AB Herding Dog Rescue The dogs are primarily Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Kelpies, Belgian Malinois & German Shepherds, to list just a few.

Our goal is to find pet homes for those dogs that don't herd, working homes for those that do & generally active homes that will give the breeds what they need to make better choices in new situations. For over 20 years, with friends in ranching, herding and agility (and other dog sports), Cindy has taken in, fostered and found homes for many herding breeds or herding breed crosses.

**UPDATE - ADOPTION IN PROGRESS**

We've received 3 inquiries about adopting Boomer. We will process them in the order received but it is the best match that will get the final approval.

Meet BOOMER!

Yes, you are correct to take a 2nd look - he is NOT a herding breed. LOL! Boomer is a 4 year old, neutered German Shorthaired Pointer (unregistered). He is a well mannered, very active, typical GSP (so I am told - I am more of a herding person, remember) looking for a new family to spend outdoor and couch time with.

He grew up around 2 young over active boys & is much loved by them and their mom. Through no fault of his own, he finds himself a statistic of this economy where finding pet friendly housing is hard to come by. We took him in as they desperately had to find him a place by last Tuesday, when the new owners took possession of the family home.

He takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people but he is quite affectionate once he does (he's only been here a couple of days & so far, the easiest dog to live with). He responds to his name really well. He's good around other dogs, great in the house, crate trained and so far, a lovely house guest.

He is currently on a low dose of phenobarbitol once/day for a movement disorder that makes it look like his head is nodding 'yes'. He has had lots of testing from blood work to seeing a neurologist and getting two MRIs. They determined that it is not progressive and although there is always the minor risk of him having a full seizure it is unlikely to happen as he has never shown any signs other than this.

We have reached out to Pointer Rescue of Canada & just waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, we thought we'd share his info in the hopes we find him a more suitable home than a gaggle of border collies, kelpies, cattle dogs, etc, etc.

Please feel free to share & interested parties can contact me at [email protected]

Although our goal is to find homes for the dogs in our care, we don't want just any home for them. Hence our questionnaire, required references & a home visit to ensure we're placing the dog in the best matched home for that dog.

DON’T GET A DOG…UNLESS YOU CAN MAKE A COMMITMENT

In an ideal world dogs would be included as a family member and we would commit to sharing our time and life with them in the relatively short time they have on earth.

In an ideal world, we would take the time to learn about how dogs communicate through their body language, their emotions, their needs and keep learning about updated, modern, force free / pain free methods to understand or modify behaviour.

In reality, dogs are so often seen as an item of property, an object, a commodity to be bred and make money from, a cheap, replaceable security system, a garden decoration, a toy to play with when the kids are bored or an accessory that looks good while out walking, running or taking selfies.

Dogs are not objects, just like us they are sentient beings with the capacity to feel a range of emotions.

Dogs are naturally social beings and need to spend time with their human family.

A life spent confined to a backyard or fenced in with little or no human companionship is not a life.

They need love and attention, exercise and mental stimulation. They need routine, consistency and predictable patterns to feel safe and secure in our world.

Having a dog requires commitment, understanding, patience and dedication.

It’s hard work, it’s sometimes messy, dirty and stinky, it costs money and requires changes to our lifestyle.

It’s a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly or without making a long term commitment, but the rewards of forming a secure bond with another sentient being can bring so much joy and enrichment to both our lives and theirs.

A massive thank you to our friends & supporters for contributing to the dogfood drive organized by Paula Collins. The last batch of 81 bags managed to last 3 months so, hopefully, these 74 bags (plus some cookies & boxes of samples) should be able to stretch our food budget another 3 months.

Thanks also to Calgary Agility Association for their contribution of 10 bags from their recent raffle table proceeds as well as Marianne Jorgensen's muscles to help load them.

Thanks also to Ellen Jamieson for help with loading & for picking up Ghost to take him in for his groom at Launder-A-Pet yesterday.

Merry Christmas!

& click on their picture for more detailed info on their personality & their quirks. The dogs in the "Hold" section are still adoptable but they may have just come in or are waiting for their vet appointments.

Not sure why, but Facebook does not let us know about notifications or comments made on individual pictures/posts so we often do not see them until long after they were made.

Please email: [email protected] for an application if one of our dogs sounds like a match for you & your lifestyle.

Hee hee!
Maybe a tad over the top but.....

I am really starting to hate Facebook. They removed our post about Hailey looking for her new home because we go against their community standards - "Thou shall not sell Animals". There is nothing in that post saying she is for sale. It does not even mention adoption fees.

How the hedoublehockeysticks are rescues & shelters supposed to promote the dogs needing new homes & are up for adoption if we can't post them to our social media pages?

Have a great day! ❤️🐾
