Yesterday was a very special day for the Queen of reception at Eastern Shore Veterinarian Hospital !! Happy birthday Joan!!! It is no surprise that she is very popular here at the clinic by both staff and clients.

Though she was supposed to already be retired, her continued dedication and commitment to the health and well being of your pets keeps her coming back everyday - rain or shine. Whether she’s picking up the phone ten minutes before her shift begins, working late finishing paperwork, moving around the busy schedule to try to fit in anyone in dire need, hugging clients after saying goodbye to their loved ones, coming in on days she’s not scheduled to help… the list goes on. She is very special to us and to many of you.

With the cold winter months upon us, let’s talk about protecting your dog’s paws from the weather!

Though fresh snowfall can be fun, winter weather can pose a few risks to your dog’s paws. Snow and ice can increase your dog’s risk of frostbite and dry out their paw pads, leaving them chapped and cracked. Not only are the elements dangerous, sidewalk salt and chemicals can cause burns to their sensitive pads or serious indigestion if licked off. Not to fret! Here is a list of ways you can protect your furry friends all winter:

1) BOOTIES are the best way to protect your dog’s feet. Like human boots, they minimize contact with harsh salts or chemicals and prevent snow, ice and sand from getting stuck between their toes.

2) PETROLEUM JELLY BASED PRODUCTS such as Vaseline or Paw Balm is a great way to create a barrier against snow, ice and salt.

3) WARM TOWELS are a great way to wipe off your dog’s feet before coming back inside. Sidewalks with salt and harsh chemicals can leave a residue that is harmful to their health if ingested.

4) DIPPING PADS IN WARM WATER is also a great way to ensure they are protected after coming in from your winter walk! They also break up and melt any pesky snow clumps that can get stuck between their toes. Just make sure to give them a good dry off as well (your furniture will also thank you!)

Dropping your furry friends off for surgery can be scary! We promise when they’re in our hands they are in the very best care.

Meet Ashley! As one of our Veterinary Technicians, she plays a very important role on our surgery team.

While your pet is under anesthesia, she closely supervises the vital signs and ensures your pet is doing well from start to finish. She also monitors your pet throughout the recovery phase, and warms them with our incubator and blankets. Ashley takes every precaution necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet!

Here, she is keeping one our our very sweet patients, Mrs Sylvia Pickles, warm as she wakes up from her spay.

Everyone meet Onyx! He’s one very handsome boy! His mom, and one of our very awesome clients, Alana very kindly wrote about her recent experience at the clinic.

“I came to Eastern Shore Vet for my newly adopted kitten Onyx. He came to the clinic for his first exam and vaccinations with Dr. Forgeron, and upon arrival we were met with a smiling face, by Annika (the VA). She assisted during the visit, and I think she fell in love with my little boy pretty quick. Onyx didn’t even seem to notice the poking and prodding from the vet. I brought him back a month later for his neuter. I dropped my baby off knowing he was in the best hands. I will be taking my other cat Isla there from now on as the care and service is amazing! Thank you Eastern Shore Vet for all you do for all of our fur babies.”
