As the owner of a *very* grumpy horse whose signs had been ignored for many years this resonates very deeply with me. Just because it’s “normal” doesn’t mean there isn’t anything wrong. Please listen to your horse when tacking and mounting especially. They aren’t grumpy for no reason, or just be be a jerk, I promise.

Researcher: Don’t ignore subtle signs of equine discomfort before riding. Often the cause is a veterinary issue.

A fun application for a new patient. He is muscle sore due to increasing work. The purple strips are to relax his Longissimus muscle and stretch the fascia. The yellow strips are to support his lower back. He was also prescribed some basic stretching and a saddle fitting appointment. I will see him again in a couple of weeks.

Study says dressage horses are reasonably comfortable during competition.

Dr. Sue Dyson and her research team evaluated facial expressions and body language of FEI World Cup dressage horses and found that, overall, the animals experience little discomfort while competing.

This is a great technique I was taught in school. I’m glad to see it is getting some more scientific evidence for its efficacy! Most of my patients love it. Do not try it without professional supervision and guidance.

Scientists found that a professional’s light, steady, straight pull at a slightly downward angle relieved pain at several sites along the equine spine.

Made a visit to a lovely mare who has chronic windpuffs which flared up recently with outdoor hill work. After a full body massage, we discussed some hindlimb strengthening exercises and tricks and I applied some to reduce inflammation and swelling, and increase circulation to her lower hind legs.

If your horse exhibits these behaviours, especially on a regular basis, maybe it’s time to call your vet, and then your registered equine massage therapist.

My horse is notorious for finding ways to injure himself. Moving him into a stall for the winter for the first time has me thinking about all these safety things. Does your hose have any of these safety hazards in their stall?

More equi-tape applications for some lovely massage patients. The blue tape is on a horse that had a VERY thought shoulder girdle and I wanted to make sure the excellent releases he showed me didn’t seize up again after I left. The black tape is a new application for a long-time regular. It never hurts to try something new.
