Our dogs wear their jackets no matter the weather, and they’re only able to sweat through their paws (vs us humans who have sweat glands all over).

With their ultra soft coats and Bambi eyes, puppies are irresistible to pick up and cuddle. Nevertheless, puppies and dogs NEED their own space, especially during down time. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We usually adopt puppies at the same time their parents are beginning to ween them. A mother weens her pups to encourage food foraging and self soothing habits. It’s at this time when a puppy is learning to be independent that we take them home and coddle their every need. Oops! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We completely understand the desire to have your new friend nap on your lap or sleep beside you in bed; however, these experiences act to predispose a dog’s tendency for separation anxieties. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What we can do to help our dogs transition, is set up a daily routine immediately upon adoption that everyone in the home can understand and follow. All dogs should have “safe spaces” that are always accessible & 100% theirs, like an open crate (which mimics a den) and dog bed. By creating clear household boundaries and a consistent daily routine, you will quickly be on the path to living with a well balanced dog. ⁣⁣

The key to this quote being successful is understanding what a reward truly is. ⁣

We often find owners do not clearly understand the association between physical touch and reward. Any form of physical touch from our hands to our dog results in a release of the bonding hormone, Oxytocin, which is interpreted by our dogs as a reward. Period.⁣
⁣
This is why it is so important never to soothe or try to calm a reactive dog by massaging or petting them. This type of “redirection” only encourages and REWARDS the exact behaviour you are trying to avoid.⁣
⁣
Soothing our dog while they’re reactive or misbehaving is actually selfish as it soothes our anxiety about the situation while counterproductively promoting our dogs anxiety. This is SO confusing for them. 🙈😫⁣
⁣
Next time you redirect your dog, ask yourself “do I need to physically touch them with my hands OR could I use a lead, guide with my legs, or use a command they know? More often than not you will find you can get away with a hands free redirection. Good luck and stay safe, fwends!
