During WW1 a French bulldog named ‘Mutt' worked for the YMCA Cigarette Dog delivery service. He was a "trench runner” Frenchie that delivered ci******es and gave his friendship to the soldiers. Dogs provided psychological comfort, even if for just a moment.
He was wounded twice and spent most of WW1 boosting moral of the 11th Engineers, shown here carrying cartons of ci******es for the troops.
With the wars end the mascots were usually left behind but Mutt was fortunately smuggled on board.
When he was discovered and under threat of being thrown overboard his saviour said they'd have to throw him overboard also.
Mutt returned safely to New York. 🌺

For those of you who knew Kari:

**Memorial Update: We will be holiding an informal memorial and celebration of life for Kari's Vancouver Island & PAWS friends and family:
Sunday Nov. 18th at 2:30 pm at the North Oyster Community Hall on Cedar Rd. (across from the North Oyster primary school). Upstairs room (201).

You are welcome to come an share stories, see her needle points and add to the condolence book to send to her family.

We are extremely sad to report that Kari died peacefully in her sleep Oct 23, 2018.
Kari was a dedicated dog lover, skilled animal health technologist, and canine rehabilitation specialist, and cross-stitcher extrodinaire.
She will be greatly missed as a friend, as member of our PAWS team, and by the many dogs and people she has worked with.

A memorial service will be organised in due course, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nourish Cowichan www.nourishcowichan.ca
