Finley came in for a visit today to get his vaccinations updated. He also got a refill of his Nexgard Spectra to make sure he steers clear from fleas and ticks this summer! ☀️

Finley is a very good boy, and was so happy to get lots of love and attention (and treats!) from all the staff. 🥰

Thanks for coming to visit Finley! 💛

UPDATE: Cooper has returned home! 🏡

🚨 MISSING CAT 🚨

Cooper got out of his apartment (possibly by jumping off the balcony) on Thursday, June 6th near Nelson’s Landing Blvd.

04/06/2024

With summer right around the corner, the warmer weather will start promoting growth of Cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae. This dangerous bacteria is typically found in ponds, lakes and streams. Drinking or swimming in contaminated water can cause your pet to become very ill, and in serious cases can be fatal. 🐕

Cyanobacteria is not always visible to the naked eye, but it can have a similar appearance to algae when it clumps together in bodies of water. Sometimes the bacteria will rapidly reproduce, causing Cyanobacteria blooms/mats. 🦠

Here are some tips to help avoid blue-green algae poisoning:

- Keep your dog on a leash around bodies of water, especially if the water doesn’t appear to be clean. 🌊
- Don’t allow your dogs to drink out of ponds and lakes. 💦
- Do research on ponds and lakes you visit to check for reported cases of blue-green algae. 🏞️
- Rinse your dog off with clean water after swimming, to avoid them ingesting toxins while grooming. 👅

If you have found a possible case of blue-green algae, be sure to report it immediately.

To find more helpful information on blue-green algae, visit this website: https://novascotia.ca/blue-green-algae

If you think your pet has come in contact with blue-green algae, rinse them off with clean water and contact your veterinarian immediately. Be sure to keep your canine companions safe from algae toxicities this summer! 🐶☀️

Be advised that as of August 1st, the rules for traveling with dogs to the US will be changed. Be sure you’re in touch with the CFIA and your family veterinarian to make sure everything is in order before planning any trips with your furry friend!

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

The Metro Animal Emergency Clinic has exciting news!

We have been providing emergency and critical care for patients of the HRM and beyond for many years...27 in fact! In that time we have prided ourselves on serving our community with the very best in critical care and emergency veterinary medicine.

As April is often not as busy as other months for our hospital, we have made the unprecedented decision to close the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic from 8am Thursday April 4th until 6pm Monday April 15th. This temporary closure will allow our staff members to spend that period of time training with our Medical Director, Dr. Taylor Whitcombe, learning new techniques and procedures so staff new (and experienced!) have the opportunity for further education - an important part of emergency medicine.

We don't take closing lightly! But we want to take the opportunity to support all our staff at the same time with more learning opportunities in the challenges emergency medicine presents. Our goal is always to provide only the highest standards in veterinary medicine, which we have done for the past 27 years.

Our thanks go out to our veterinary colleagues and clients for their continued support. We're looking forward to serving the HRM and beyond for many years to come!

There is nothing better than a litter of 7 week-old Maltese puppies to end our Friday evening!

They came in to see us for their initial vaccinations and deworming doses. We made sure to give them lots of cuddles before sending them home!

We wish these sweet pups the best of luck as they go off to their forever homes.🤍
