To any York Region followers who may be thinking of hitting Roches Point, Georgina. It’s early for algae blooms, but with the high temps we’ve had recently, and continue to have, you need to check before allowing your dogs (and you) in any body of water.
Blue green algae is a killer !! 😳🐾

York Region is cautioning users of Roches Point Pier in Town of Georgina about a confirmed blue-green algae bloom in the lake water. Human exposure to toxins in blue-green algae may cause illness. Animal exposure can be lethal.

It’s going to be another weekend of non-stop “fun” for some of our pets 😩 In my area it will probably be Fri, Sat, Sun, & Mon nights 😢
PLEASE make sure that you have done whatever might be necessary to help make your pets feel safe and secure, such as a thundershirt, calming music, loud TV, or medication. Make sure that they are wearing up to date identification (preferably a Wagz Wear ID Collar 😉) that they are out early to do their business on leash, and that doors and windows are closed and locked to prevent a panicked escape.

I am not one to tell clients and followers what to give or not give their pups in the way of preventative medications.
I will however, try to spread as much information as possible in order for people to make their own, well informed decisions. It appears that Heartworm is becoming more prevalent in our geographical location, so please, make sure that you are having discussions with your vet to cover appropriate timing and the available options. 💜🐾
(this is a bit of a longer read, but worthwhile to have a look at the attached article as well)
FYI - this is the rescue where I got Zora

On our adoption application we ask "What is your plan for heartworm prevention?". Some people leave it blank, some people say "none", some people give an answer that indicates that they don't understand it, some people can go on for sentences, with what they do. Any reputable rescue will be non-negotiable on this topic. Some rescues are very straight-forward and accept traditional medicines only. Some rescues realize there may be a holistic approach instead (which is fine...it just takes a LOT more planning - more money, more time, more diligence). For any DIBS dogs, there needs to be a plan in place. Non-negotiable.
This week has been a bit weird on that topic, as we have an applicant that doesn't love traditional meds, but had no awareness of the complications involved in formulating a plan (she has since spent hours researching, educating and no doubt having many "holy s**t" moments as she learned more about this illness.)

Then, last night, we received an email from another past adopter (2020) and their dog just tested positive for heartworm. We wanted to share part of their email.

"At the end of March we went in for a routine check up and were looking to start her back on her yearly prescription of flea/ tick/ heartworm prevention. Prior to starting the prescription the vet always runs a blood test to make sure she is cleared. To the vet’s and to our surprise her test came back positive for heartworm.

Today she underwent the beginning of her first round of treatment. It was a successful day, however the next 30 days she is considered high risk and is bedridden. Heartworm treatment is not easy on a dog and we are sad she will have to go through this. The vet is optimistic that Autumn will get through this.

We wanted to bring this to your attention as we have found out that there has been a big spike in cases from last year. Our vet clinic (located in the High Park area of Toronto) has only experienced 1 case in the last 45+ years it’s been open. This year alone they have 6 active cases. We thought, as you have a good following, you may want to bring awareness."

With regards to heartworm, it is something that can snowball from one infected dog. Historically we have associated it with states like Texas or Florida, in Ontario we associate it with areas around reserves. But the reality is, it is everywhere. It's not based on climate, or cleanliness, or good food, or overall health - it is transmitted by our everyday mosquitoes, and really, it's everywhere.
With applicants, we may hear "Oh, my vet said we don't need it", but 100% of the time when we follow up with the vet (because we always do that), the vet 100% of the time states "we do promote it to all of our clients: they have opted out". We have yet to have a vet say that they do not suggest it to dogs in their care.
