It was great to learn from each and everyone of these legendary and upcoming horsemen. Although I respected each clinician, I truly did come to cheer our Canadians. I enjoyed my time with other people who share the same passion and love ❤️ for the horses. I look forward to this year of teaching and inspiring all riders regardless of age or discipline in a safe and controlled environment.

Beautiful BC Canada.

How do horses survive the extreme cold? Great question!

1.Fresh Water: Horses need just as much water in winter as they do in the summer. I Provide lots of fresh clean water. Horses need water especially in the winter to help move forage through their delicate digestive system.

2. Extra Hay and feed
I provide extra hay and feed. Eating their “fuel” creates heat. Think of a furnace. So extra hay cold days. Lots of fresh water!

3. No blanket.
As day light shortens, this triggers the brain to grow a winter coat. The winter coat hairs stand up, trapping tiny air pockets between them. The effect is like that of a thick, down-filled comforter, with tremendous insulating quality.
Fact is the more snow you see on your horse’s body, you know their natural coat is doing it’s job. So no blankets , unless it is a horse that is struggling with weight or is older then I will bring in and give extra blankets.

4. Shelter, either natural or human built. We have both. But horses are very intelligent on survival. They will survive given the right environment. The will seek shelter in the trees and in valleys or gully

5. And finally big pastures to walk in. When they are moving they are warming up their bodies. Just Like humans when we get cold if we start to walk, jog even on the spot we start to warm up.

Of course hauling out 300 ft of hose to fill water buckets…well that is another story! I guess I never said it my job was easy , but I sure love it. 💕🥶

Memories are such fragile things! When I found the attached photo of my Grandfather’s Bennet Wagon all tangled up in Page Wire – a whirl wind of emotions flooded my mind.

It brought back memories of when I was a little boy spending as much time as I could sitting right beside my Grampa on this now broken-down and weathered buggy.

Looking back on my youth, I realize it’s the environment we grow-up in, along with the first steps we take in life that shapes and inspires us to become who we are.

The road I travelled down has always been a work in progress.
A never-ending journey of striving to be the best horseman I can be.

A Short Story:
Accepting a Snaffle Bit and Head Stall - “Peacefully”!
This Stud C**t started out with a completely different idea about accepting such nonsense, so I relied on my many years of Understanding and Experience to change his point of view.

My program is based on forming respectful relationships, keeping the horse in a thinking frame of mind and gaining control of the feet.

The Four Principles of Training I used to achieve Success were: 1. Refined Leadership Skills 2. Effective Communication 3. Meeting my Horse’s Needs 4. Using a Confidence Building Approach.

This coming Spring, Summer and Fall of 2024 I will be offering Work Shops, Clinics and Camps here at Highland House Ranch in Logan Lake BC.

Mark your calendars. We are excited to have Jay O’Jay doing clinics this year! If this is something you would like to do but perhaps your horse isn’t ready or you don’t have a trailer? Don’t worry we have school horses! Looking forward to a summer of learning with Jay O' Jay Horsemanship!!

Happy New Year 2024

“Finding My Way Back” to what I do best will be the road I travel, not only for 2024 but for many more years to come.

After a number of years working in conjunction with UBC developing an equine program to help our Veterans and First Responders deal with the symptoms of PTSD, I can honestly say the journey has been extremely rewarding.

Witnessing the positive changes that horses can truly make in people’s lives goes far beyond moving and I will hold onto those heartfelt memories forever.

While I feel thankful for having the opportunity to work on the success of this program, there comes a time to move on and share my experiences and knowledge with other horse enthusiast wanting to learn more.

So, What’s Next: This coming Spring, Summer and Fall of 2024 I will be offering Work Shops, Clinics and Camps here at Highland House Ranch in Logan Lake BC.
In addition, I will be accepting a limited amount of outside Clinic dates where I travel to your location. More details to follow shortly.

With our herd recently expanding, we thought that over the next little while, would reintroduce our lesson horses and new addition! ✨

“Zena” is a grade grulla tobiano paint mare. With Zena being grade, our best guess is that she was born around 2000, making her close to 23 years old.

Zena had been a part of our program since 2015, and has taught many green/ timid riders since having her- she is quiet and friendly, making her great at her job, before we recently retired her. Zena is famously known amongst the lesson kids for her penetrating “stink eye” 👀 (but don’t worry, she doesn’t mean anything by it.)

Some of of Zena’s favourite things to do include:

⭐️ Being groomed by kids

⭐️Hanging out with her best buddy, Jessie,

⭐️and eating her bran mash. 🥣

For the winter, Zena is spending her time on Vancouver Island with a close friend of mine! while we miss her terribly, she is enjoying her vacation being loved on and staying warm on the coast.. ☀️

Be sure to keep an eye on our daily horse introduction posts to become more familiar with the Jill Malanka Horsemanship herd. 🤩💛
