This is a hard post for me to make, but I have to find Gibby a good LONG TERM home.
I’ve had Gibby for about eight months getting to know him and been low key looking for a home for my little guy in the back ground. I took him on as a very special case to ensure he goes to the correct owners and am in no rush to do this. The hardest part is finding the correct owner as it’s more like I’m playing match maker instead of rehoming a standard animal. The little guy is personality to the max and highly intelligent. I’d have to suggest his intelligence level is that of a five or six year old child.
Gibby is a five year old Caique parrot. These birds are quite rare and are known as the acrobats and comedians of the avian world. I’ll attest to that.. I can almost promise you he’s the most entertaining parrot you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. However, he comes with his own set of problems too just like everyone else does.
Gibby is emotional. Like very emotional haha. If you give him a piece of cheese he will start screaming in excitement, if you ignore him he will follow you around the house and try to snuggle you or get head scratches. If he doesn’t like something, well he makes that very clear too haha. Here’s an example; Gibby LOVES water. If you turn on the sink to do dishes or you’re debating having a shower, he will do his best to be a part of it. Once he’s all wet (this looks ridiculous) you have to put down a towel and allow him to towel himself off. If you try to help him dry off he will get mad and refuse the help. However, watching him dry himself off is the most entertaining thing lol. So emotional and stubborn (typical guy lol).
Gibby isn’t much of a talker but he’s also not annoying or loud like some others can be. He has a beautiful whistle, makes a handful of other funny noises (that I now find myself making), otherwise he’s a very quiet bird; definitely the quietest parrot I’ve met. He would do well in a home with shared accommodations as he really isn’t a vocal parrot in the slightest bit.
Gibby is and always will be the center of anyone’s attention in a home. He will not put up with another bird in the same household and given the opportunity, despite his size, would likely kill another parrot if it seems like competition. Gibby requires a large amount of attention and he thrives for companionship which is the only reason why I’m rehoming him. I just plainly don’t have the time to devote to him. His previous owner was with him 24/7 and they shared a beautiful life. Gibby would go with him a few hours a week to a care home, he’d help with yard maintenance and a few other tasks around the property, then fly back to the owner at the end of their shift and go home together. Otherwise they enjoyed a quiet retired life together and formed an incredible bond in the process.
Gibby lives a semi retired lifestyle and would do best in a home with someone who has a lot of free time or is themselves also retired. He needs twelve hours of sleep in a night or he can be a little grumpykins lol. While Gibby tolerates children I’ve grown to find he doesn’t care for them. He likes them and is good with them but doesn’t seem to want to bond with them; so he tolerates them. We’re looking for a home that doesn’t have kids living in it, but he likes visits from them (just keep them at someone else’s house long term lol). Gibby is very stubborn and requires the new owner to be FIRM. I’ll be honest with you it’s extremely important he has structure, rules, and someone who’s a hard ass. He NEEDS boundaries or he will missbehave and he won’t be a good parrot for you. The calm and quiet approach will not work with this parrot and he will very quickly become alpha in your home if you’re too passive. If presented with guidelines, structure and consequences this is an astonishing companion for someone. I will be extremely stuck on this charter trait, he needs a mature alpha owner.
Caiques are a very social parrot and as a breed they tend not to choose one owner, but have more of a universal outlook with handlers. He can bond to anyone and everyone however he will require the main owner to be firm and structured and this will allow him to behave accordingly in the right environment. With the right structure at home this parrot will be an amazing addition and offer companionship that’s bar none. The bond and friendship he and I have found is incredible. I tickle him while I’ll hold him upside down then we laugh and he snuggles me after. He will climb through my shirt without hurting me and is overall a very silly bird.
Gibby comes ready to go with a cage and all accessories.
Gibby is only five years old with an expected lifespan of about thirty five years. I don’t have the time to invest into a parrot and while I know I make a great temporary home, I’m just that, temporary. I need to find him a long term loving home who will care for him the way I have but able to fulfill this for the rest of his life. Upon adoption, he and I will require a site visit to your home so I can ensure he goes to the proper family. Gibby is an incredible bird to the correct owner but my fear is he lands in the wrong hands and suffers because of this. This is the reason I haven’t taken him to the store or advertised him. If you’re a working professional this isn’t the bird for you. If you’re a parent to young children in the home this isn’t the parrot for you. If you have no experience with birds prior, this isn’t the bird for you. Please please please don’t apply for adoption if you’re not an older person with plenty of time on your hands. Gibby doesn’t deserve to be passed around he deserves a good home and one last owner.
The adoption fee is $2500 for this little man and that’s a good price considering what they normally sell for. He is registered and has his tags. He is hand raised, extremely tame, and a very lovely companion. This WILL break my heart and leave a hole in our family, but I know it’s best for him. If you know of someone who would be a good candidate for Gibby please give them my information and let’s have a chat. You’re welcome to come view him at my home however a follow up visit to your home will also be required once we solidify an agreement.
Thank you for taking the time to read my long winded post. How can you tell this is important to me?
