Bandit and his family are taking the Canine Etiquette Course, 12 in-home training sessions. Bandit started barking, lunging, and attacking humans that would come to the home since the birth of their newborn baby born last month. After 5 sessions, we entered an Alberta deep freeze where all of my sessions with every case I’m working on right now, were put on hold until the weather improved. I couldn’t in good conscience leave these guys with a newborn for two weeks while this behavior took place. I picked him up and brought him to my place. At my farm he learned proper interactive skills from my well balanced pack. At first he was standoffish and would almost disassociate while the pack interacted. By the end of his stay with me he was confidently greeting new dogs and even engaging in submissive wrestling with some of the other dogs. This was a beautiful testimony after I dropped him off. One of the most important parts of addressing a dogs reactivity or any negative reactions is figuring out if they feel the need to defend themselves out of insecurity and lack of understanding on how to properly communicate their feelings that may have, and in this case, stemmed from poor social skills. However in other aggression cases, dealing with confident dominant dogs, some have prey drive that is triggered and heightened by weaker energy like a child, a prey animal, small dogs, cats or submissive dogs. A different approach would be taken for prey driven, confident-dominant cases. Bandit is an eager to please dog who will require his humans with the continuous homework and help from myself, to continue building his social skills and confidence. This way he won’t see people coming to the home as a threat. www.wildfreecanine.com
