The Jersey Girls Discarded and destined for slaughter, these beautiful Belgians are getting a second chance. Welcome to Seaweed and Sod Farm on beautiful Cape Breton!

Meet Buttercup and Daisy. An auction barn in Cranbury, New Jersey gives discarded horses one last chance before they are shipped to slaughter. We were lucky enough to be able to rescue two beautiful Belgian Draft mares - Buttercup and Daisy. They have been nicknames "The Jersey Girls". Thank you for following their journey!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you that took an interest in the Jersey Girls journey. Your support and encouragement over the past (almost) three years has been wonderful. The Jersey Girls now run free and unafraid. I thank them for letting me be part of their journey. We took a chance on each other and, although I cannot speak for them, I for one have no regrets.
Run free and wild Buttercup and Daisy. You will live on in my heart and your hooves will beat with the thunder!

It's time. In a little while my dear Buttercup will once again run free. Next time I hear the thunder I'm sure it will be the sound of my Jersey Girls. RIP

Yes, she's still here! She's a tough ol' girl. You might think I saved her, but she saved me. And, she's still teaching me stuff. I know when she's ready she will tell me.

The Orginal Jersey Girl and owner of my heart.

Watching her struggle to walk I think it might be time to make the tough decision :-(

"If those She-Devils get to play in the hayfield then I want in there too!"

06/07/2012

I think yesterday was hard on her. She's off her feed today. :-(

So, after much coordination and delay I got Dave, the farrier and the vet together and they went to town on Buttercup's feet. I don't know about her, but I'm exhausted. Poor girl. She hasn't gotten back up yet but she sits up and eats some grass before she flops down again. Silly girl.

I don't know how she does it with those feet but ... it was a gallop! :-)

10/05/2012

She was trotting!!! And it was BEAUTIFUL!!!!

08/05/2012

Had the vet and farrier out ... I didn't watch her go down but I've been watching her stagger around. Poor Buttercup. I hate her feet. It breaks my heart but she still seems happy so we will persevere. We'll play this game again in June.

1 Broken stall latch + 1 Houdini horse = 2 drafts meeting w/o barriers for the first time. Tiny barn, 2 drafts, one women ... interesting. A bit of a scuffle, Beauty kicked outside w/o her halter and Buttercup looking totally innocent. All before coffee!

I don't know how she does it with those poor feet but she navigates the rocky terrain between the barnyard and the back pasture. At the rocks will help keep her back feet trimmed. Good to see you outside Buttercup!

Sometimes I wish I was a horse. Buttercup is stretched out in the sun enjoying the early spring day.

10/03/2012

It looks like Lady and Buttercup have become friends so perhaps the first one I saddle will be Beauty (oh dear, she is the large one!). I'm not sure what Buttercup is going to do when I send the team off for some under saddle training.

I knew she was a bit of klutz. I'm surprized I don't have a Lady-size hoof print on my foot. Fortunately she didn't linger long.

Six trips to the manure pile, 4 out of 6 front feet lifted, 2 1/2 horses groomed. Now to go back out and do the evening chores. Good afternoon in the barn
