We had a cystotomy last week.
One of our sweet little patients came to see us last week because the owner noticed she was frequently asking to go outside but only producing a small amount of urine. After running a urinalysis, we decided it would be best to take an X-ray so we could see if we could find anything. Lo and behold she had stones.

The patient spent a week on antibiotics to help calm the bladder down before we moved ahead with surgery.
During the surgery we removed 2 large stones and 5 smaller stones.
There are lots of different types of stones that can develop in the bladder. Two of the most common types of stones are Struvite and Calcium Oxalate. Other stones that may develop are Urate, Cystine and Silica.
It is very likely that this patients stones are a combination of different stones. They will clump together and form these stones.

After surgery, our girl had her first big p*e in a long while.
She is happy and feeling a lot better.
To prevent these stones from forming again she will need to stay on a urinary specific diet for the remainder of her life.
