Soul2Soul Dog Canine skills and behaviour coach for humans! "Hi - my name is Carol Neil. Science tells us that ALL behaviour serves a purpose for every animal.
(17)

I am a professional trainer with the Certification Counsel for Professional Dog Trainers, a Fear Free Certified Professional, a licensed Family Dog Mediator and Founder of the Alberta Force Free Alliance. My mission is to assist and support dog caregivers and their dogs in creating healthy, happy lives together. I will guide and support all family members (human and canine) in navigating the world

of canine behaviour, from puppyhood through adolescense and on up to seniorhood. For this reason, it is absolutely critical that we determine the underlying purpose and root cause of behaviour in order to assist your dog. In many cases, pain and/or medical, at minimum contribute to behavioural concerns, so working closely with your veterinarian is a must."

I see this a lot. Dogs are very stoic and very good at hiding signs of pain. Did you know that there is a high correlation between noise sensitivity/reactivity and pain?

Hannah got Holly when she was 16 weeks old.

The owner of a dog she was treating had taken on two collie puppies, and had since realised he was allergic to their base coat.

He called Hannah to offer them both to her, she was able to adopt just one, Holly.

From that moment on, they did everything together.
They moved around the country, the lived in Germany for a while, they were always on adventures.

It was many years before any issues started to arise for Holly.

During their time in Germany, Holly began reacting negatively to loud noises.

Hannah sought advice from a wide variety of experts, but no one discussed pain.
So Hannah assumed it was down to their disturbed lifestyle, or the collie mentality.

She tried everything to remedy the noise phobia, but it stayed with Holly until she became deaf in later life.

Up until that point, Hannah had to accept that Holly would react like she did, and amend the situation they were in instead of attempting to fix the issue.

It wasn't until much later that Hannah realised the noise phobia was due to Holly being in pain.

The dog-training world is often riddled with misinformation, especially about “natural behaviour of dogs”. One such misconception is that puppies separate from mums early on. But studies on free living dogs in India suggest that puppies stay with their families for a long time and may never separate.

You will see members of the family grooming each other, playing with each other and supporting each other in times of distress. This has to make us wonder, what are they missing out on when separated early.

For instance, try to imagine what humans would miss out on, if they did not have other humans like them when growing up. Or what would other animals miss out on, if they did not grow with conspecifics. This is the kind of food for thought we must be ruminating on for the sake of our dogs.

At BHARCS, lessons from free living dogs is a big part of our course, since may of us share our lives with these dogs. Our students from parts of the world where there are no streeties benefit from our stories, vidoes and observations.

Thus we try to live up to our motto of Learning to Learn from Dogs. If you are interested in this form of learning, which is authentic and straight from the dogs, join Canine Essential 101. https://courses.bharcs.com/

Absolutely! I have been telling my class particpants and clients this for years.

Don’t use leash jerks, and if your dog pulls on leash, walk them on a harness, as research shows the potential pressure applied to a dog’s neck by the use of a flat collar.

Today, I participated in St. Albert’s Paul Kane High School Career Fair, representing the industry of dog training. I have participated previously, taking along my old dog, Luke, who loved and soaked up all of the petting from the kids, but since he has passed on, I invited fellow trainer, Tara Ferguson of 4 Paws in Training of Spruce Grove and her sweet dog, Aurora. ❤️🐾🥰

Dr. Karen Overall is one of my original heroes in this industry. She wrote the manual of Clinical Behavioral Medicine for Dogs and Cats and I have been blessed to have done 2 workshops with her, give a huge hug for inspiring me to start the Alberta Force Free Alliance and gift her an AFFA hoodie with the logo of my dog Cash. I unwittingly used a shock collar on Cash years ago. While the shock suppressed his behaviour in the moment, his behaviour actually became much worse in the long run. He inspired me to begin my education journey, studying with professionals in this industry who educate using scientific, evidence-based approaches with dogs.

To quote Dr. Overall…”When people reach for a shock caller of any kind they're not doing this because they're horrible people. They're not malicious, deviant or psychopaths. They don't hate their dogs. They're not doing it for any of those reasons. They're doing it because they're desperate and they need help.”

Our Story

"Hi - my name is Carol Neil. I am a CPDT-KA with the Certification Counsel for Professional Dog Trainers. I am a Fear Free Certified Professional as well as a member of the Pet Professional Guild and founder of the Alberta Force Free Alliance. My goal is to provide dog owners with factual, scientific-based knowledge on how their dogs think and learn and show them how they can apply this knowledge in order to teach their dogs new behaviours and let go of unwanted behaviours that disrupt or are detrimental to the health and balance of the dog and its family. I use only positive training methods that create and maintain a happy and joyful trust bond between you and your dog (no aversives)"
