We always knew horses could talk....ours have no trouble asking for treats :)

New research has revealed that horses do, in fact, try to intentionally communicate with us to achieve certain goals.

We are sad for the loss. We are angry these losses continue. It is time for change.

FROM A PARENT:
One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to do horse riding?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my kids horse riding. Personally, I couldn't care less about horse riding.

So, if I am not paying for horse riding, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go the stables but go anyway.

- I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body.

- I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates.

- I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that score they'd hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading.

- I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

- I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships.

- I pay so that my kids can be in the arena instead of in front of a screen...
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for horse riding, I pay for the opportunities that horse riding provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!

Happy Birthday :D

Happy Birthday Secretariat !!

The legendary Secretariat was born March 30, 1970, at The Meadow in Doswell, VA, 45 years ago today. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.

Here is a video documentary of his time at Woodbine and momentous last race on October 28, 1973, the Canadian International. His ghostly 5 f workout in the fog to his dominating win on the Marshall Turf Course winning by 6 1/2 lengths, there is priceless footage in this film, it will give you chills

"The most perfectly conformed, balanced individual" Jim Coleman, journalist. "He picks up his halter and throws it around", "he is in love with his pony", groom Eddie Sweat. "The greatest horse I've ever seen" John. J. Mooney, President, Ontario Jockey Club.

SECRETARIAT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION MARCH 27-29 AT THE MEADOW EVENT PARK FEATURING TRIPLE CROWN TRIO – CHARLIE DAVIS, BILL NACK AND KATE TWEEDY

Secretariat’s exercise rider, his biographer and the Chenery family historian will all be celebrating Big Red’s birthday at his birthplace, The Meadow, March 27-29. Charlie Davis, who galloped “Big Red” for his workouts; acclaimed author Bill Nack, whose book Secretariat – The Making of a Champion served as inspiration for Disney’s major motion film Secretariat; and Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery and co-author of Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend will be greeting fans throughout the weekend. The birthday event is part of the new Virginia Horse Festival at Meadow Event Park.

Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte was slated to attend but was injured in a vehicle accident on March 9. Plans are in motion to provide ways that fans can send their well wishes to Turcotte during the birthday event.

One of the major highlights of the celebration will be the VIP Reception and Secretariat Storytelling Program on March 28. This will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. in Meadow Hall with guests of honor Davis, Nack and Tweedy. After the reception, Nack will share an intimate perspective on Secretariat, providing his favorite stories and personal recollections. His compelling presentation features video footage from Secretariat’s Triple Crown races, to be followed by a question-and-answer session with him, Turcotte, Davis and Tweedy. Tickets are $100 and must be purchased by March 22. Seating is limited. The price also includes one-day admission to the Virginia Horse Festival.

Another new feature this year will be VIP tram tours of the farm. The tours offer the unique experience of hearing stories from Secretariat team members while seeing the historic barns and grounds. VIP tram tour tickets are $25 and will be available on site each day at the Narrated Tour Station, first-come, first-serve. Basic tram tours are also available for $5.

Fans will also be able to meet the Secretariat team in the exhibit hall where they will be signing autographs at various times at the Secretariat booth. Rare Meadow Stable memorabilia will be on display and exclusive Secretariat merchandise will also be available for purchase.

On Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m., Secretariat team members will go to the show ring for the Meadow Descendants Gathering to greet Thoroughbreds who have Secretariat or other Meadow Stable champions in their lineage. This “family reunion” will showcase not only the famous bloodlines, but also retired racehorses that have found new homes and new careers off the track. Here is the fact sheet and entry form for the Meadow Descendants Gathering.

The Virginia Horse Festival and Secretariat.com of Louisville, Ky., are co-hosting the Secretariat Birthday Celebration at The Meadow. The Meadow Event Park is owned by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. Secretariat.com oversees the development and management of all official Secretariat-related merchandise and events.

Maybe we're having trouble drawing new members into the grassroots of our sport has to do with the Own the Podium attitude. Horse sports are difficult, doublly so because every competitor is composed of two atheletes working as a team. Making it all about the medals and only supporting those who will win make it a rather crushing experience to be trying to work your way up the sport to excellence.

Michelle Harper’s physical education class was fun. There were only a few rules for most games: you weren’t allowed excessive celebrations after scoring a goal, you had to pass a minimum of three t...

Real live rocking horse :)

Horses were domesticated more than 5,000 years ago and have been deeply connected to humans ever since.

Long live the long format!

Long live the long format!

I think many people hear phrases like "long format/short format" bandied about, and it doesn't really compute, what the differences are.

Well, study this from 1974. That 5 minute 30 second steeplechase at 690 meters per minute meant you needed a horse that could gallop. And that 13 1/2 minute cross country, after about 1 1/2 hours of riding, meant he had to be ready to gallop a whole lot longer.

The whole deal was almost 18 miles long. It was 1 hour and 30 minutes of actual riding time.

Yesterday, at Fair Hill, for example, the entire day took 10 minutes, about 3 1/2 miles.

Now you can look me in the eye and say, "Well, these horses have to be just as fit as those horses", and if you want to believe that, go smoke some more of what you've been puffing.

For sure, dressage is harder now, and so is show jumping, but for sheer toughness, grit and endurance, it's like comparing apples and oranges, two entirely different sports, testing entirely different aspects of what constitutes a "good event horse."

This is not an "evolution" of a sport. It is a "substitution" of one sport for another. "Better" or "worse" is up to you, but totally different when you study it with critical analysis.

Aka stubborn, with love :)

The sport of eventing demands perseverance from its participants. Of all of the equestrian endeavors you could choose from, eventing could easily be considered the most difficult, requiring fortitude and pluck for when the riding gets rough, mixed with a sense of humor for the unexpected.
