Please spay and neuter your cats. So many adult cats needing homes.

Let’s talk about male cat reproductive anatomy and cat 🏀🏀. Did you know a male cat can still reproduce for up to 6 weeks after a neuter? Its true! Even though the actual testicles that make s***m are gone, a cat can still have residual s***m inside its tubes waiting to impregnate a female much like a human male. Eventually the s***m will either have been ‘used’ or will die off in the tubes and the cats will be sterile. It will also take several weeks for the testosterone to leave its body and for the urine smell to improve. Additionally, even after a neuter, it may still appear as though your cat still has testicles inside the sc***um if the testicles had become large. A gentle touch to the sc***um will reveal an empty sac.

Also, a not-so-fun fact, is intact cats have barbs on their pen*ses which helps them anchor inside the female during mating. Hence, the screaming that goes on. The barbs scraping also stimulate the female to drop eggs. A male cat loses the barbs a few weeks after a neuter. These barbs are a helpful visual to let your vet know if a cat is neutered or is cryptorchid. This condition happens when the testicles did not drop and the vet will have to go into their abdomen to remove the testicles. If the sac is empty, the vet vet will check for those barbs. No barbs means the cat is fixed. If the cat has barbs and an empty sac the cat is cryptorchid.

Neutering a male will prevent testicular cancer and help you have a healthy relaxed and happy cat. Far too often cats are thrown outside when they reach sexual maturity and start smelling foul or spraying your home. A simple solution is neutering by 4 months. A neuter prevents so many problems including shelter overcrowding. We spay and neuter at 2months/2 pounds or as soon as we can get our paws on them if they are older than 2 months.

Please get your male cats neutered!! It’s a miserable life staying beat-up and injured from fighting … not to mention breeding constantly and adding to overpopulation.

Meet Brave Button!

Button is a blind, warmhearted and sweet older gentlemen Bengal, who has captured our hearts with his unwavering sweetness and gentle nature despite facing significant challenges. This sweet boy came into our care initially as a stray, facing some nights alone outdoors. He arrived with wounds and scratches covering his whole backside, but even amidst the pain and multiple vet visits, Button remained his affectionate self. He consistently sought comfort and companionship, eagerly pressing into hands for pets and laps to curl up on.

Button required extensive medical attention. He underwent treatment for infections and underwent hernia repair and is recovering right now from dental surgery. Despite the hardships he endured, Button's loving nature never wavered. His vocal nature, typical of Bengals, became even more pronounced as he relies on his meows to navigate his surroundings and communicate with his humans. He uses his voice to understand where he is and locate his beloved humans, and a few quick pets serve as reassurance in his world of darkness.

Despite his blindness, Button adapts remarkably well to new environments. With time, he learns the layout of his surroundings, bumping into fewer walls as he becomes more familiar with his space. However, Button thrives best in a serene environment, free from the hustle and bustle of young children. He requires a patient and understanding home where he can live out his days in comfort and security.

Come in to meet Button today 1-4pm or apply online adopt.spca.bc.ca

A new chapter

As I sit and reflect on the last 20yrs of pet sitting I have met many wonderfull animals that are cared for by loving pet owners. I realize there is a need for reliable and trustworthy pet sitters so this decision to scale down on my business did not come lightly. I will be keeping a small group of my pet clients as they have become part of my family. I have also realized that many cats are treated as disposable and not given the respect that they deserve. I am happy to say that my focus is helping as many shy and scared kitties become socialized so that they can find forever homes. I am happy and proud to be a foster mom for the local SPCA now.
