WHERE TO FIND A PET CARE PROFESSIONAL – I am often asked to refer to pet care professionals outside of my geographic area. I always suggest those asking for the referral look for a member of the Pet Professional Guild. This is why.

The Pet Professional Guild Guiding Principles

Section One: The Non-Negotiables

To be in any way affiliated with the Pet Professional Guild all members must adhere to a strict code of conduct.

Pet Professional Guild members understand Force-Free to mean that:
No shock, No prong, No choke and No Pain, No fear, No Force are ever employed in the training, behavior modification, care, or management of any pet.

Definition of Force

Any definition can never be so expansive and explicit that every possible situation is addressed. This is universal in its application. A good example is the US legal system where, very often, courts cannot agree on a single interpretation of what terms and definitions mean – including physical force.

Recognizing this, in the context of its Guiding Principles and as a general framework, the Pet Professional Guild defines physical force as “any intentional physical act against a pet that causes psychological or physical pain, harm or damage to the pet.”

Equipment

Certain equipment is covered above in the Non-Negotiables. Clearly the use of many (or even most) harnesses, head halters, collars (non-choking) and leashes would not be considered physical force under this guiding definition if 1) they are used consistently with our Guiding Principles, 2) they are used as intended and designed, and 3) they are not used in a way that is contrary to their design and intent, i.e. not used in a manner which would cause psychological or physical pain, harm or damage.

Had a training eureka moment this evening working with a super wound up high drive Shepherd mix. Dog definitely has had punishment used in the past he will hold a heal no problem. Except he is exploding inside when he does. Does he hold the heal because he understands it ? No. He hold it because he knew that if he didn't he would be punished. After a week of sessions and almost complete frustration on my part. He couldn't even make eye contact with me. Even tho he would walk beside me, it was squeak, bark bounce excitement and overstimulation the whole way.

So what helped me get through to him?
Calmness, patience and something that has helped me read dog body language when on the move. I will share it with you! T.E.M.P (Thank you Susan Garrett) I check the dogs T.E.M.P and my Temp. Am I frustrated? Am I flustered? Do I need to take a breather? Next, the dog Tail. Eyes/Ears Mouth. Posture. Is your dog overstimulated? Reactive? Maybe this podcast can be the missing piece to YOUR puzzle

This episode could save your dog's life. It could save a child. It could prevent someone from getting a serious injury from a dog. A dog has many ways to c...

Hi, I am Jean Donaldson of The Academy for Dog Trainers! I’m a cross-over trainer, which means I used to train using pain and intimidation but found out there was a way to train without that stuff and never looked back. It works *so* well.

The Academy is on Facebook and Instagram at https://www.facebook.com/AcademyforDogTrainers and https://www.instagram.com/academy4dogtrainers/.

I would like to give a shout out to my colleagues on The Academy staff, Kristi Benson, Kelly Duggan, Casey McGee, Sarah Pennington and Claudine Prud'homme. I have worked with some amazing people but this crew is so smart, compassionate and talented it’s off the charts.

My dog Brian is pretty much the center of the universe. Can you even handle the cute here?

My favorite dog training tip is to gladly and gleefully use plenty of food. This is spectacularly unpacked in Zazie Todd’s blog post here: https://www.companionanimalpsychology.com/2017/04/the-ultimate-dog-training-tip.html

It's so important when hiring a dog trainer to ask questions. Make sure that both you and your dog will be treated with kindness in a learning environment free of fear, pain & intimidation.

MPs passed the bill banning the sale and use of electric collars or chokers for pets. If the ban is approved by the Sénat, France will join other European countries that have legislated in this area.

Rest in Paridise to my Idol Dog Kiko

💔 Goodbye dear Kiko. Say hello to Splash, Dream, Trisch and Jessie for me in heaven. Jessie my Beagle took me from childhood into my 20s and you dear Kiko took over to get me from my 20s to my 40s. The worst thing about dogs is they usually do not live as long as us. But this is also a blessing as we can be there for them and protect and care for them until the very end. My job as Kiko’s protector is over.

17 years ago I brought home a tiny little puppy who was set to be euthanized from the humane society where I worked, sick with distemper, giardia, worms and kennel cough. She fought hard to survive and then became a one in a life time dog. She changed my life and the lives of so many as she was the inspiration behind my YouTube channel Kikopup that I originally created to just document her training but instead turned into an educational channel to teach about compassionate dog training. Goodbye sweet Kiko. 💔

Hello all my amazing pawsome followers. Im reaching out for help from anyone who can. I know right now its been financially straining for everyone so yes its asking alot. As some of you are aware I not only train dogs but own and breed english bulldogs. Some of you have seen pictures or even met our Merle Girl Cali that we added to our bully family. Right now as we speak one of her littermates in California is in serious trouble. He has a very bad obstruction and the surgery is going to cost almost $9000 for the specialist there to do it (and thats in USD) the family has already paid close to 4000 in vet bills since her got sick, they do have insurance but that only covers a small bit of the sum. Im asking that if at all possible you can make even the MINIMUM donation to help Cali"s Brother "Ace" survive, if you cant afford it we will take any and all doggy prayers/ wellness vibe donations too!!!! our extended bully family would be forever greatful!!! I will link the go fund me in the description. If you have any questions please feel to ask. It means alot to me and all of my extended bully family, that you guys even took the time to read this.

Love it!

Using a method described as Progressive Reinforcement training, which is defined as a method where ONLY positive methods are used in pair with reinforcement (No not just treats, this can be anything a dog finds motivating, Toys, praise, environment, attention) My methods are founded by science and ruled by ethics. I dont use adversives because I can train without them, so my choice is to not use them if the behavior can be trained reliably in other way, Believe me it can!

The trick is to always set the dog up to succeed in controlled trainin scenarios , this way there are no needs for punishment or corrections because the dog doesn't have the chance to make the mistake that needs the correction in the first place.

Training with Me is as simple as 5 letters P.I.T.A.R

PREVENT unwanted behaviors from happening as much as you possibly can

INTERRUPT unwanted behaviors in a POSITIVE MANNER if your not able to prevent them or, make a mistake and let them happen.

TRAIN- AND- REINFORCE
THe behavior you want your dog to do instead, by setting up training sessions your dog can continuously succeed in, slowly raising criteria and then practice in real world situations .

THIS is how we train at Give the Dog a Bone. Meanwhile we do 2 other things, we educate the owner and repair the bond between dog and human to make training enjoyable for both parties, so they will WANT to keep learning and building TOGETHER

I have had a few people ask for some clips of me walking a dog that pulled, on a harness with no training collar. This is Hank. My English bulldog Oakleighs littermate. Hes here visiting for some behavior modification, The first time I even tried to walk Hank he wanted to pull my arm and take it with him. I decided we needed to practice inside first as any distraction, and He was gone lol. Anyway. After practice every day. First indoors, then in the yard, and finally in a low activity area, here is hank. Walking on a harness, (no prong/ecollar/choke chain/ slip lead.....no pulling, :)
