SCARS takes in companion animals that are homeless or slated for euthanasia. We collect unowned or unwanted pets from remote area dog pounds and veterinary clinics that act as the pound. We also take in abandoned pets, many of which are sick or injured. Every animal is given medical assessment and any treatment it requires. We spay/neuter, vaccinate & microchip every animal that comes into our car

e. SCARS actively works within northern Alberta, particularly First Nations and Métis communities, to promote responsible companion animal guardianship. This includes providing spaying and neutering, vaccinations, micro-chipping and pet shelters. SCARS acknowledges that we are on Indigenous land in Treaty 6 territory. Land occupied, travelled, and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. SCARS operates within the traditional meeting ground, gathering place, and travelling route of the Nêhiyawak (Cree), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Métis, Dene, and Nakota Sioux.

Hi there!

My name is Diesel, and I’m so excited to tell you about myself! I’m a sweet, laid-back guy who just wants to be with my people. If you’re up for snuggles, so am I—I’m the best snuggler around. When you’re petting me, I’ll lean right into you to soak up all the love. I like to think I’m a lap dog, even though I don’t exactly fit. But hey, that doesn’t stop me from trying!

I love playing ball and having fun in the yard—it’s my favorite way to show off my goofy side. I’ve also been working on some commands! I know how to sit, roll over, shake a paw, and stay (though I’m still perfecting that last one). My foster mom says I’m super smart and a quick learner—I just want to make her happy.

I’ve been a very good boy indoors, with no accidents at all. I’m not sure how I’d feel about cats, and right now, I’m the only dog in the house. But I think I could make friends with another dog if given the chance. On walks, I do get a bit excited when I see bigger dogs, but the little ones don’t bother me. And I’ll be honest—squirrels drive me absolutely bonkers, and I have some good muscle behind me, so I’ll need someone strong to hold onto my leash just in case!

My foster family says I’m gentle and sweet with just the right amount of goofball energy. I’m also toy- and treat-motivated, which makes training fun for both of us! I’m eager to please and can’t wait to find my forever home.

❤️❤️Adoptable Tipsy! ❤️❤️

Hello, I'm Tipsy. I am a young Shep cross. I came into SCARS after I had been beat up by other dogs. I was inheat at the time. Being inheat with roaming dogs can be very dangerous to not only females but the males often fight to the death.

The damage to my leg was so extensive it could not be saved. I am a very friendly girl. Have lots of energy, and 3 legs does NOT slow me down. I am house trained and do well on a leash. I have not met a cat yet. I'm working on my manners with other dogs. I was reactive towards them when I first arrived with good reason. I have been doing pretty good but would say at this moment I can be selective.

I am a big, beautiful boy with a gorgeous coat.

I can be timid initially but my confidence is growing each day. When I get to know you, I am happy-go-lucky and would love to follow you everywhere.

I could use some basic leash manners and training to be the best boy I can be.

I’m the sweetest cat you’ll ever meet! I seem to like just about everyone and everything. I have a very relaxed personality and love to be around my foster humans. I like head scratches, belly rubs and even seem to like being carried around. As a bonus, I have the softest fur! I get along well with the other cats in my foster home and I would likely get along with other pets and kids as long as they are respectful towards me.

Spaying and neutering pets is a crucial action that can significantly impact the lives of countless animals. This process not only improves the health and behavior of pets but also addresses the overwhelming issue of animal overpopulation, which leads to tragic outcomes for many. 🥲

Jelly is a prime example of the consequences of not spaying and neutering. She is a gentle, yet emaciated mother dog who showed up at a residence in desperate need of help. It was apparent she had been nursing puppies recently, but sadly, their whereabouts remain unknown. Her arrival was both a cry for help and a stark reminder of the struggles faced by many mother dogs. 🥺

Every day, numerous mother dogs like Jelly are found struggling to survive in harsh conditions. They face the cold with little to no food, trying to care for their young. The constant influx of requests for help highlights the dire situation: there simply are not enough homes for all the animals in need.

Let's work together to spread awareness about the benefits of spaying and neutering. It's a simple yet powerful way to help save lives and can help create less strain on animal rescues in Alberta.

There is something truly magical about a day at the shelter when everyone ends the day snoring. A fantastic day of weather sets the perfect backdrop, brightening everyone's spirits and encouraging outdoor activities. Our dedicated staff and volunteering team give them so much love! The dogs wag their tails with excitement, and the cats purr contentedly as they explore their surroundings! As the day winds down the cats and dogs are comfortably snuggled in for the evening, each finding their favorite cozy spot. Content and relaxed, they drift off to sleep, dreaming of their forever homes. #adoptdontshop

We are so thankful for ALL our amazing vets! Westlock Vet and Aspen trails vet were able to fit in over 30 of our animals for surgeries, emergencies and more just today alone! Wow! These puppies will be available for adoption in no time!

Our Story

The Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is a registered charity that is primarily volunteer operated. We are based out of Athabasca and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

SCARS helps communities by taking in dogs and cats that are unwanted or slated for euthanasia. We collect pets from remote area pounds and veterinary clinics that act as the pound. We also take in stray or abandoned pets, many of them are sick or injured. Every animal is given a veterinary and behavioural assessment and any medical care or rehabilitation it needs. We spay/neuter, vaccinate & microchip every animal that comes into our care. We have been in operation as a charity since 2003. We find loving homes for more than 1,000 pets every year.

Reducing pet overpopulation is also a big part of what we do. SCARS actively works within northern Alberta, particularly in First Nations and Métis communities, to promote responsible companion animal guardianship. Our Spay-Neuter-Return program provides spaying and neutering, vaccination and micro-chipping for owned pets, and our Walls 4 Winter program provides those who participate in SNR with an insulated pet shelter.
