We stopped praying our lawns years ago, but I never thought to feed them to our pups! Interesting article! ❤️

According to nutritionists, dandelions🌼 are one of the top five MOST nutritious plants in the world, beating out broccoli🥦, spinach🍃, and carrots🥕! This superfood is full of prebiotic fiber that’s good for the gut and polyphenols that cleanse the liver, prevent inflammation, and helps manage chronic diseases like diabetes. Dandelions🌼 are also a powerful topical agent for wounds or dry, cracked paws🐾. All parts of the dandelion are edible! Let your dog loose in a dandelion-filled spring lawn—as long as it’s free of pesticides⚠️ and other lawn chemicals—or buy dandelion greens from your grocery store or farmers’ market.

COMMENT “GREENS” and we’ll message you FEEDING DOSAGES🥄 along with the link to our new book where we show you how to use every part of this plant and packed it into many of our recipes including: DIY VITAMIN/MINERAL POWDER, teas, plus how to make your own DANDELION OIL💧 & SALVE to use on hot spots, cracked noses, clean your pet’s ears and much more!

We hear so much about bananas being a healthy snack in their own or in baked treats for our dogs (even for ourselves!).

Here is a great guide which you can follow when planning to use banana’s as a snack or treat, considering the lower sugar, higher fibre options as the healthier version. ❤️ 🍌 🐶

Green bananas🍌 can prevent and reduce cancers by over 60%, according to the American Association of Cancer Research, so maybe stop hunting for those yellow bananas in the supermarket!

You can boost your dog’s immune and gut health with unripe, green bananas, which have less sugar and more fiber than in their ripened state. Research shows that green bananas offer:

🍌Pectin and prebiotics to build the microbiome and increase the production of butyrate and other short-chain fatty acids

🍌Leucocyanidin, a flavonoid that may help to prevent GI ulcers by inhibiting the release of histamine in the gut

🍌Resistant starch (non-digestible) fiber that helps to prevent intestinal disease, increase mineral absorption and B vitamin synthesis, control blood sugar, improve immune response, and may even prevent intestinal cancer

🐶Need a treat for a dog with a sensitive stomach?

Quartered slices of green banana are a perfect training treat, whether your dog is prone to diarrhea or not. Suggested amounts, chopped into bite sized pieces:

Giant breeds: 1 green banana a day
Medium to large breeds: ½ green banana a day
Small breeds: ¼ green banana a day

In Chapter 3 titled TREATS and TOPPERS of The Forever Dog LIFE, we’ll give you a rainbow 🌈 of options to treat your dog to better health including recipes that use bananas in a creative way and baking options like green banana flour that is a low glycemic healthier alternative to plain white flour!

But this also relates to us (humans), and our health and well being, especially with fighting cancer.

My new KitchenAid food chopper will come in super handy for this - try adding or topping salads with and boost your (and your dogs) immune and cancer fighting powers.

Food is medicine no doubt!! ❤️ 🥦 ❤️

Today’s Forever Dog LIFE Longevity Tip🐾⏳

Add some apiaceous vegetables (e.g., carrots🥕, cilantro🌿, parsnips, fennel, celery, parsley🌱) to your pet’s dry or canned food!

These gems contain polyacetylenes, an unusual class of organic compounds that has antibacterial🧫 AND anti-fungal benefits. They play a key role in detoxifying several cancer-causing substances, specifically MYCOTOXINS🦠. Mycotoxins are tasteless, odorless fungal toxins found in pet food ingredients that cause organ damage and immune problems.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of more than 130 pet deaths and more than 220 pet illnesses over the last couple years that may be linked to pets eating brands of pet food tainted with this mold.

Eliminating mycotoxins from your dog’s body can be really difficult but serving up apiaceous veggies is a great way to enhance the metabolism of these toxic compounds!

Raw or cooked, carrots🥕 and parsnip slices🔪 make great training treats, while cilantro, parsley, and fennel can be minced and mixed in with your dog’s food.

This easy food hack is one of many simple strategies in our upcoming food guide book, released this spring. You can find more info or pre-order today here - www.ForeverDogLife.com

*At this time there are no official recalls for these brands yet.

If you believe ANY BRAND of pet food is causing or has caused illness or death:
Stop the food immediately.
Report it to the FDA: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/report-problem/how-report-pet-food-complaint
Contact your veterinarian. Request a copy of your pet's medical records. Report your concerns to the pet food company and ask your vet to do the same.
PLEASE COMPLETE THIS SURVEY https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S8SMQGD

This began with a significant rise in consumer reports of sick pets eating Purina pet food. We are now seeing the same alarming symptoms across different brands of pet food. This has happened previously when there was contamination at the supplier level - multiple brands purchased the same contaminated material.

SAVE THE PET FOOD. Do NOT agree to send the pet food company the food. If you feel compelled to do so, only send a small portion. Keep the rest of the food in the freezer in original packaging. Do NOT send the medical records to the pet food company. Document your conversation with the pet food company.

The pet food company may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Eventually, if there is a class action lawsuit you will be unable to join if you do this or if you want to file your own lawsuit.

The Facebook Group 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' is a group of volunteers working tirelessly to help pets impacted by this. It is not our group, but it is the best resource we can offer at this time. Please have patience with these unpaid volunteers doing their best to keep up with the influx of concerned pet parents.

Samples have been sent to an independent laboratory for testing. We do not have additional information on specific contaminants at this time.

Just like us, our pups thrive off of a variety of nutrient dense foods, helping boost their immune system, fight disease and increase energy levels. But it’s also helpful to know which foods are safe to give them. In this case, which fruit.

A helpful read on how you can boost the health of your furry friend. ❤️ 🐶 ❤️

Have you ever caught yourself munching on a delicious mango and thought, 'Can I share this with my dog?' 🐶🥭 (short answer - YES, but remove the pits!)

Here is a blog with a complete list of dog-friendly fruits and and also those to steer clear from 🍇🚫

Check it out here:

PS- Ideally, feed fruit separately from your dogs' raw meat bowl to avoid any funky fermentation.🍷😉🐶

We go on with our lives so easily, so often, like it’s the only one that matters. Let’s show them theirs matter too.

Please share. If there is something you’d like to do that is good today, sharing would be it. ❤️🐶💔

We are gutted.
Nate has been returned.
We have made the decision to close for dog intakes for the foreseeable future. This is not what we want to do. It's what we have to do, in order to keep going at all in rescue.

Haven is a dog nobody wants.
Nate is a dog nobody wants.
Papa John even has zero interest.
And the 4 puppies are lovely and a lot of work.
On top of dogs, we also are overwhelmed with cats, and are turning away multiple surrender requests daily.

We are run down. We're disappointed, we're frustrated, we're angry, and we're stressed out and burning out. Rescue is not for the weak. The highs and lows give you whiplash.

Nate and Haven are now sanctuary dogs under the rescue. They are still looking for forever homes, but we will not give up on them. They both deserve better and we will give it to them until the right person comes along, if ever.

What can you do?
- Please share any posts of adoptable animals
- Please consider a monthly donation
to help with the costs of quality care. Any amount helps! We put our heart and souls into these discarded animals, pretty much 24/7 and while I hate complaining, something needs to change in Ontario's animal welfare system. How does the government have zero funding for charities like ours? How are we supposed to do this alone?
I know we're not alone, we have some absolutely incredible supporters and the community is always there when we need help 🙏
Still, we are drowning. 50+ messages daily, most of which are surrender requests for pets that are being given up on for various reasons.

If you think you may be a good match for any of the wonderful cats or dogs in our care, please message us.

Please no negative comments toward Nate's attempted adopters, they feel awful too 😞

Find the right way to show your dog affection. That they understand. ❤️ 🐶

POOCHES DON’T LIKE SMOOCHES!

Should we be hugging and kissing our dogs because it shows our dogs just how much we love them?

After all it’s how we as people show our love, affection and provide comfort to one another.

But dogs are not people and we can’t just assume that they enjoy this or understand what we are trying to communicate.

But my dog enjoys being hugged and kissed! Yes, there may be some dogs that do, or some dogs that have learnt over time to tolerate this invasion of their personal space because they have learnt there is no escape. They are trapped, confined, immobilised and helpless.

The majority of pictures of people hugging or kissing dogs clearly show many signs of stressed body language.

It’s so important to be aware of how our dogs are feeling by learning basic body language. It’s the way our dogs communicate and we owe it to them to understand their language.

Respect a dog’s personal space. Provide a choice. Seek consent. This is what builds relationship and trust.

Save your smooches for the people in your life that enjoy them!

Grief is a universal language. And we all deal with it differently. There is no right or wrong. But sometimes dealing with it also means reaching out for help or just connecting with others; sadness and coping can often feel overwhelming and lonely.

I lost my best friend one year ago. His name was Kobo. You’ve likely seen him in posts I’ve shared. It was unexpected. Unprepared is an understatement - emotionally, mentally….physically. It was the most challenging time I’d yet have to face in my life, the feeling of loss gains an entire new meaning. And there is nothing you can do but face it. Everyday. Even if you don’t want to. I always say, I still miss him just as much, it’s just different now. Which, can also be scary knowing life moves on, regardless.

Sometimes knowing others have shared this darkness can help bring light and healing. Even with tears. Helping you move through the emotions, without the guilt of feeling you are letting go.

If you are going throw a loss right now, perhaps give the interview a listen, and know you are not alone. Because, it was never “just a dog” in my case. It was a soul that brought meaning to life. Something you will cherish and value forever.

Coping and Healing Through Pet Loss 💛🐾

Erica Messer, our latest Pet Game Changer, lost her beloved cat Wolfgang and had no idea, at first, how to navigate the grief.

The first thing that helped her in her healing journey was writing a love letter to her cat, telling him all the things she loved about him. 💌 Her journey through grief helped her create the website Wolfie’s Wish, a place to share to other pet parents who are mourning the loss of their own animal companions what worked for her while she was experiencing the similar situation. 💗

22/07/2023

Even though I feed my dogs a high quality raw blend, as a nutritionist I make sure to add a variety of nutrient, antioxidant rich foods to maintain optimum health. Just like us, their system requires support to thrive.

Whether feeding kibble or raw, below is a quick list of just a few key superfoods that can support your dogs immune system, gut health (skin and coat) and disease fighting power, helping them not only survive, but thrive. Because thriving means a longer and healthier life with you! (Not to mention less visits to the vet)❤️🐾❤️

Try rotating the below into their diet throughout the week, boosting the nutrition content of their meals. PS - they are all good for you too!

⭐️ sweet potato - rich in fibre and beta carotene, sweet potato added to meals is a nutrient dense super food promoting skin and eye health, as well known to provide protection against heart disease and certain types of cancer. Best plain, steamed or boiled added to daily meals

⭐️chlorella/spirulina powder - high in chlorophyll, this super detoxifier helps remove heavy metals from the body, neutralize toxins and cleanse the blood. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, this immune boosting green/blue algae is safe to be given daily to support over all health

⭐️ chia seeds - a superfood on its own being a complete plant protein, rich in antioxidants, omega fats and fibre - a small amount goes a long way. You can combine chia seeds with water and refrigerate weekly making them more absorbable when adding to meals. 1/2 tsp - 1 tsp of the chia / water gel is all you need (depending on dog size).

⭐️ quail eggs - rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and amino acids, this whole food supports overall muscle, joint and bone health as well as brain health being rich in choline.

⭐️ broccoli - filled with immune and disease fighting antioxidants, gut supporting fibre and anti-inflammatory compounds, a small amount goes a long way. Tip - steam the stems instead of throwing away and add to their food 2x a week

⭐️ blueberries - power packed with vit c and antioxidants supporting immune function and photochemicals which can help protect cells from cancer growth - not to mention a great source of fibre (keeping things moving). A great anti inflammatory snack or meal topper (try mashing prior if you have a fast eater)

⭐️ sardines - source of omega 3 fatty acids which can benefit heart, brain, skin and coat health

⭐️ raw/fermented goat milk - supports gut health containing probiotics and naturally occurring enzymes. Goat milk is easy to digest and helps promote a healthy gut environment by improving nutrient absorption, immune function, and aiding in the elimination of toxins, all of which can reduce inflammation and allergy symptoms.

Cheers to a happy and healthy

Not all animals are in cages at shelters. Some are in homes already and still need your help. Often times the home environment isn’t a healthy or safe fit for the animal or family, and it can be a very hard and emotional decision to make. Even after trying to find a solution.

Sometimes just sharing can help an animal find a home even when you can’t take them in yourself. Please share. Everyone and everything deserves a second chance. 💞💞💞

04/07/2023

They never asked for any of this. 💔

And yet, once again humans have failed them.

Without ever understanding why, they will unwillingly be left behind and have to say goodbye to this world. Sadly, by the ones who tried for so long and fought so hard to save them.

This is why we don’t need more dogs bred. We need to save the ones that deserved a life and to be loved just as much, but were failed. They are special. Because you make them special when you choose them.

It’s not easy to take in a rescue. It is A LOT of work and dedication to training, patience, and trust - that the process will work, in time. Environment is so important, as is understanding.

If you are someone today that has space in your home and life, along with experience, maybe it’s your time to step up and save a soul.

I took Bo in 8 months ago. He was given no chance, no training, no understanding. The reward in my heart is greater than any. Trust me on that. Seeing him grow, learn to trust, learn to love, and more than anything, the gratitude that I know he feels in his heart, daily, warms mine with purpose. 💞

Please share. Time is on no ones side. 💔 🐶

BEHAVIOURAL EUTHANASIA

It's Taboo. No one likes to talk about it. Those who have to make that choice are vilified, harassed, and threatened. Those of us in rescue, whether behaviourally focused or not, will face the choice at some point. And we will receive hate, scorn and criticism like no other. It causes many, many rescuers to burn out, close down, or worse.

Absolutely NO rescuer gets into volunteering to say goodbye. We want a happy ending for every dog, to find their perfect match, and safe place. We agonize over it, loose sleep, cry endlessly, praying everyday, that that unicorn adoption application comes in, and says; 'they're the one for me, I'm ready and committed to meeting their needs, and taking them home'. But often that email doesn't come. No applications get filled. Dogs are forgotten, and unwanted. Until of course it comes time to "save them" from the evil rescue who's been fighting for them all along.

I have 3 wonderful dogs, that I have been pushing HARD for the last 6 months, because they are declining. I absolutely will NOT ignore a dogs mental health and wellbeing. They have been looking for their forever homes for 2-3+ years. Unwanted, ignored, and forgotten. However, I am not ignoring them, and I will not put off a decision that was a long time coming, any further. It is decision week for these 3 angels. And I will love and spoil them until that final moment.

If you were planning on applying, the time is NOW. Not tomorrow, or the day after, TODAY. Don't waste my time, don't pretend, and then back out. And don't try and force a dog, whose needs you cannot meet, into a home not meant for them. There are HUNDREDS of dogs in need, and not enough homes. Countless dogs are dying across Ontario, and Canada, because there simply aren't enough homes.

As a behavioural rescue, and a person who gives everything to her dogs, I will give them the gift of peace. My mandate has always been; dogs that are safe for adoption go up for adoption. Dogs that can't go up for adoption, but are safe for me to handle, stay with me for as long as I can give them. Dogs that aren't safe for me to handle, or I cannot keep safe, I say goodbye to with the dignity, and respect they deserve. That includes keeping them safe from their own demons. This will not be the first decision I have to make during these final ~8 weeks. I am now dying, and facing a major surgery, that I may not survive. My time is extremely finite. I have put it off, to give more time, to find those homes, so I don't have to make this decision, but I cannot no longer. My mission is to keep the public safe, and my dogs safe, and that includes from themselves.

These decisions will cause people to stop following, and supporting. They always do. And it hurts every time. But it is a huge responsibility to work with behavioural dogs, and I take it very seriously. My dedication, is to the dogs first.

If you are 100% ready to adopt, profiles can always be found here: https://www.adoptapet.com/shelter/188136/available-pets For every face you see, there are at least 50 more waiting for a chance that may never come. Every behavioural rescue is stuffed with similar dogs in need. If you can offer a unicorn home, today is the day to adopt.

Comments will be monitored. I will tolerate no hate or disrespect to these angels. If you can offer a home 100% to a dog in need, then message the page with your email ASAP. Dogs are placed by best match based on lifestyle and needs, never by appearance. Putting a dog in an unsuitable situation, or again in limbo, is not a solution. They need a permanent, forever home, that can meet their needs, and they need it today.

To those that have walked in my shoes, and been there to support me through my rescue journey, thank you. I appreciate you more than words can express. Let's hope that a miracle happens today ❤️

Choking in animals or humans can be a very scary situation. Not only for the person choking, but for the person witnessing it as well. Although never something you want to prepare for, being prepared can help save a life. Especially, when your dog can’t physically tell you. ❤️🐶❤️

❤️An additional video posted in the comments of how to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre. ❤️

What to Do if Your Dog Starts Choking ‼️🐶

Aside from avoiding the common choking hazards, knowing what to do if your dog is choking can save their life. Here are 6 important steps:

1. Remain calm and act swiftly
2. Check your dog’s mouth for a foreign object
3. If you can see and access the object without getting injured, remove it
4. For large objects, place your thumbs under the jaw, near the base of the throat, and push forward to dislodge the foreign body
5. If that doesn’t work, perform the Heimlich maneuver (visit link below to learn how)
6. After a choking episode, seek veterinary care

Learn how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on dogs in today’s free pet blog post (linked below).

Dogs Can Decipher Our Intent 🐶👀

A 2021 study suggests that dogs can tell the difference between intentional and accidental human behavior, which has been backed up by a recent study. In the new study, 48 pet dogs showed through their behavior and body language that they instinctively understood the intentions of a “clumsy” human vs. a human who was deliberately messing with them.
