One of us has run away to Iceland and of course meeting all the cats we find is a must!! Meet Batman, Móa, Lúna and Nala, they are hanging out at the Icelandic cat cafe in Reykjavík called Kattakaffihúsið while they check out the humans who might be open to adoption. 😉
These fur babies are all up for adoption so if you live in Iceland and are looking for a furry companion, go meet them! We had a surprise jump onto our lap as well-all the better to survey her cat kingdom 😆
The coffee and desserts were yummy as well if you just need a cozy spot to duck out of the rain!

How amazing would a nudist cat cafe be?! Hhhmmm

**Thank you for overwhelming interest in Oona, we will be going through applications and making a decision this week**

Are you ready to welcome a unique and lovable feline into your life? Meet Oona, our gorgeous Lykoi cat with a personality as striking as her appearance!

Oona knows exactly what she likes and isn’t afraid to show it. This sassy girl is all about affection when you’ve earned her approval. She’s a chatterbox with her toys, chirping away as she plays. One of her favorite pastimes is birdwatching in her foster home’s outdoor catio, and she absolutely loves running on the cat wheel. When it’s time to relax, Oona enjoys belly rubs while lounging beside you watching TV. Just barely 3 years old, Oona is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She can be a bit cautious when meeting new people, but with a little time, she warms up and shows her loving side.

Lykoi’s are friendly and outgoing, though they may be reserved with strangers at first. They are known for their loyalty and affection, often displaying playful and exploratory behaviors rather than being lap cats. Curious, intelligent, and trainable, Lykoi cats often enjoy a constantly rotating supply of toys and can even learn tricks. They are sometimes described as having doglike traits, with some even wagging their tails and running in packs.

The Lykoi, also known as the Werewolf Cat or Wolf Cat, gets its name from the Greek word “lycos,” meaning wolf. With their grizzled, wild hair coat and distinctive “mask,” these cats are reminiscent of werewolves. Despite their rough appearance, Lykoi are surprisingly soft to the touch. Their faces are hairless around the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth, giving them a unique, wild look.

If you think you’re ready to offer Oona the loving home she deserves, you can apply by visiting our website at www.albertasphynxrescue.ca, downloading & completing an application then emailing it to us at [email protected]

Meet Milo, the Newest Member of the ASR Family!

We would like to introduce Milo, a five year old, super affectionate, little guy who has stolen our hearts! Milo loves to snuggle up close, often falling asleep with his head on your pillow and snuffling your neck while purring like a freight train before drifting off.

Milo came to us from a kind-hearted lady who had only had him for a week. She quickly realized he had trouble eating due to severe dental decay. Despite being told he was healthy, it was clear to her that Milo had been in significant discomfort for some time. Recognizing she couldn't provide the care he needed, she reached out to us for help.

Since joining us, Milo has received dental treatment, vaccinations, and a microchip. We are also addressing some skin issues he has and trying to get some weight onto him.

Milo has an eye condition called lateral strabismus; we are not entirely sure how it affects his vision but it sure makes him unique, as his eyes look off to each side; then add the tongue blep; you can’t help but to fall in love with him!

If you would like to know more about Milo please visit our website to download & complete an application then email it to us at [email protected]

Meow!!!

We are so grateful for the generosity of every single person who attended the Drag/Burlesque show-especially the performers and organizers😻😻Thank you.

From Edmonton International Cat Festival:

We are so thrilled to ameownce that our 2024 Cat-themed Drag and Burlesque Fundraising Show held at 9910 in partnership with Q***r Joy YEG—raised $3,000 for the Alberta Sphynx Rescue!! 🥳🫶🏻

This Adults Only 18+ fundraising event was one of our standalone CATivities held as part of the Edmonton International Cat Festival MONTH—celebrating our 10-year anniversary. 🐾

While our main festival proceeds are being donated to Community Cats Edmonton, Enoch Animal Services and Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society, we designated this particular event as a smaller fundraiser for Alberta Sphynx Rescue.

We say smaller—but this $3,000 is going to make a huge impact for the work the ameowzing crew at Alberta Sphynx Rescue do!

“Your support not only helps us provide essential care & medical attention to the cats in our rescue, but it also allows us to open our doors to future cats that find themselves in a bad situation. The dedication and effort you all put into raising these funds is truly inspiring, and we are deeply grateful for your generosity.”
– Alberta Sphynx Rescue

Thanks to all involved including Edmonton Cat Festival Organizer James Harley, Q***r Joy, 9910, Dolly's Cocktails, The Common, performers Demi Dommage Moses Motors Stabitha Morwounds Scorpia Scales, YOU (purrticipants) and more!

**ADOPTED**

We are thrilled to announce that Joy is ready to find her forever home! After a harrowing, near death experience back in March with the severe pyometra she arrived to us from auction with and undergoing a major dental procedure with multiple extractions, Joy has made an incredible recovery. Your generous donations assisted us in paying her nearly $4,300 in medical bills in full. We can't thank you enough for your support!

Joy, affectionately called Maggie Joy or MJ by her foster mom, is the sweetest little girl you’ll ever meet. At 5 years old she’s finally learning to play with her wand toy and springs, and she loves being close to your face or perched on your shoulders. While she's not a fan of traditional baths, she does enjoy sitting between the shower curtains and being pet with wet hands or a wet cloth; a sneaky bath of sorts.

Joy will rush to greet you at the door every day, eager to share all about her day. She loves soaking up the sun and will bask in its warmth until it sets. Joy isn’t a fan of dogs but could get along well with a laid-back cat friend. She does have a non urgent heart echo scheduled for next year, and her adoptive home will be responsible to ensure that happens and that they keep up with her annual scan.

If you think you can provide the perfect home for Joy, please download our application from our website (www.albertasphynxrescue.ca) and email it to us at [email protected].

Let’s find this sweet girl the loving home she deserves!

Her adoption fee is $750.00.

**FOSTER FAIL**

Hey ASR family, we have someone special to introduce! Meet Goose, a 7-month-old Sphynx kitten with a heart as big as his spirit.

Goose journeyed to us from Ontario, thanks to a kind soul who couldn't bear the thought of him being abandoned by the breeder due to his heart murmur. She took him in and reached out to us for help. After weeks of care and a visit to the cardiologist, Goose was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called an atrial septal defect. He has a hole on the lower right side of his heart which causes blood from his high pressure chamber to be pushed into his low pressure chamber via this hole; thus causing a very loud murmur, see link in comments for more info.

Join us tomorrow at the Block Party for Edmonton International Cat Festival at Dolly’s (9902 109 St) from 5:30 - 8:00 pm to meet Goose, Sephera & Punkin. They will be there, charming everyone and winning hearts. As Goose’s foster momma said; with his medical costs at $1,200 and counting, he needs to earn his keep and spread awareness about his condition and the side effects of unethical breeding.

Come out, support Goose, and enjoy a wonderful evening with our ASR cats then grab yourself a ticket and head over to 9910 for the Burlesque Drag Show where all proceeds will be donated to ASR.

**ADOPTED**

ASR Family; Meet Mya and Chance, our precious senior pair in need of a loving home to spend their golden years. At 13 years old, this bonded pair are faced with the challenge of having to start over with a new family quite late in life. Their previous human loved them dearly but had to make the heart-wrenching decision to part ways due to life's unforeseen turns.

Mya and Chance appear to be resilient souls; they are a little scared and confused but settling in with their foster Mom. Mya, with her toothless grin and Chance with his few remaining teeth are the absolute sweetest pair. Both are declawed due to circumstances beyond their control (please no mean comments about this).

As seniors, they require special care and attention, including a vet-prescribed diet to keep them healthy and happy. Additionally, their new home must be pet-free, as they lack the means to defend themselves. However, they adore people and would thrive in a household with compassionate and understanding individuals, including cat-savvy children.

Mya and Chance yearn for a peaceful haven where they can bask in the warmth & love of a caring family. If you feel called to open your heart and home to this deserving duo, please consider visiting our website www.albertasphynxrescue.ca to download &
complete an application then email it to us at [email protected] with the subject line "The Seniors."

Please help us give Mya and Chance the love and comfort they deserve in their twilight years.

Meet the handsome Larry. He is a very cool cat and he loves to give nose nibbles when he loves you. He has the best quiet purr and sleeps under the covers with his cold feet pushed up against you 😆
We’ve quietly been getting to know him and Dr Kate - The Cat Vet believes that he has feline hyperesthesia….. Feline hyperesthesia syndrome is an unusual condition because the demonstrated behaviors may be triggered by different factors, such as fleas, environmental stress, myositis, seizures, spinal or neuropathic pain, and other sources of pain. Feline hyperesthesia syndrome may also be a compulsive behavioral disorder.
The syndrome will remain present for the cat's entire life, but episodes only last for one to two minutes, in Larry’s case he takes a bit to shake off the episode. He is now on fluoxetine and gabapentin to help him manage.
Anxiety and stress seem to add to a cat's hyperesthetic reaction, so a treatment plan will often include some behavioral aspects to minimize these. This might include medications to affect behavior and/or establishing a routine to minimize stress associated with change for your cat.

Larry is not available for adoption at this time

We do have some new cats to introduce soon-keep watching.

For those of you that were following her story; Critteraid has made the most incredible progress with her. Seeing this story brings tears of happiness to our eyes, she deserved to experience love and she will now have that for the rest of her life with Caroline.

Thank you CritterAid for giving our girl a chance 💕

Meet Harriet, our adorable 6-year-old tortie Sphynx with the biggest ears and an even bigger meow!

Harriet comes to us from a loving family who despite their best efforts to overcome a sudden onset of allergies had to make the difficult decision to surrender her to our care. Harriet had the best care with her family and they ensured that she had all her prized possessions with her for her new home.

This sweet girl is looking for a family that will make her the center of their world. She prefers to be the only pet, as she loves to have all the attention to herself. Harriet can be a bit scared of loud noises and fast movements, so a home with no children or older cat-savvy kids would be ideal.

Harriet's favorite pastimes include sitting on your lap, giving you head bunts & kisses, making biscuits, and purring up a storm. She's also quite the chatterbox and will happily fill you in on all the details of her day when you come home.

If you think you could give Harriet the loving home she deserves, please visit our website at www.albertasphynxrescue.ca to download & complete an application then email to us at [email protected] with Harriet in the subject line.

**ADOPTED**

Meet Mama Iris, the last of the Devon/Sphynx gang that came into our care back in September. Iris is a stunning girl with her wavy Devon coat and a heart full of love. She is about 2.5 yrs old and spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Playful and energetic, Iris may be a bit shy in new surroundings, but once she warms up to you, she'll be your loyal companion. Notice her puffy purr cheeks! She enjoys climbing her cat tree to watch the world and has a favorite mushroom toy she adores and carries everywhere.

Iris was an incredible momma to her little orange babies & now she is ready to embark on her own journey to find a loving family. We believe she'd thrive with older children and a laid-back cat friend. While we're unsure about dogs, we suspect a cat-savvy dog could be a good match.

If you're looking to add a sweet and affectionate feline to your family, consider welcoming Iris into your home. Visit www.albertasphynxrescue.ca to download an application then email it to us at [email protected] with Iris in the subject line.

Iris’s adoption fee is $500

Today, our hearts ache as we share the heartbreaking news that our sweet old lady Aria has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Despite months of tireless efforts to figure out her health issues and help her overcome her behavioural struggles; this morning we found her in a permanent sleep curled up in her favourite bed.

Aria's gentle nose boops and melodious chatter will forever echo in our hearts, reminding us of the love she brought into our lives. Though she may be gone, her spirit will continue to inspire us to help more cats like her.

Run free, sweet Aria. You will be deeply missed.

**Forever Foster Oliver Update**

Human took me to see the fancy heart doctor again. We left our house when it was still dark outside so that I could be in Calgary on time. It was a big drive but I kept human company and told her stories the entire way.

The fancy doctor said that I have had no progression with my heart since my last check and that she is happy with the results. I will have to keep taking my medicine but we are hopeful that the Rapamycin is doing good things for me.

Rapamycin is an experimental drug that has shown positive results in an HCM study done by UC Davis and I am one of the lucky cats in Canada to be on it (my foster brother Bruce is on it as well).

Human and I then drove all the way back home to Edmonton the same day; I made sure I yelled at all the slow drivers for human; she says I’m the bestest co-pilot.

My next fancy doctor visit is in July, this is the month that human calls heart health month and takes me and all my foster sibling to the fancy doctor. Screening for HCM is a very important part of Sphynx ownership and human makes sure we all get the bestest care.

Our sweet Joy is recovering quietly and getting lots of cuddles and kisses. We can already tell she’s feeling so much better and she’s letting us know too, as she purrs non stop when we are with her. Joy insists on giving some pretty serious nose smushies and kisses and likes to have her nose touching yours. We had a little nap with her till 3am this morning and it was wonderful to see her settle in and give a big sigh and go to sleep. We steathily grabbed our phone for one of these photos to show just how much she wants to connect with touch. 🐾

Joy wants everyone to know that she appreciates everyone who has donated and gifted items to her from our Amazon wish list( Joy only eats canned food due to her teeth ) and she says she’s ready to make some serious biscuits to help out.

Joy is very grateful for Sphynx Justice for having the ability to bid on her and save her.

We popped photos back into her update (and in comments) just to show any new followers just what she was facing on Saturday just after pick up from the auction. Don’t peek if you are squeamish-we share these to make people aware.

**JOY UPDATE**

Yesterday, Joy underwent emergency surgery, and the ordeal was more harrowing than we could have ever imagined. The surgery was imperative as Joy's blood work revealed an alarming level of infection. The vet determined that waiting was not an option; Joy's life hung in the balance as her uterus was full of infection & oozing pus. As if that weren't enough, during the procedure and subsequent recovery, a concerning heart anomaly was detected, adding another layer of worry to an already fraught situation.

We shudder to think what would have happened had Sphynx Justice not saved Joy & trusted us with her care. Had Joy not received the surgery when she did, she would not have made it. But our little fighter pulled through, and she's now back home, resting. Joy is not out of the woods yet, and we must remain vigilant; she's on the right path, but there are still hurdles ahead.

Your support & positive thoughts mean the world to us; please continue to keep Joy in your hearts as she bravely fights on.

We'll keep you updated on her progress every step of the way. Thank you for standing by us and for being a beacon of hope for Joy.

If you would like contribute to Joy’s ongoing care you can e-transfer or PayPal [email protected]

It’s been a day. We sure could use your help.
We thought we would have a lovely story to tell but sadly it’s not looking like we thought.

Our friends at Sphynx Justice had been watching the Alberta auction site that auctions off everything from pet toys to any type of animal. Sadly another Sphynx was on the site and possibly/likely pregnant and they asked if we would accept her into rescue just as we did for the boys from last year. Of course we said yes. They didn’t want to see her bred over and over and possible kittens also unethically bred with no care to health or genetics.

We picked her up this morning - she spent the night in a tiny kennel at the auction farm building as sellers drop off the day before pick up. She had nothing but a tiny fleece blanket and dog sweater. The newspapers and blanket lining the kennel were sopping wet with urine. No sign of food.

Unfortunately that’s not the worst of it.

We got her home and bathed her and cleaned her up as she was very smelly and had very dirty ears and feet/nails. While we were cuddling we noticed pus on our lap and as she walked to her bed there were large droplets on the floor behind her and a puddle when she laid down.

This poor girl is not pregnant but has pyometra and infection. Bloodwork and exam is being done as I type this….

We are looking at emergency surgery for her and as you all know, it’s going to be costly.

It’s shameful she’s in this state and was auctioned off like she was nothing. It’s shameful that someone thought to sell her with no care about where she’d end up or what might happen to her.

This infection and pyometra didn’t magically appear this morning…. The breeder had to have known and didn’t care. If untreated-she would die. All the auction guarantees is a “live” animal.

We sure know that things are tough financially right now but if you feel you could help us out we’d sure love your help with what’s going to be a costly day for us with estimates near $3500

We have named her Joy in honor of Sphynx Justice’s beloved grandmother.
