Rest easy, Matthew Perry. You not only brought many laughs, but you brought so much healing to so many homes. Thank you for sharing your heart with us all.

When hedgehogs are life 🤩 Babydude’s wardrobe has many hedgehog-related items, including this adorable set that was gifted to us by a dear, sweet friend. His “baby bear” onesie is separate, and goes with a shirt that I have that says “mama bear”.

Our little family was hit with Covid this past week, including Babydude. Yesterday, I started to feel a tiny bit better and decided to do photos of him and I. I just HAD to dress him up in this set before he outgrew the onesie. It did not disappoint!

I figured I should come back on here and give everyone an update, since its been quite some time since I’ve posted.

Sadly, within the same week coincidentally, Pearl, Ellen and Eleven all gained their spiky angel wings. Pearl and Ellen both developed masses that grew rapidly, and I am unsure of how Eleven passed away in her new home. May they all rest easy. I’m sure Ellen is being as shy as always, Pearl is probably causing so much trouble, and Eleven is probably running circles upon circles upon circles around everyone. Goon is doing amazing in his home, and I was informed that Spud was rehomed again without my knowledge, so I have no idea how he is doing, sadly.

The biggest life update yet, though, is that on December 3, 2021, at 5:05am after having to be induced early due to cholestasis, and 34 hours of labour, our little dude entered the world. He weighed 7lbs, 1oz, and was 19.5 inches long. We have spent the last near two months getting to know this sweet boy and his blossoming personality. He is growing so fast! He is already nearly 11lbs, and almost 24 inches long!! He is smiling, starting to laugh, and loves watching his surroundings. Maggie is absolutely smitten for him. The cats are pretty indifferent to his existence.

He is doing great and we are doing great. We are getting by each day. While I may not own hedgehogs anymore, I will be sure that our little dude knows as much as he can about them. He’s worn many outfits with hedgehogs on them (courtesy of myself and many other people who love him), been swaddled in blankets with hedgehogs on them, has many hedgehog-themed play materials, and several books with hedgehogs in them, including the famous Tales of Miss Tiggy Winkle by Beatrix Potter!

Thank you for reading, and much love to you all!

Boy, I sure do miss this sweet girl. It’s been almost two months since we said goodbye… it’s so weird not being a hedgehog owner anymore after it’s been such a big part of your life for so long… I miss it, but I can’t wait to teach my son all about hedgehogs when he’s older. And maybe, just maybe, someday he will find one he bonds with as much as I bonded with Foxy. Or maybe he will find another animal he loves as much as I love hedgehogs!! Who knows?

October 21, 2021. I got the call and two Facebook messages from various staff at the pet store. When I arrived, she was the first hedgehog of the lot that I was shown. She was semi-wrapped in a towel, with her injured leg exposed. I knew right away that I would eventually be taking this hedgehog home. Over the next two days, I visited her and her siblings almost daily. I had fallen in love with her, but inevitably her mom and sisters as well. We called her “Peg Leg” for the first few days. This derived from the recent(ish) loss of Peg Leg the once-injured crow at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. When we came to terms with amputation being the most possible situation, I decided to name her Fox, after Terry Fox.

Fox came home on November 7, 2017. She had been seen by a vet and we scheduled her amputation. Two days later, she went under and had her injured leg removed. Within three days, she was up and walking normally. Our adventures began.

Foxy Pooh got to go on many adventures. We went to Vancouver Island, Calgary, camping, many hikes, Kananaskis, several hotels, the ocean, mountain summits, the beach (where she chose to SWIM like a CHAMP!), and several ferries!

Fun fact, I met my most recent boss (Lori) at Chapters three years before we worked together, and I had Fox with me that day. She remembered when we started working together, and got me a hedgehog charm for my bracelet when I left 🤍

Fox helped me educate thousands of people. She stole the hearts of so many. She was social, photogenic, and content with life. She loved to dig, sleep on her pouch, and go on adventures. She loved to eat apples, cantaloupe, and Churu treats. She loved to lick my nose, and even tried to as we said our goodbyes. She had the cutest little teefers, and the cutest stump.

Fox is and always will be the best hedgehog I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. She kept me sane in such a crazy time, introduced me to so many people, and really taught me so much. She will leave an ever-lasting paw print on my heart. An Angel on earth and now in Heaven.

So bittersweet 💔 All of these babies (Goon, Spud and Eleven) have gone to their new homes. Ellen and Pearl have also gone to their new home, Connie. Fox is the only hedgehog I have left, and she will be gaining her wings very, very soon. The hardest part about this move has been rehoming the hedgies. They are all far too old to safely make the trip (it’s about an eleven hour drive with all the stops we have to make now). Goon was the only one young enough but our new place does not allow caged animals. They’ve all found lovely homes, and I am confident that the rest of their lives will be filled with love and happiness, and I wish that could be with me, but our careers and the child we are expecting take priority in this instance. This chapter is closing and it’s definitely been difficult. I am so thankful for their new homes. 🤍

*to add, I will still continue to post photos I’ve taken, drawings I make, and will still continue to photograph hedgehogs in our new area. I will not be quitting this page, I promise. I’ve built it up to be a resource for people and I won’t take that away!

⚠️❌ PSA ❌⚠️

“Hedgie hives” does NOT mean you are allergic to hedgehogs. Much like anything that will pierce our skin, it will leave behind an irritation. Given the vast amount of quills that hedgehogs have, this appears in the form of a rash. It is not actually a rash—it is just a bunch of different irritations. With time, your skin will build a tolerance. This could also indicate that your hedgehog requires a bath, and if you’re like me, your skin is sensitive, so it appears worse than it actually is. I’ve seen so many hedgehogs re-homed due to people thinking this minor irritation that typically goes away within an hour is an allergy. If your reaction goes beyond just your typical “hedgie hives”, then of course consider other options, but please, please do not give up on your hogs because of this.
