A huge bonus of this upcoming session is it is located at Courtenay Veterinary Clinic ~ not only are we building up confidence and foundation work with our baby dogs with our regular material, but they are also having fun in a vet clinic which builds a positive association by going to the vets, something they will definitely all be doing throughout their life! ๐ฉต๐พ
This class is appropriate for puppies ages 10-20 weeks old! ๐ฉต Did your pup miss the age requirement this session? Donโt sweat it ~ we will be running another one in February!
We also have our basic obedience classes coming up if your pup is older than 20 weeks ~ we will work on your pups New Yearโs resolutions of having the best year ever! ๐ฅณ

Run a Mutt
Love them or hate them, fireworks often come to our neighborhoods on holidays. We have put together a few tips and tricks for you to help your Mutt out so they have a less scary experience;
โข Contact your vet a few weeks before the holiday to talk about anti anxiety medication.
โข Exercise your dog the day of to ensure they are tired.
โข Expose them to the sounds beforehand; find a YouTube fireworks playlist.
โข Secure your yard - look for any holes in the fence, lock any opening gates!
โขMake sure they are wearing a collar with ID ~ invest in a GPS collar if possible for them to wear should they become frightened and run. ***Apple AirTags are not a reliable or recommended way to track dogs!***
During the Fireworks;
โข Play Music to help distract their attention from the noise outside.
โข Play a brain game with them, bring out a snuffle mat or frozen stuffed Kong to give them a positive association with the experience.
โข Remember, being relaxed around your pup will give them more confidence that everything is under control, this scary experience too shall pass! Stay neutral and calm ~ if you see them pacing, attach a leash to them to break their focus on the noises outside and redirect their attention back to you.
โข Kennel your dog if they are a flight risk - donโt take the chance!
Enjoy the holiday, hopefully even more now that you have some tricks to help your dog enjoy the day also!

At the end of every year, I like to look back and reflect and put a word or two to how it felt for me. This past year I am calling โexpectations vs realityโ. The year was both wildly better and more successful than I could have ever hoped for, but also had some moments where I had to really dig deep to bring out the resilience that one needs to carry on.
You see, July 20th, 2022 was the worst day of my career. Many of you followed along as the search for Abby spanned 7 days this past Summer. While it was a living nightmare for myself and my team members, it was also a huge learning moment. Seeing the community rally together; people Iโve never even met before step up and help and sacrifice their time was something I will never forget for the rest of my life. Beautiful clients that I all consider friends and family came out and searched the mountain that week. The resources that were offered without a second moment of hesitation. All made me sit back and realize this is truly what community feels like. And of course Abbyโs family, who never once blamed me and fed me during that week and kept up hope. You guys are truly amazing, the strength I saw from you and the determination and love you have for Abby was incredible to watch. Youโre a wonderful pair of humans! ๐ฅฐ
July 27th, 2022 was the best day of my career, when I woke up in the middle of the night to the text that she was found, they got her and theyโre going home! Happiness, exhaustion, and the largest sense of relief carried throughout the rest of the Summer knowing Abby had come home safe. And the amazing thing is that after all that, her mom and dad still put their faith in me again and allowed Abby over for sleepovers and (leashed) hikes while she stayed with me ๐
This was a big year for Run a Mutt as we celebrated the businesses 5th birthday! Many of us went down to Pooch Pool School in August to have a pool party and learn to dock dive ๐
