Dog Tales Rescue is a dog rescue and horse sanctuary like no other in the world! We are located on an incredible 50 acres of green fields, rolling hills, and wooded areas in King City Ontario, just a short drive from downtown Toronto. Our picturesque location is the perfect safe haven for lost, abused and neglected animals to heal and be rehabilitated while they wait for loving forever homes.

Update: We received a lot of interest from you all to help Jake. He has a meet and greet with a potential home tomorrow and his owner has cancelled his euthanasia appointment. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for spreading the word and reaching out to assist. We will continue to forward interested adopters to Jake’s current owner incase plans fall through. Thank You for saving Jake’s life ♥️

URGENT ‼️ Scheduled for euthanasia tomorrow ‼️

We received an intake request for a dog named Jake. Our shelter is at capacity and we are unable to help. We are sharing Jake in hopes another rescue or experienced home can take him in.

Jake is a 1.5 year old Cane Corso Mix. Due to his living situation he is not getting along with another male dog in the home and is scheduled to be euthanized by his family tomorrow. Jake is amazing with his people and extremely loyal. He can be protective and reactive toward strangers (lunging and barking) He will need further training and management with this. He shows potential as he is very food motivated and trainable. He is currently in the Toronto area.

Based off his history he should not be in a home with children, cats or male dogs.

Share this post to reach someone that may have the space and resources to rescue Jake.

Sweet and good for you. These new residents are ripe for the picking!

Picked up and taken home, of course!

Apple, Cherry, Papaya, Fig & Kiwi came to us from a backyard breeder.

All pretty bruised … both in body and spirit.

The term “backyard breeder” doesn’t convey the horror and neglect that often occurs in those environments. Unsanitary. No medical care, no healthy food, no exercise or fresh air is the norm. Dogs bred over and over again, stuck in cages.

These ones are healing wonderfully and beginning to open up.

After many, many hours of agonizing over this decision, Moo Moo was laid to rest. He had sustained a leg injury in the paddock and was hospitalized and treated. We did everything (everything!) we could … to no avail.

Under stall rest, he could no longer get up and we knew it was time.

We are so grateful to this cow, our Moo Moo. In some ways, when he arrived here at Dog Tales in 2015, we became a true farm sanctuary. We had dogs and horses but had not yet ventured into welcoming “farmed” animals. We’re SO glad we did!

Moo Moo (along with Bambi) was rescued as a baby from auction. They still had their umbilical cords hanging from their bellies. Let that sink in. Torn from their mothers. That is the dairy industry.

We had to mother him and became educated very quickly on cow needs. Bottle feeding, cuddling, running, grooming and playing.

Moo Moo was just a baby and then he became a very, very big baby! He was stunning.

Male Holsteins rarely live past a year as they are deemed useless. Contained cruelly for veal or sent for slaughter immediately, Moo Moo was a rare breed … he was rescued.

We learned so much from him and he became an ambassador for educating people on the dairy industry here at Dog Tales during our Open House farm tours.

More than that, he was adorable. Used to people from the beginning, he loved attention and affection.

Moo Moo lived his days happily with his herd. We will forever miss seeing him out in the field.

Thank you Moo Moo. You were magnificent. Run free forever.

There are so many layers to love in this project!

An invested teacher looking to inspire his students.

Everyone’s hearts invested in the process and using the art pieces in service to others - our dogs!

Just look at what these amazing students have done! They truly captured the essence of our residents in the most beautiful ways.

We had tears and goosebumps when opening these gifts.

Inspired by the incredible feats of athleticism at the Olympics, we’re having some fun!

In truth, it is the human stories unfolding in Paris that are most compelling.

Overcoming challenges, testing commitment, pushing oneself beyond what you believe you are capable of in the quest for excellence. Awe inspiring!

We like to think our rescue dogs and our team here at Dog Tales are on a journey with some parallels to what those athletes encounter.

Our residents aren’t going for gold though … they are gold!

We’re rolling out a fruit loop!

But their bodies, hearts and minds aren’t completely secure in a shelter.

Shelby’s spirit is bright and strong … but her body isn’t.

This beautiful girl has a terminal cancer diagnosis. She has T-cell lymphoma, the most aggressive form. Typically, even with the chemotherapy she has received, the average lifespan is 3-8 months.

We consider loving palliative dogs not any kind of burden but rather a great privilege.

We’re urgently looking for a quiet foster home to provide soft comfort and care for her final days.

Surely there is a sweet soul somewhere out there who wants to love Shelby on her way to the other side. Please share far and wide to help us find them.

We’re posting the same post, with the same data. And it tells the same story.

Surrender after surrender after surrender application. A rushing river of owners looking to unload their dogs.

And a trickle of adoption applications. Nothing is changing despite our best efforts.

We knew this was coming but we didn’t know exactly what it would feel like.

It’s horrible to feel this helpless in the face of so many unwanted dogs suffering. We feel desperate.

We can see what needs to be done - increase adoptions and get people to stop buying puppies at the bare minimum.

As many of you have pointed out, legislative change to ban backyard breeders is the ultimate solution but we’re drowning in the immediate consequences right now.

Please, please educate everyone you know. Check out our Dog Tales Community Rehome page and visit our Open Houses to meet some of our sweet, sweet and ever so adoptable dogs!

It’s all the behind the scenes people. The lighting crew, the makeup artists, the photographers, the tailors and set designers to name a few.

We don’t know where to start. But we’ll begin with the end.

Our warrior, Jordan, passed last week after spending his final days in his forever home.

If this boy had never softened to us, never allowed our touch, never wagged his tail when people came close, we would have understood.

As some of you may know, Jordan came to us from Mozambique in 2015, having spent his life chained to a generator where they threw rocks and taunted him in order to keep him agitated and aggressive. Sick.

In some ways, he was our hardest case, one we committed to never giving up on. And he came around. Slowly, slowly, slowly and only with certain ones. Smart.

Jordan’s health began to decline in 2023 when he had a splenectomy. He then began medication for renal disease. The degenerative joint disease was diagnosed in March 2024 and a malignant mass just this June 2024.

We were consulting with an oncologist, knowing he was palliative, when the miracle happened. Jordan was adopted. It was truly like an angel had arrived.

Two beautiful humans took Jordan home. A day we never thought we would ever see. And he was so, so happy in his home. We would only have made that big of a change in his world unless we were absolutely certain. We were certain.

Jordan spent 3200 days at Dog Tales and 8 in his home where he was finally completely at ease.

We were right about an angel arriving in the form of his adopters, we just didn’t know they were to shepherd him all the way home so soon.

We feel like our world could learn a lot from Jordan. A warrior in the face of hate and a warrior in having the courage to choose to love.

His essence is indelibly marked in our hearts. His story symbolizes everything that Dog Tales stands for.

We will continue to fight to rescue others in your name, Jordan.

We love you so much. This is so damn hard.

Deja 🩷

Deja is amazing in a home environment; she is very calm and loves spending time on the couch. She will paw at people for attention and belly rubs. She gets along very well with cats, and is very gentle and will mind her own business. She will be most comfortable in a home without children, as she is very nervous and reactive to quick movements. She can also be uncomfortable if someone she doesn't know well invades her space. We have been working on leash training with Deja, and she has improved quite a bit, although she can be reactive towards other dogs, and sometimes towards children.

There are so many complicated layers in the world of rescue.

All dogs deserve to be rescued, rehabilitated and adopted so that they can rest easy in a safe home.

The reality is that some dogs have behavioural issues that need to be addressed before they can be adopted. That process takes time and resources to accomplish.

We have taken in so many that are working through this process with our dedicated staff but we are at capacity with not enough time to give them all the training they need.

We are reaching out to ALL shelters in North America to please, please contact us at [email protected] if you have some room for the hard cases.

The dogs that need our love even more.

We remain committed to our mission, doggedly determined, come what may …

What the month of May brought was more surrenders in total that we had in the past few months. It’s no surprise, summer is around the corner.

To be clear, the red SURRENDERED refers to the application, not an intake.

Surrendering a dog isn’t a given. It’s barely an option. We are at capacity like every other shelter. There are situations where it is a last resort and we are so grateful that we can sometimes be of service. Owners pass. Sudden homelessness, illness and poverty are real tragedies.

In some ways we’re preaching to the choir with our followers. Who we really need to reach are the others.

The others are people who are genuinely, innocently ignorant when it comes to dogs.

The ones who really don’t know or understand the responsibilities of owning a dog and there are many. The time required, the value of pet insurance, the cost of care (vets are expensive!) and the commitment to exercise, grooming and good training.

We need more than our team here at Dog Tales. We need you as a collective to keep sharing these posts.

Stop buying puppies, adopt from a shelter, be prepared for unexpected costs before getting a dog, hire a trainer and/or a dog walker. Steer clear of Kijiji.

Educate everyone you know. Knowledge is power 🙏

We bring them to life, it is our responsibility to care for them for life.Bella is looking for a home at Dog Tales Rescue ❤️ More about Bella: Bella is a smart and lovable dog! This pup knows every trick in the book! Bella is very active and could play fetch and swim all day long. This sweet girl was surrendered to us with a past of abuse and neglect. This makes it hard for Bella to trust people and other dogs. She will need lots of guidance and slow introductions when meeting people, and she should not interact with other dogs. Bella has learned many ways to manage her nerves around strangers and will need a confident owner to implement her training. Bella would do best in an adult-only home with a fully fenced backyard.

Ahhhhh, bliss. Stormy indulging in a little self-care is good for our soul! Come on now, who is taking this beauty home? 💅Stormy is a 2 Year Old, Pomeranian. This cutie is a ball of fluff and love! Stormy is super cuddly and loves to zoom around. Stormy would do well in a home with dogs and children. She has a history of seizures, therefore her forever family will have to monitor her condition and administer medication. In return, she’ll give you endless love!

He’s aged well, our handsome boy. But, well … we wish we hadn’t been the ones to witness it. Domino is one of the first 20 dogs rescued here at Dog Tales. Sadly, that means he has been here far too long. He was originally surrendered to us in 2015. Adopted twice but it never worked out. The shelter has been his home most of the time. Sharing on behalf of Mary-Ann from LEAP for Lucy ❣️ Elephants are magnificent. Arguably somewhat magical. On World Elephant Day it is right to honour our planet’s largest land animal. There is a lot to marvel at! And while we are in awe of their size, let’s revere their spirit. Did you know that elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror? They have large, complex brains and intricate social structures with the capacity for altruism. Now if only we could return this energy. Kindly watch this video so that you may feel empowered to preserve and protect these beautiful animals, in particular Lucy, who continues to languish unnecessarily in an Edmonton zoo.

Many of the Hebron people are torturing, killing and laughing while documenting their barbaric behaviour then posting videos to their social media platforms. We cannot fathom the enjoyment they find in torturing and killing helpless stray dogs who are just trying to survive. Please share for these dogs. The people in Hebron's government need to see sense, compassion and humanity. We need to take care of this now and ensure that if anyone has this idea in the future they will think twice after seeing the world's response to this atrocity.
