinary household noises, which are currently a bit much for her delicate nature.

Here's Blue again, looking off into his future after our final session together at the shelter. What a great guy! He's a fast learner, has a head start on some good household manners and has shown solid progress towards walking on a loose leash. I think he's going to be a great pet, yet he has no inquiries on adoption yet.

As promised, Ursa's brother Astro, in a separate foster-family through Mississauga Animal Services. The siblings couldn't be more different in personality! While Ursa is cautious and gentle, Astro is boisterous and playful. The contrast for me is about building the confidence of one and harnessing the energy of the other. Shows you how even the same genetic input and the exact same start in life don't add up to the same characteristics, while some people try to generalize personalities across entire breeds!

Sometimes behaviour work is similar to detective work. You gather some data and start with a hypothesis of what you're dealing with, but you have to be ready to shift theories as more information emerges. Little Foxy here has us on such a scavenger hunt as we figure out what triggers are making her bite. In the absence of those triggers, she's as sweet as this picture makes her look!

Seven-month-old Ursa is one of a litter of pups in foster homes through Animal Services, where I've been called in to help their foster-to-adopt families get off to a better start than they had in their first home. I forgot to take a picture of her brother on my visit to another family, but I'll get you one next week! Not sure if I get to meet all five yet.

Beautiful Blue is still a puppy at about 8 months, but was brought to the shelter in Mississauga by a family who felt they'd bit off more than they could chew. I was originally brought in to help with behaviours the reports suggested were dangerous, but the more we get to know him, the more we think it was probably misunderstood puppy-ness. So we're getting some good foundational training in to help him find a good family.

I meet a few families who are reluctant to use a crate for puppy training, because they are afraid it will be unkind. I took this picture to help illustrate how much most dogs like a small, enclosed space. You might find your dog likes to be under the sofa, like Teddy here, or under a table, or in the turning of the stairs where there are two walls to press against, or even just poking a head under the bed.

Even after several eye surgeries, Stella's face and expression mask her sweet personality. Mostly what she needs to learn, now she's settling in with her new family, is about manners, including un-cuddling on cue.

She's all smiles in her Walking Sweater, but be careful with your feet around Lulu - she has no tolerance for non-pre-approved foot movements. But every dog has some kind of weird quirk, and we can help Lulu with hers!

Lucy has had a rough time finding a home, and has been through a few families in her search for the right match. She's sweet and loving and content with her new family now, and I'm helping her family reduce her over-stimulation when she gets out on a walk.

Binky's person is not Jon Snow, and I hope she won't grow to be as big as Ghost. She is forming a nice bond with her new human akin to the Stark-direwolf connection, though. Now she needs to learn how to be apart for short periods so Dad can go to work and the gym. Baby steps will be a big part of the solution.
