SCARS takes in companion animals that are homeless or slated for euthanasia. We collect unowned or unwanted pets from remote area dog pounds and veterinary clinics that act as the pound. We also take in abandoned pets, many of which are sick or injured. Every animal is given medical assessment and any treatment it requires. We spay/neuter, vaccinate & microchip every animal that comes into our car

e. SCARS actively works within northern Alberta, particularly First Nations and Métis communities, to promote responsible companion animal guardianship. This includes providing spaying and neutering, vaccinations, micro-chipping and pet shelters. SCARS acknowledges that we are on Indigenous land in Treaty 6 territory. Land occupied, travelled, and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. SCARS operates within the traditional meeting ground, gathering place, and travelling route of the Nêhiyawak (Cree), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Métis, Dene, and Nakota Sioux.

Rocky the 8 year old husky & Elwood the 4 year old shep cross were found at a grocery store.

We know their ages because they are microchipped. Sadly, the owners could not be found. They had moved.

Both boys are very sweet and clearly had been cared for at some point. They love going for walks. Rocky being a husky loves to talk!

They both walk right into their kennels for bedtime.
These boys miss having a home. Please help us find them a permanent home. They do not have to stay together.

Hey there! It's so great to meet you—I'm Betsy! I came to SCARS care with my seven adorable pups, and now it's just me with three of my babies who are still looking for their forever home. Gwendoline, Peechee, and Wheeler are growing up fast and are almost my size now! They’re getting a bit cramped in our cozy little quarantine room at the Athabasca Facility, so we’re really hoping to find a loving family soon. 🐾❤️

Hello big world, I’m Rocket! It’s hard to tell in pictures but I’m what they call a low rider. Yup I look like a big dog but with short legs. I could be part basset hound. I am house trained and really like to be inside. Not a fan of this winter situation we have happening right now. I am around 2 years old and very friendly. I really dig people. I love when they walk me, I love when they pet me, I love when they look at me! I’m a real ladies man. I charm them all with my silly antics and my devilish good looks. The home I was in before had other dogs and so far I haven’t minded any of my new roommates here at SCARS.

If a short and sturdy guy sounds like your cup of tea give me a shout.

Oh and side note, I look great in a sweater 😉

Hi there my name is Penny Lane! I came to SCARS with my three buddies, also named after characters in Beatles songs. I am a sweet, loveable and adorable house panther. I am quite shy and reserved when we first meet, but with time and patience my love grows. I am really sweet and lovable. I would love to find my permanent home soon.

I love cat perches and toys so if you have those I will be very happy girl. I have only been around adults humans but with proper introductions I will do great with little humans.

I get along with cats in my foster home, but I could also be a happy solo cat. I do love some undivided attention with my people. I can’t wait to find my forever home. Could that be with you?

I’m Tuff and am the sweetest girl who loves to cuddle and play. I purr instantly when you pick me up and I have the softest fur. I think my ideal home would be a quiet family as I tend to do my own thing and come for cuddles now and again. I’m sure I’d be fine with other cats after taking time to warm up to them. Or you can adopt me and my brother Ruff together because it’s double the cuteness when we cuddle and sleep together.

Adoptable Bugsy is just the softest, sweetest boy. He has a tiny meow but uses it aggressively 🤣 He is mesmerized by the lights on the Christmas tree but mostly leaves them alone.

He was quite sure that the small humans were torturing him by not sharing lunch meat while they made sandwiches for their school lunches 😤

He'll probably do well in any home. He's very respectful of the other cats and the house rules.

🆘Calling ALL Barn Homes!! 📞

We have a few barn cats to place.

What do you need for them?
- A heated / insulated shelter of some sort where they can get access to food and water.
- The first 1-2 weeks - they’ll need somewhere where they can be contained in the barn/shop etc so they know where their new home is!
- Please note - they are FERAL & not friendly but they will be able to keep your rodent population down!

They come fully vaccinated, up to date on everything and are spayed and neutered.

Their adoption fee is $0.00 but donations are greatly appreciated. Apply online and memo BARN cats!!!!

😇Giving Tuesday😇 If only..... I hadn't been born without a home to a mother dog struggling to survive, without the simple vaccines to protect us. If only.... My teddy bear had the magical powers I believed it did. If it could have protected me and kept me safe while I huddled with it for comfort and warmth. If only..... Those kind rescuers could have found me sooner. I know they did their best and got me to veterinary care. If only.... There was a cure for parvo virus once we catch it. It is such an unforgiving disease, particularly for one so young. I tried so hard, but the disease was too much for me. I passed peacefully knowing love, hoping other pups like me don't have to ask.... If only.... Pups like Vanni break our hearts and motivate the SCARS family to continue to work towards creating a better future. Malnourished, inadequate shelter, and exposure to a virus that can be prevented were more than her little body could fight. Hi my name is Mickey and I'm on the hunt for my new forever home. I am a bigger guy, but don't let my size fool you! I am an absolute love bug and I am here to please. I am working hard on my leash skills as I am a strong boy, but I know with the right combination of training and patience I'll get the hang of it. I am a very smart boy who has learned the art of scent training. I would love if my forever home would carry on with this as it will help me burn my energy and stimulate me mentally. My fosters say it's super easy to show you how to do this and will only benefit the both of us. Because of my size we think I would do best in a home with no small children. I am also not a fan of cats, but I have done well with female dogs with the same kind of energy as myself. I am hoping my forever home will be as active as I am, I love long walks, and I would make the best hiking companion. Do I sound like the missing piece to your puzzle? Our Story

The Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is a registered charity that is primarily volunteer operated. We are based out of Athabasca and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

SCARS helps communities by taking in dogs and cats that are unwanted or slated for euthanasia. We collect pets from remote area pounds and veterinary clinics that act as the pound. We also take in stray or abandoned pets, many of them are sick or injured. Every animal is given a veterinary and behavioural assessment and any medical care or rehabilitation it needs. We spay/neuter, vaccinate & microchip every animal that comes into our care. We have been in operation as a charity since 2003. We find loving homes for more than 1,000 pets every year.

Reducing pet overpopulation is also a big part of what we do. SCARS actively works within northern Alberta, particularly in First Nations and Métis communities, to promote responsible companion animal guardianship. Our Spay-Neuter-Return program provides spaying and neutering, vaccination and micro-chipping for owned pets, and our Walls 4 Winter program provides those who participate in SNR with an insulated pet shelter.
