PACK WALK WAS GREAT!
Paw Control Dog Training hosted its first trainer-led Pack Walk, held in Cookstown on the Trans Canada Trail. We had 5 dogs sign up, small to large, puppy to adult, each bringing their own brand of magic.
Most Obedient: Scarlett – an Australian Sheppard, a working breed, so that is a bit of an advantage. She was calm, cool and collected.
Most Adventurous: Caicos - at 5 months, she was the youngest, but you wouldn’t know it from her frequent attempts to lead her handler into farm fields.
Most Enthusiastic: Dublin – a Rhodesian Ridgeback who was super excited about pretty much everything. Combination sighthound and scenthound, what’s not to be excited about?
Most Determined: Wilbur – this English Bulldog not only finished the walk, he set the pace, walking out in front of the others. His owners helped him out with a stop at the creek to cool off.
We even had one little guy that practiced resisting the urge to chase bicycles, letting many go by unmolested.
Pack walks are a great way to exercise your dog, as well as practice obedience and loose-leash walking. They are also good socialization opportunities, for both canines and humans.
Each dog that participates is known to the trainer, maximizing the probability of positive interactions. Pack walks are by invitation only, which are issued to present and past Paw Control Dog Training clients, as well as our Volunteer Squad. For more information, please see our website at pawcontrol.dog or call 705-890-0376.
Preparations are underway for our next socialization event, a Backyard Get Together.

Thought you should know Ravi’s walks have improved significantly since the training session on Wednesday. You clearly know your stuff. It is amazing how just an hour with you has made such a difference. It’s like he is a new fluffy man!! We do practice what you taught us and Ravi responds really well. Excited for the next session.

Introducing our Volunteer Squad

Here are the dogs and people that are available to meet with Paw Control clients for socialization and training purposes. As a thank you for their invaluable service they will be invited to join future organized Paw Control events such as pack walks and backyard get togethers. Should you wish to get involved or just have questions, please call 705-890-0376 for more information.

DOGS
Wilbur – English Bulldog – 11 months old
He is super friendly with people and dogs, but because he is exuberant he needs to be paired with tolerant dogs. Like all English Bulldogs Wilbur snorts a lot and is very verbal; a useful training opportunity.

Scarlett – Australian Sheppard – 8 years old
She is one of those priceless personalities that adapt to fit the situation; energetic with active dogs and calm with sedate dogs. She can be hesitant with strangers but warms up quickly.

PEOPLE
Melissa is Wilbur’s owner. She is willing to meet client dogs with or without Wilbur but her main goal is to socialize her dog. I’m looking forward to Melissa and Wilbur joining us on a pack walk.

Brenda is Scarlett’s owner. She and her adult daughter Sarah are willing to meet all kinds of dogs, including those being rehabilitated from past behavioural issues. Yeah!

Heidi and her husband Eben also bring another valuable resource to the Volunteer Squad; young kids. And their 2 sons, 8 and 10, are not being dragged into this kicking and screaming. They want to be involved. In fact, they asked to be involved.

PAW CONTROL DOG TRAINING IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
In the Cookstown, Alliston, Innisfil, Bradford, Barrie area
Calling all dog lovers!! The hardest part of socializing dogs is finding people who are willing to do it with you, especially when it involves a dog who is an unknown or who is being rehabilitated after past aggressive behaviour. So, being new in town, I am looking to develop a roster of volunteers, with or without dogs, that would be willing to meet up with clients and their dogs in public places to allow for interaction between both people and dogs. If you are struggling to give your dog the variety of experiences he needs for good socialization, this could be the answer. You can decide if you want your dog to only meet friendly dogs, or if you want to be one of the people that changes the life of a dog with behavioural challenges. A trainer will be present at all meet-and-greets. All types of dogs and people are welcome; the only restrictions are that humans be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by an adult, and that dogs be at least 16 weeks old and have all appropriate shots for their age. As a thank you for your time and generosity, you will be invited to participate in Paw Control`s future scheduled socialization events, such as pack walks and backyard get togethers. Caveat: during the pandemic provincial laws may limit the number of participants in these events and preference will be given to Paw Control clients, first current then to past clients. Participation is open to any volunteers, including children, with or without dogs. A short vetting process will take place to determine how best to use your services and the services of your dog. If you are interested in getting involved, or have questions, please email me at [email protected] or call or text at 705-890-0376.
