What is Rally Obedience aka Rally?
Rally Obedience (RallyO) is intended to promote positive relationships between dogs and owners based on trust and respect. RallyO encourages participation of ALL dogs purebred or mixed breed, pets or titled champions as well as physically-challenged dogs and/or handlers.
ATTITUDE is most important in RallyO. Dogs and handlers "just gotta have fun."
RallyO is a program for dogs and their owners. Dog and handler use directional signs to go through a numbered course within an allotted time.
RallyO is designed so that dogs at all levels of training may participate. A beginner’s course may include heel, sits, turns, pace changes, sit-stay and elements of recall. As the dogs gain skill, more difficult elements are incorporated into the courses which will improve you and your dog’s performance levels and confidence. RallyO is offered by CARO (Canadian Association of Rally Obedience), CKC (Canadian Kennel Club), AKC (American Kennel Club), Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA), C-WAGS, World Cynosport and UKC (United Kennel Club) trials.

ATTITUDE is more important in RallyO than precision. Dogs and handlers "just gotta have fun."
The concept of a single continuous performance, uninterrupted by orders from the judge, demands a sustained communication between the dog and handler. The handler may talk and give hand and body signals to his or her dog throughout the performance. This provides a mental stimulus for the handler as the course outlines are different at each trial.

RallyO is a program for dogs and their owners. Dog and handler use directional signs to go through a numbered course within an allotted time.

RallyO goes beyond basic heeling by interspersing over 40 obedience movements with the sits, turns and paces of traditional heeling. It also requires a brisk pace, positive attitude and happy demeanor.

RallyO is a venue for those who desire an activity that is fun and games. It is not simple or easy, but challenges handlers and dogs in a partnership that improves heeling and teamwork. The ability to work as a team during a RallyO performance, the handler’s ability to maintain the dog's attention and attitude at a high level are all challenges. This, along with variability incorporated into course designs and formats, creates a fast moving continuous performance.

Many dog owners become frustrated with how their dog focuses on distractions rather than their humans. Rather than thinking of the things that your dog wants to get to as distractions try thinking of them as potential REINFORCERS.

For example, let’s say that you have trouble getting your dog to come when called around birds, because your dog loves to chase them. Most owners would say that their dog is distracted by birds, and try to train their dog to ignore the birds. If you understand reinforcers, however, you can USE THE BIRDS TO TRAIN A RECALL.

To do this, you would find a place that your dog can safely chase birds (like a big park far away from any roads) and attach your dog to a long training line. Start far enough away from the birds that your dog is under threshold and able to concentrate and follow the cues that they know. Call them to come, and when they do mark the behaviour with your marker signal of choice (e.g. the spoken marker "yes") and then release your dog to chase the birds as their reward for coming to you. Once they’ve finished chasing the birds reel them in with the long line and begin the exercise again. Gradually you can get closer and closer to the birds.

What "distractions" have you used as reinforcers when training your dogs? Share them in the comments to help your fellow dog geeks with ideas!

For a number of years now I have been drawn to ways to reduce stress for my pets and for my clients (human and animal). So the vet and groomer visits are win-win for everyone involved!
I loved this particular explanation of how a dog feels when the owner or the dog is separated during a vet visit....
" I like think about taking dogs away from owners and inhibition like this: a teenager is walking through the mall by themself and another teen starts talking s**t and they’ve got a friend or two behind them. Most teens would just keep their head down and keep walking bc they lack social support. But you put a group of kids behind them and all of the sudden they’re emboldened to say what they feel. When dogs are with owners, they’ve got the social support to tell us exactly what they think. But when we remove that social support, they’re less likely to resort to aggression because they feel less safe and less supported. It doesn’t change the emotional response. It just shifts the physical reaction to the increased levels of cortisol. At least… that’s what science helps us infer is going on for them."

Cooperative Care techniques motivate me to learn more :)
