Dogs & fireworks 🎆

You may enjoy the celebrations that are coming, but many dogs do not.

DO NOT bring your dog to celebrate the fireworks. Many dogs panic and become lost &/or injured when fireworks go off. Dogs have even jumped off apartment balconies and fallen to their death. Let’s prevent this!

• Create a safe haven in your home
Fill your dog's favorite space with comfortable blankets and bedding to help them feel safe and secure. Make your dog’s space comfortable by including their favorite toys or other distractions.

• Prevent escapes
Keep your dog indoors, in a secure area where your dog won't get loose and run away if scared. Choose a quiet, internal room where you dog won't get loose and run away if scared. Ensure all gates and fences are secure. Check that your dog's identification is up-to-date (e.g., name tag, microchip) so you can be quickly reunited if your dog escapes.

• Keep the “big bang” away
Keep your dog safely inside during fireworks and thunderstorms. Close all curtains, windows and doors. Turn on the TV or radio to help mask the sound. Provide toys and distractions.

• Be a friend
Try not to leave your dog alone during loud noises
Don't punish your dog if they act out – this will only make your dog more distressed.

Stay safe and enjoy your long weekend! ❤️🐾

Solar eclipse 2024.
Things I did notice as I went to quiet location, as darkness began, the birds went crazy. Loud chirping and disoriented. In my own home, my dogs and my cat were extremely tired tonight. It was strange. Lots of deep sleeping at times they are usually active. For myself , who is energy sensitive, tired also I feel a sense of calm and yet it feels eerie.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

About Us

I moved to Canada from the UK in the early 1990's. My original plan was to stay for a year working as a nanny but life had other plans,. I fell in love with Canada and later my husband and Canada became my home. Together we have 3 beautiful daughters and 2 adorable dogs whom we adopted. As well as our dogs we have adopted cats, guinea pigs and even hamsters. Animals have always and always will be a big part of my life.

Having family that all still live in the UK can be complicated at the best of times but when we plan a visit home it becomes nightmarish to say the least. What can we do with our pets? who will look after our home? Making the arrangements is exhausting and we have often thought how nice it would be to have someone reliable to call who would take care of it all for us. And that is where I discovered how many more people are in the same predicament. From there grew the idea for Paws and Palaces. We come to you, take care of your pets and home. Do whatever chores you need done and provide a loving and safe experience for your pets. Or the alternate option your pet comes to us, whatever best suits your needs. We also provide drop in services and dog walking. We are here to suit your needs. Shift workers who need evening visits or want your pet to be looked after overnight our hours are 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
