On September 11, 2001, when the towers fell and the world was covered in smoke and silence, heroes of every kind stepped forward. Firefighters, police officers, medics, and volunteers ran toward the devastation with no thought of themselves—only of who they might save.

And alongside them, when the world stood still and the skyline crumbled, more than 300 search and rescue dogs charged into chaos. They didn’t pause. They didn’t fear. They moved through smoke and twisted steel, over broken glass and endless rubble, driven only by the need to find life where hope was fading.

They went in with nothing but courage—no protection, no promise of safety—just loyalty and instinct. They worked until their paws bled, until the dust choked their lungs, until exhaustion overtook their handlers. Yet still, they pressed forward. Because that’s the nature of true heroes.

When the search was over, another kind of hero arrived. Therapy dogs. Gentle. Grounded. Steadfast. They asked for nothing. They simply lay down beside the grieving, rested their heads in tired laps, and reminded shattered hearts that love was still alive.

These dogs did more than serve—they carried our collective grief, absorbed our silence, and offered comfort words could never reach. At Ground Zero, they were hope on four legs, quiet guardians who will never be forgotten.

We don’t just honor them. We thank them. For their sacrifice. For their compassion. For teaching us that devotion knows no limits.

To the dogs of 9/11: your bravery and love remain etched in history, a legacy that continues every time a rescue dog answers the call.

We will always remember.

Meet Crissy, one of our incredible fosters and foster coordinators. Since joining us in early August, she’s jumped in without hesitation—supporting events, running supplies, and giving her full heart to the dogs in her care. Crissy is not only thorough and dependable, but also a clear and thoughtful communicator who keeps us all in the loop with regular photo updates. Her dedication and love for these animals shines through in everything she does. We’re so grateful to have her on the team!
