Pay attention to whether there are signs of stress or intimidation during mealtime. The problem could be that your cats aren't comfortable eating so close together. In many cases, just a little separation is all that's needed but in other situations, you may have to set up a feeding area in another room.

Do you know the early signs of resource guarding? Here are few signs. Watch for stiff body language, growling, or even side-eye glances when your dog has or is near something valuable. Recognizing these signs early can help you prevent escalation. As a certified dog behaviour consultant, and I’ll guide you through how to manage this in a positive, safe way.

Shutting down behaviours through aversive methods such as loud noises (shakers, rattles, clapping, shouting), air sprays or water sprays, shock collars or physical punishment may certainly suppress behaviour in the short term, which can be very reinforcing for caregivers.🐾🐈🐕

However, what we MUST consider is what effects this may have in the long term.🌟🐾

Animals will learn that they can no longer use certain behaviours to communicate, relieve stress or show their emotional state.🐶😿

This in turn may lead to learned helplessness, reduced welfare and quality of life, or in some instances to physical disease such as Feline Idiopathic Cystitis.💔

So, before choosing the easier option of shutting down behaviour, please consider what this may do to your pet in the long run…🌟🐕🐈

🌞 A Day in the Life of a Certified Behaviour Consultant & Business Owner

Owning and running Walkabout Canine Consulting is always rewarding, sometimes challenging, and never dull! My day often starts early, with coffee in hand, as I review client notes, prepare for sessions, and plan out the day’s work. 📝 This might include consulting sessions, where I help clients address specific behaviour concerns, to hands-on dog training. Today, I might be working on a new approach for a reactive dog or supporting an anxious pup in developing calmness and confidence.

Between client sessions, I focus on growing my business—whether it’s updating content, networking, learning new techniques, or brainstorming ways to better serve my clients. 🌱 📈 As a certified behaviour consultant, ongoing education is essential, so I make time for professional development each week. This could be researching new training methods, collaborating with other trainers, reviewing recent studies to bring the best, evidence-based approaches to my clients or attending webinars to accrue continuing education units.

Balancing business growth with hands-on work, my dogs Liam and Emma often remind me to take a break (usually a beach walk!) to recharge. By the end of the day, I feel fulfilled knowing that I’ve helped dogs and their guardians strengthen their bond. 🐾

The favourite part of running my business is of course connecting with dog guardians and their dogs.

Wise words to remember.

Every day with a reactive dog is a journey, and some days are tougher than others. 🌤️ Remember, whether one hard day, two steps backwards, three moments of doubt, nothing erases all the steps you and your pup have taken together. 🐾 Keep celebrating those wins and trust the process—you’re both growing with every challenge. 💪💕 You are climbing ever higher, and you're not alone in this journey! 🌈✨

Interactive playtime should be fun and rewarding. Be careful that you don't create frustration by keeping the toy out of reach and never letting your cat enjoy successful captures. Playtime is not just about physical exercise -- it's also for mental stimulation, stress relief, and confidence building.

In addition to giving your cat plenty of successful captures throughout an interactive play session, finish the game with one final grand capture. This makes the session very rewarding and satisfying for the cat.
