SECRETARIAT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION MARCH 27-29 AT THE MEADOW EVENT PARK FEATURING TRIPLE CROWN TRIO – CHARLIE DAVIS, BILL NACK AND KATE TWEEDY
Secretariat’s exercise rider, his biographer and the Chenery family historian will all be celebrating Big Red’s birthday at his birthplace, The Meadow, March 27-29. Charlie Davis, who galloped “Big Red” for his workouts; acclaimed author Bill Nack, whose book Secretariat – The Making of a Champion served as inspiration for Disney’s major motion film Secretariat; and Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery and co-author of Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend will be greeting fans throughout the weekend. The birthday event is part of the new Virginia Horse Festival at Meadow Event Park.
Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte was slated to attend but was injured in a vehicle accident on March 9. Plans are in motion to provide ways that fans can send their well wishes to Turcotte during the birthday event.
One of the major highlights of the celebration will be the VIP Reception and Secretariat Storytelling Program on March 28. This will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. in Meadow Hall with guests of honor Davis, Nack and Tweedy. After the reception, Nack will share an intimate perspective on Secretariat, providing his favorite stories and personal recollections. His compelling presentation features video footage from Secretariat’s Triple Crown races, to be followed by a question-and-answer session with him, Turcotte, Davis and Tweedy. Tickets are $100 and must be purchased by March 22. Seating is limited. The price also includes one-day admission to the Virginia Horse Festival.
Another new feature this year will be VIP tram tours of the farm. The tours offer the unique experience of hearing stories from Secretariat team members while seeing the historic barns and grounds. VIP tram tour tickets are $25 and will be available on site each day at the Narrated Tour Station, first-come, first-serve. Basic tram tours are also available for $5.
Fans will also be able to meet the Secretariat team in the exhibit hall where they will be signing autographs at various times at the Secretariat booth. Rare Meadow Stable memorabilia will be on display and exclusive Secretariat merchandise will also be available for purchase.
On Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m., Secretariat team members will go to the show ring for the Meadow Descendants Gathering to greet Thoroughbreds who have Secretariat or other Meadow Stable champions in their lineage. This “family reunion” will showcase not only the famous bloodlines, but also retired racehorses that have found new homes and new careers off the track. Here is the fact sheet and entry form for the Meadow Descendants Gathering.
