Beautiful day today. Finally cooler than the past few weeks. Only one fire burning here! But it’s big!! 🤞Hopefully forestry makes good progress today!! People and structures are so far, untouched here.

🤬 2 dogs are dead after being left at a ROVER (in her home) dog sitter.

Although it can be less expensive to use an In home dog service, there are reasons behind this! They do not have proper experience, policies or insurances. They do not comply with city by laws or regulations. Often their experience is from owning a dog. (10yrs experience as they had a 10yr old dog)

If you are paying attention to this story you will see that this house was not set up for dog care. Even if empty, there are many things in a house, like unpainted wood or carpeting that make having a sterile environment impossible, as it cannot be disinfected. A house is suitable for your pets to live in but it is not suitable for a rotation of animals to be in.

Even if the individual is a trained professional, their lust for money is greater than their care for your dog, if they skip some necessary expenses that protect your pet. If there was ever a issue with the care of your dog, the individuals home insurance will NOT cover an illegal business. Leaving you to deal with a lawsuit for vet bills, pressing charges or worse.

When we opened our shop in Lincoln, Ontario we did so because as per bylaw YOU CANNOT GROOM, or KENNEL (inc daycare) in your home, within town boundaries. Grimsby is similar with kennelling/daycare but grooming is permitted in home. (Clovelly was grandfathered) We had put additional insurance on our jeep to ensure they were covered during transport, and additional business insurance to cover them if we kept them over night. These rules and zoning regulations made it very difficult for us to find a location that would allow us to expand our business in Niagara, like we had hoped. There is only one township in Niagara Region that allows for all the services we provided in one location. ($$$ and no appropriate location available) Our current location in BC does not have by laws and zoning regulations to deter us from having the business on our home property, and encouraged us to move to our desired retirement location and are permitted to operate from home.

It is worth the extra money spent to know your dog is with people who have actual experience with many breeds and situations, knowledge, first aid, training, It is important that your dogs are supervised at all times or are kennelled, to ensure their safety. Many things can happen if dogs are allowed to free roam with others while the sitter is not watching, like sleeping at night. Dogs are very “spontaneous” so you should be prepared to avoid incident ahead of time.

ROVER is also responsible for this incident, as they advertised this individual, scheduled this care, they received a portion of what was paid for this care. They should ensure that those that they support or promote are not this type of person. That the dogs are housed safely and in a desirable legal building, but Idk how ROVER operates or how they pick/train the people they take on. I believe they do provide some insurance but idk what it exactly covers.
I’m going to watch this case and see how much responsibility they take on as a company.

I hope this female is never near an animal again and that ROVER creates better policies to avoid this horror.

More people are coming forward with allegations that their pets died or were injured at a Hamilton dog boarding business.
