Interesting information from our friends International Cat Care
🐱 You’ve probably seen adverts like this on social media, and you may have been tempted, especially around the holiday season. But we’re asking you to think twice before buying a cat from social media. 🤔
Although many social media sites have rules around pet sales, these may vary and there is little moderation, making it difficult to protect both animals and buyers against sellers who prioritise profit over an animal's health and welfare.
Along with other animal welfare organisations, trade associations, local authority representatives and veterinary bodies that are part of Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG), we’re urging people to not buy any pets through social media, and we are calling on social media companies to do more to protect animal welfare.
Research by the group has even found that 89% of social media adverts reviewed breached the sites’ own rules for pet sales and 19% were flagged by reviewers as being a suspected scam! ⚠️ Common scams include coercing buyers into paying a deposit for a pet that doesn’t exist, or sellers lying about the health of animal.
