The Avery Foundation The Avery Foundation is a volunteer-run and foster-based animal rescue in Ottawa, ON.

Founded in November 2013, The Avery Foundation is a foster-based animal rescue that is entirely run by a small dedicated group of coordinators with the help of many volunteers. Our mission is to help abandoned and vulnerable animals through foster care, rehabilitation, and adoption; to guide potential adopters in finding the best fit for their family; and to promote responsible pet ownership throu

gh humane education: specifically of the importance of routine veterinary care, spay/neutering and enrichment - ultimately creating a happy and healthy life for as many animals as possible. We host events and fundraises to help with costs associated with vetting, domesticating, feeding and housing our rescues.

Recently, we saw posts from our friend Jackie at Speak Up for Paws about a colony of cats living at a campground in Alfred. Seeing them struggling in the cold broke our hearts, so we reached out and offered to take in two cats from the colony.

Last week, we welcomed the first of them. She was trapped on Tuesday, and by Wednesday she had received her initial veterinary care – spay, FVRCP vaccine, microchip, deworming, and medication to treat her eyes. That first visit alone came to $430.38.

This is what our outstanding veterinary balance represents: real second chances for cats in need. And while we always do our best to step in when we can, the reality is that our current veterinary balance of over $6,900 is limiting our ability to help more cats like her.

That’s why we launched our Feline the Love 50/50 Fundraiser ❤️

By entering, you’re helping us pay down our vet balance so we can continue stepping up for cats like this girl – and the many others who will need help next.

To enter the 50/50, donate $10 for one entry or $25 for three entries. Half of all funds raised will go directly toward our veterinary balance, and the other half will be awarded to one lucky winner!

Donations can be made via e-transfer to [email protected]. Please include “50/50” in the comment section. Entries will be accepted until Tuesday, February 10th at 11:59 PM, and the winner will be drawn on Wednesday, February 11th.

All donors’ first names and last initials will be added to our tracking sheet here:

Things move fast in rescue, and some weeks can feel especially overwhelming.

Last weekend, we saw posts from our friend Jackie at Speak Up for Paws about a colony of cats living at a campground in Alfred. Seeing them struggling in the cold broke our hearts. With an adoption on the horizon, we reached out and offered to take in one to two cats as part of a multi-rescue effort to help the colony.

Shortly after committing to this, we were hit with unexpected and costly news at Ren’s annual exam and routine urinalysis follow-up (required every three months after his urate stone removal last April). While his urine results were mostly stable, a possible gallop rhythm was detected. Ren will return to the clinic next month for a recheck and may require an echocardiogram to further assess his heart.

That same evening, we heard from Potter’s foster that she had experienced multiple vomiting episodes and couldn’t keep food down. Out of an abundance of caution, she was brought to the clinic for an exam and X-rays. The results were inconclusive and could indicate either gas or a possible obstruction. Potter was recently switched to a high-fibre satiety diet, which can cause gas, so we’re hopeful that’s the cause. She received fluids and anti-nausea medication and is being closely monitored. Thankfully, she has since eaten and kept her food down, and we’ll continue following veterinary guidance.

This is the reality of rescue – balancing urgent medical needs, unexpected expenses, and the commitment to keep saying yes when animals need help. It isn’t always easy, and weeks like this stretch us thin.

If you’re in a position to help support the cats in our care, we would be deeply grateful. Donations can be made via e-transfer to: [email protected]

Right now, our outstanding balance at our affiliate veterinary clinic is just over $6,500. We’ve been trying to pay it down for quite some time, but between costly ongoing care for several high-needs cats, higher-than-usual food costs (many of our cats require specialty diets), and slower adoptions, we’ve been falling behind.

We’ve been doing our best to fundraise, but as a small, volunteer-run team, we haven’t been able to close the gap – and it’s weighing heavily on us.

We desperately want to continue helping cats in need, especially with the cold weather and kitten season right around the corner. But to do that responsibly, we need to pay down – or ideally pay off – our veterinary balance.

That’s why we’re launching our Feline the Love 50/50 Fundraiser. ❤️

To enter the 50/50, donate $10 for one entry or $25 for three entries. Half of all funds raised will go directly toward our veterinary balance, and the other half will be awarded to one lucky winner!

Every entry helps us get closer to clearing this balance and continuing our work. Thank you for your support. 🐾

We’re so grateful to our friends at Pet Valu Innes for their willingness to host us – and even more so for their flexibility in rescheduling our fundraiser to a warmer day.

With bitterly cold temperatures forecasted for Saturday, we know that shoppers and supporters would be much more comfortable – and likely out and about – on a slightly milder day.

Because of that, this weekend’s event has been postponed to a future date, and we’ll share the new details as soon as they’re confirmed.

Stay tuned – we can’t wait to see you and thank you for your support!

January 22nd is ! 🐱💬

To celebrate, we’re sharing some adorable photos of our adoptable pair, Dash and Camy – along with the burning questions they’d definitely be asking their foster. Because let’s be honest… cats have a lot to say!

What’s your cat wondering about? Comment below and let us know! And if you’re interested in adopting one of our inquisitive felines, check out our website: https://www.theaveryfoundation.ca/adoption/cats/ to learn more about our adoptable cats.

Theodore has been in our care for just shy of two months, and we’re happy to share that he continues to make steady progress. While he’s still cautious, he’s grown much more comfortable in his foster home and is now content sitting out in the open when his foster is nearby. Even more encouraging, he’s begun taking treats from them.

He’s still unsure about quick movements and isn’t quite ready for pets yet, so everything is happening at Theodore’s pace. With time, consistency, and patience, we’re slowly feeling more confident that he’ll be able to be adopted into the right home.

Theodore would truly thrive in a home with another cat and would benefit greatly from a confident, friendly feline companion to help show him that humans aren’t so bad after all. For now, his foster continues to provide him with exactly what he needs: a calm environment, gentle encouragement, and the space to keep building trust.

We’re so proud of how far Theodore has come and look forward to sharing more of his journey as he continues to blossom.

Veery is back at the vet today for a specialized bloodwork (ionized calcium test). This will help determine whether the prednisolone he’s currently on for his suspected IBD/triaditis is also managing his hypercalcemia, or if he’ll need to continue chia seeds alongside the medication.

It’s been a long road for this sweet boy, with many diagnostics along the way – multiple rounds of bloodwork, an ultrasound, and a biopsy – all to rule out possible conditions and get him to a stable place. We’re hopeful that today’s test brings us one step closer to Veery being ready for adoption again soon, alongside his brother Pipit.

At home, the boys continue to keep their fosters smiling. They’ve been trying to find ways to slow Pipit down while eating, and recently introduced a treat puzzle that both brothers really enjoy. They’ve also tried a treat-dispensing ball, though Pipit mostly prefers to cuddle it rather than use it as intended.

Specialized testing and ongoing care like this add up quickly. If you’d like to contribute toward Veery’s veterinary care or our outstanding balance, e-transfers can be sent to [email protected]. Every bit of support makes a real difference – thank you for being part of Veery and Pipit’s journey.

Although Violet and Poppy are available for adoption separately, they would love to be adopted together, and we would love that for them as well.

Believed to be littermates, they were rescued from the same Newington area and found their way to us separately. Once reunited in care, they quickly became fast friends.

Violet and Poppy are slow to warm up to new people, but once you gain their trust, they’ll show you their affectionate side. They enjoy being pet and will happily sit in your lap or curl up beside you. When they aren’t relaxing on their cat perch, they can be found playing, wrestling, and chasing toys together.

They are spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Their adoption fee is $500 if adopted together or $300 individually. If adopted separately, they will need to go to a home with an appropriate feline playmate.

If you’re interested in adopting, please complete our online adoption application: https://www.theaveryfoundation.ca/adoption/adoption-application/cats/

We know the holidays are expensive, and many people are still feeling the impact in the weeks that follow. With the rising cost of living, we understand how hard it can be to support other causes when people themselves are struggling.

We feel bad asking for donations, but the reality is that we can’t keep up with our veterinary expenses or continue our rescue work without community support.

That’s why we’re always looking for low-cost or no-cost ways people can help, and donating empties is one of the easiest.

If you have leftover empties from the holidays, we hope you’ll consider donating them. We accept empty alcohol containers, including beer cans and bottles, wine bottles, and spirit bottles.

Every empty donated helps chip away at our growing vet bills and directly supports cats in our care.

Empties can be dropped off at your convenience at any of our Ottawa locations below, or you can send us a message to arrange a pickup:
- Orléans: 1484 Thurlow Street
- Centretown: 196 Florence Street
- Findlay Creek: 27 Atop Lane
- Manotick: 3416 Barnsdale Road

We’re also always looking for additional drop-off locations and volunteers to help pick up and return empties. If you’re interested in becoming involved in our empties program or learning more, please send us a message.

Another way to support our rescue efforts without additional spending is by joining our FlipGive team. You can earn cashback on purchases you were already planning to make, while helping support the rescue at the same time.

Thank you for supporting us in any way you can – every action adds up.

Our Story

Founded in 2013, The Avery Foundation (TAF) is a non-profit animal rescue managed by a network of coordinators, volunteers, and carefully selected foster families. We are a small group of animal advocates working to change the lives of homeless animals.

Our mission is to help abandoned and vulnerable animals through foster care, rehabilitation, and adoption; to guide potential adopters in finding the best fit for their family; and to promote responsible pet ownership through humane education: specifically of the importance of routine veterinary care, spay/neutering and enrichment - ultimately creating a happy and healthy life for as many animals as possible.

Our volunteers work diligently to raise funds for the animals through events and fundraisers, with every dollar going towards medical bills, food, and supplies.
