It’s very important to me that my girls are sound, both from a temperament and physical point of view. I believe in the trifecta of testing, showing confirmation and trial in obedience and sport. While puppy families will often tell me that they don’t want a show dog and/or don’t plan to title their dog; which is fine, it’s important to me that I show, trial and work my dogs so that I know that I’m giving the puppies my girls produce the best chance at having a happy, sound, healthy life. I want to know that, whether our pups are beloved pets or working dogs; either way they are capable.
One of the things I’ve always wanted to do and learn is field work. Golden retrievers were originally bred as gun dogs, and it really does show of their intelligence, obedience, temperament and structure. If you ever get an opportunity to watch a dog retrieve in the field, do it! It will amaze you to watch these dogs work.
Through no fault of their own, my girls have not had a lot of opportunity to do fieldwork. When the opportunity presents itself, it reminds me of just how amazing these dogs are. There’s just something about a dog doing what it was bred for, watching their natural instincts come out… I’m just always amazed and feel blessed to have these beautiful dogs in my life.
It’s not a great video, but it does show Lucy and I learning together, at the very beginning stages of us learning to retrieve as a team. Lizzie is coming along too but I couldn’t get a second video to post.
