Tapeworm Segment in a canine fecal sample.
It's a gross one again! Sorry, but some people love it! This is a very fresh canine fecal sample (poop) in a zip lock bag with a tapeworm segment quickly getting off the fecal sample to get into the environment to either be ingested in whole or to release the thousands of eggs that are inside the segment. In this dog’s case, the tapeworm infection was likely caused by a flea infestation, and the dog ingested the infected fleas while grooming himself. However the dried rice like segments are easily ingested by other animals grooming or through nose to bum contact etc. Tape worm eggs are not a common find on the fecal centrifuged flotation even in affected pets, as the eggs escape the pet in the enclosed segment or packet that comes off the adult worm in the intestine and makes its way out in the bowel movement. Note that you can hear the centrifuge running in the background of the video to check for other parasites. (Note no eggs were found in the fecal today even though there was a parasite present!)
Happy pups 24 hours post rescue!
Happy pups doing what pups do before they went to the Arnprior Humane Society for more care and adoption. Note all were adopted! Ellen was so patient with them, but glad to see them go!

Video roundworm eggs in fecal sample.
Ok, so I posted the gross ear mites already today! Here is a new one...this is a fecal sample from a young dog. Aside from fecal material and undigested plant matter...oh my there is an abundance of roundworm eggs! This is under the microscope at 10X (100 optic) We only took about 5 grams of stool in a special fecal centrifucation and floatation of the sample in solution. They are parasites... they happen...we are glad to look at fecals and help treat them!
Ear mites under the microscope...ewwww!
Video - A sample was taken from a moderately waxy/dirty ear in a young adult cat today and we found some swimmers in the mineral oil applied to the sample under the microscope at 4X (40 optic)...earmites! The first part is a male and female (x - rated) later in the video you can see another mite near a mite egg and a few others swimming around. This cute little cat went home with some medication to take care of the mites for sure, and any intestinal worms, fleas and heartworms if they are there as well. We joke after seeing it that we all have itchy ears!
Pot-bellied pig surgery...."Coconut"
You may have remembered "Coconut" from our Monday Morning post yesterday....."Coconut" underwent castration surgery yesterday using a slightly different anesthetic protocol than what we use typically on our dog and cat patients. Dr Caven has been doing spay and castration surgeries on pet pigs for a number of years now.
This is "Coconut" last night ...back to his normal, adorable self....learning some new tricks! (Pot bellied pigs are very intelligent animals and make great pets!) Coconut is a "house-piggy" and uses a litter box just like a cat would. He loves cuddles and is VERY food motivated! :) <3
