Manding: What is it? How does it work? Why teach it?

Manding is a way for our dogs to have a say when they would like something from us. Many dogs default to barking at us when they'd like something from us, manding is a way to empower pups to have a voice by doing a polite behavior (sitting). It's not a rule that a dog requires to mand for everything in life. I live in a "Plenty in life is free" dog training model.

Nobody wants to carry stinky dog snacks everywhere they go! Here are some tips for fading the use of treats in your training.

1. Use real life rewards once a behavior is solid. In the beginning you will need to mix together real life rewards with treats. For example - use your dogs favourite squeaky toy as a reward for 3 reps, the forth use a treat.

2. Begin asking for more tricks/behaviors per treat. In the beginning of teaching a new behavior you should be rewarding after each successful response. But once he has the hang of it, start to ask him to perform a few behaviours before reinforcing. Keep it varied to keep your dog guessing when the next reward will be.

3. Vary how often you reinforce and what you use to reinforce. You may reward with a treat after one successful response, then a ball toss for 2 behaviors, then a treat for three behaviors. Avoid patterns as dogs easily pick up on them.

Remember; your dog decides what's reinforcing. If a behavior begins to deteriorate look at your reinforcers and up the ante. For a simple food reward I like to use cheerios.

Top 5 Skills to teach your dog - From a Certified Dog Trainer!

1. Manding : A polite way for your dog to ask. Sitting when wanting something. Sit for dinner, to go outside, to jump on couch. Opens dialogue between you and your dog. You're allowed to say 'not right now' to their requests!

2. Automatic Eye Contact : Build the connection. Scientifically proven to release feel good hormones. If their attention is on your they are more likely to listen!

3. Loose Leash Walking : Walks should be enjoyable for all involved! Tight leashes create frustration for both humans and canines.

4. Touch : Follow my hand. Allows a way to move your dog force-free. Into the car, off the couch, across the street.

5. Chin Rest : Husbandry care. A cooperative care skill to allow your dog a way to opt-in for vet care and grooming.
