Applecross Veterinary Hospital Promoting animal health through preventive and modern veterinary medicine. We are constantly working to to give your pet the best possible care.

At Applecross Veterinary Hospital we believe in promoting animal health through preventive and modern veterinary medicine. We are a full service veterinary hospital, some of our services include:

Wellness Plans
A Wellness Plan is a group of preventive medicine products and services offered to our clients at a discounted rate and billed monthly. This falls under our belief that preventive medicine

will help prevent future disease, or allow for earlier treatment of existing or developing disease. For example: annual blood work, dental cleanings, etc. Dental Suite

Your pet’s teeth are an integral part of his or her overall health. Teeth require yearly cleaning, and this cleaning can greatly increase the life span and quality of life of your pet. Unlike us, pets are not happy to open their mouths for a cleaning and require a full anaesthesia in order to have their teeth properly cleaned and examined. We will scale the teeth to remove tartar and plaque build-up and polish them to smooth the enamel. This is done to remove small wear marks which can encourage the development of plaque and tartar. Onsite Laboratory

We are proud to offer many on site laboratory services. This allows our doctors to quickly assess diagnostics to help better form a treatment plan for our sick patients. We are also able to offer lab services for our elderly patients who come in for their yearly vaccinations. Routine testing for blood counts and chemistries are done with state-of-the art equipment in the hospital and are available within hours. Among the laboratory services offered:
◦Feline leukemia & FIV testing
◦Fecal floatation
◦Urinalysis and microscopic examination of urine
◦Complete blood counts
◦Blood chemistry and electrolytes
◦Cytology (microscopic examination of cells) of the skin and ears
◦Culture and sensitivity
◦Diabetes diagnosis and control
◦Hormone levels, such as thyroid, cortisol, and progesterone
◦Histology (microscopic examination of tumor cells)
◦Testing for parasites such as giardia

Please ask our staff about our geriatric panels, pre-aesthetic panels, and paediatric panels. We use several out of the clinic laboratories for services that we can not offer in order to provide the best care possible. These other test results are usually available within 24 hours. Personalized Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important component of your pet’s wellness and will help prevent serious illnesses from developing. After a consultation with you on your pets life style and a thorough an examination of your pet our veterinarians will determine an appropriate vaccines protocol. If you are traveling with your pet, please ensure that we are aware of where you are traveling to so that we can ensure your pet is covered for any diseases they may encounter at your travel destination. Radiology

Our on-site X-ray equipment is helpful for examining masses, tumors, and potential obstructions, detecting cat or dog arthritis, and can discover hidden problems that may warrant further investigation. Surgery

Our special combination of technology and know-how ensures that the animals we care for undergo only the safest and most effective surgery we can provide. With this in mind, we begin every surgery consultation with a thorough physical exam—including blood work—to determine whether your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia and to undergo surgery at the outset. From here, we will administer any necessary pre-surgerical medications and will continue to monitor and care for your animal’s condition post-operatively as needed. After Hours Service

Emergencies

Emergencies never happen when you expect them, and they never seem to happen during the doctor’s office hours. 24 hour emergency service is provided through the small animal emergency clinic at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital (250) 933-0913.

Today is Bring your Cat to work day. Would your cat enjoy a day at work with you? Have you ever brought them to work? If so, how did that go? Some cats are home bodies while others are bold and explorative. Those brave pawed souls deserve to see where their humans go for so many hours of the day. If you are going to bring your kitty to work be sure to bring some cats toys from home and a kitty bed as well so they have familiar smells to help them get acclimated when they get to the office. Fun Fact— in an episode of “The Office” it is revealed that Angela Kinsey keeps her cat named Bandit in the bottom drawer of her filing cabinet. Enjoy this special day with you cat at work. We would love to see a picture.

Today is World Pet Memorial Day. I’d like to leave this poem here by Linda Barnes. It sums up all the feelings we go through when grieving our pets in such a beautiful way.

They will not go quietly, the pets who’ve shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.
Old habits make us think we hear them at the door. Or step back when we drop a tasty morel on the floor. Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be. And sometimes coming home at night we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends and a new dish to fill that one place in our hearts belongs to them and always will.

Yesterday was International Chihuahua Appreciation Day. This day of appreciation started on May 14, 2020 when former Miss British Columbia Nadia Alterio announced on her blog that today, May 14, 2020 will henceforth be known as International Chihuahua Appreciation day. This day did coincide with her own chihuahua Teaka’s birthday. The breed Chihuahua was named after the Mexican State of Chihuahua. Five Fascinating Facts about Chihuahua’s. 1. They have a very loving disposition. Once you are loved by them. You are always loved by them. 2. They have a mistrust of strangers. Chihuahua’s tend to be mistrustful of strangers and are constantly alert of any danger. 3. Quick learners. They would do great in dog sports. 4. Not cold friendly. They do not fair well in cold weather. 5. Commonly mispronounced. The word “chihuahua” is commonly mispronounced. Its actual pronunciation is closer to “shee-wa-wa”! Do you have a chihuahua in your life. If so, is there something you’d like to share about them?

Happy National Cat Lady Day! A day to celebrate women who love cats! It is meant to recognize the meaningful relationships that exist between felines and their human caretakers and to break down stereotypes associated with women who love cats. Cats improve your mental health and are stress relievers by simply being themselves. What is not to love about cats?

National Siamese Cat Day is April 6th. Siamese cats are considered royal pets. They were treasured by Kings and Nobles and were often seen in palaces. Siamese are socialable, playful and entertaining. They have such an intelligent nature that they can even be trained to walk on a leash and do tricks. Their paint colouring is temperature dependent. The darker points on a Siamese cat such as their ears, face, paws and tails are produced by a temperature sensitive enzyme. This explains why parts that are darker are likely cooler and have darker fur. Do you have a Siamese cat? If so, what is something unique about them that you can share?

Today we celebrate K9 Veterans Day!

Famous War Dogs- Sgt. Stubby the Boston Terrier, who was able to detect incoming artillery, mustard gas and even enemies. Stubby once latched onto a German infiltrator that was dressed as an American Soldier in the middle of the night earning him an Iron Cross.
Gander, the Canadian Newfoundlander lab that saved his unit by catching and running away with a hand gr***de while stationed in Hong Kong during World War II. Gander literally gave his life for his crew.
It is so important that we recognize these and all the other brave K9’s that help in so many ways.
