The Dalmatian ~ Beloved “Fire House” dog…
One of the most enduring symbols of the fire service is the Dalmatian dog, particularly in England, Canada and the United States.
The Dalmatian is a very physical breed, with a strong, muscular body, and able to run great distances without tiring.
Canine experts are unsure how old the breed is. Some reports date 600+ years. Their roots are often said to trace back to Dalmatia (a region of Croatia) where the first illustrations of the dog have been found.
The Dalmatian, because of its poor hunting abilities, was historically often relegated to the stable area of homes.
It was in these stables that the Dalmatian became acquainted and associated with horses.
The personality of a Dalmatian lends itself naturally to be a calming effect on horses. The Dalmatian as it were became the horse’s pet.
The use of Dalmatians as carriage dogs was then easily transferred to horse-drawn fire engines.
It was during this era of horse drawn fire apparatus that the Dalmatian becomes forever tied to the Fire Service.
Dalmatians were adopted by the fire service in the days of the horse-drawn fire wagons because of their gifted agility and because they were unafraid of the horses.
The Dalmatian, with its superior physical capabilities would often run out in front of the horses and clear the streets for the approaching fire wagon. They were also known to be parked in front of the fire hoses to prevent other fire houses who arrived to the fire later than the first, from switching the hoses around. The first one to the fire was paid for the job. Therefore, Dalmatians played an important role in the fire station.
Horses were eventually replaced by gasoline-driven fire engines, but the Dalmatians, by tradition, have stayed.
In some rare areas you can still see the Dalmatian in the fire station and even still standing proudly on top of the fire engine as it races to another emergency.
Dalmatians are still chosen by many firefighters as pets, in honor of their heroism in the past.
The Dalmatian is also a very loyal breed to its owners, and an admirable foe when challenged.
Overall, the Dalmatian is a loyal, brave and valiant dog.

For the next person who comes to me and says breeders make so much money from over charging and get on the adopt (a potential money pit) don't shop band wagon.......

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $3500 dollars.
POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!
BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?
POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $1200. You reputable breeders are so over priced.
BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way, why don't you try it yourself?
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!
BREEDER: For FREE I can teach you how to do it, and in addition you will have the knowledge to do it again.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!
BREEDER: To start you will need a Female (average cost $4000 and up) and a Male (average cost $4000 and up) or Semen (average $4000 and up). You will need to do Genetic & Health Testing on them, averages about $1500+ per Dog. Lets not forget Progesterone Testings at $88 each, 4-5 needed, C-Section, starting at $1300 if planned, and $3300 at the emergency room, Inseminations at $375, Ultrasounds at $123, X-rays $130, Semen Collections $275, Storage of semen $120/year, Semen Analysis $75, potentially Semen overnight shipping and so on ($4500+). 10+ Hours of traveling to/from a reputable Repro vet $400 per visit, dog sitter while you’re gone $50-75 a day, and provide Daily Care, Feeding of high quality food & suppliments, & Grooming for 2 years of the potential Stud/Dam, (minimal $350 per month) Oh, don’t forget Monthly Prevention, Annual Vet Visits and any other additional Vet Visits.
On top of this if you Show - Entries, Equipment, Travel, hotels, food, certificates, etc. Easily $3-4000/year.
And let’s not forget training…if you’re not good at it, hired help is available, starting at $200 per CGC group class, or $50 for private lessons. And you WILL need many lessons. IF you can do it yourself, $100/month in gas money to take your dog places to socialize & desensitize + $40 in training treats.
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...
BREEDER: For $10,000 you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.
POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.
BREEDER: OK so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 3 weeks to help with delivery, care ( a million loads of laundry) plus weeks afterwards to monitor mum and puppies. You will need to hire a helper so you can catch 4 hours of sleep a night & a puppy walker to exercise your adult dogs.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Five+ weeks?? it's way too much time for me! I have to work.
BREEDER: Plus You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has a unforseen emergency.
BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($88/test ) & C-section($1300-$3300) and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand/tube feeding supplies in case of emergency....
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!
BREEDER: For $5000+ you can buy them.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a Puppy.
BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are No Vacations or Holidays, while you go to visit with family & friends we are home at our dogs side caring for them. It is a no breaks commitment.
THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a Reputable Person/Breeder, you aren’t only purchasing the Puppy but also: Knowledge, Support , Experience, Love, Time, Sacrifices, etc...
**Plus the cost of Life Time Support to the Puppy Owners…
These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg (best case scenario!!!) as a Reputable Breeder who takes on this journey full time!

Breeder Red Flags

Responsible pet ownership starts early, from the minute you source your new family member. Whether you choose a breeder or a rescue, it’s your responsibility to do your research and make a responsible choice.

Without ample research, you are putting yourself and your future puppy at risk for behavioural, medical and other challenges that you may not have bargained for. You may also be supporting someone who is exploiting or harming animals.

We've compiled a list of five "red flags" to watch for:

1. Lacks commitment or knowledge of the breed. Ethical breeders should be knowledgeable about the breed and committed to maintaining its integrity. They do so by carefully selecting a mating pair with excellent conformation, health, temperament, working ability, and alignment with the breed standard. They do not breed any dogs that have not met physical, mental, and sexual maturity. They should be involved in show, work, or sports. They will never advertise color, sizes or other “rarities” over health, temperament and achievements.

If the dogs are advertised as purebred, you should be able to see registration papers. In Canada it is a Federal Offence to sell a puppy as purebred if that animal is not registered or eligible to be registered by an appropriate association.

2. Lack of health testing. Health testing is imperative to help reduce the incidence of genetic diseases in our companion animals. A breeder should be putting animals into the world who are healthy and primed for a good quality of life. This testing is more than a simple vet check and should address joints, heart, genetic diseases, and any issues known to plague the breed. Should your potential breeder state that the breeding pair is health tested, please ask for proof or take your search to ofa.org. The Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals has information and a database of breeding animals and their test results.

3. Socialization and early care. There are some crucial developmental periods for a puppy while in the care of its breeder. If the breeder is not working to provide positive socialization experiences, you may be dealing with behaviour issues for the rest of your dog’s life. The mother’s emotional and nutritional care during pregnancy is also very important to a puppy’s future. A breeder should have a positive, well-researched plan for those important weeks and be able to share this with you.

4. Contracts and screening. Any ethical breeder has waiting lists and will not rush into placement for one of their dogs. A thorough screening of you, your home, the environment, your intentions, and the life you are planning to give the puppy will take place. The reason for this should go without saying – the breeder should want to know where this puppy will end up, and that it will have a great quality of life.

You should be encouraged to do your own screening as well! You should be able to meet the mother and puppies, and see where they are being raised. (Note that it’s normal for the father not to live at the same home, and you may not be able to meet him). Environment plays a huge role in the success of a puppy.

Similarly, there should be a detailed contract. There should always be a “return to breeder” clause. The breeder brought the dog into the world, and should not allow this dog to end up in the shelter system should something in your life change. If your dog is a pet dog, there should be a spay and neuter clause. If it is a breeding candidate, you should both be very clear on if, when, and how that would take place.

5. Operating on volume or fads. If a breeder always seems to have puppies for sale, or puppies that became available all of a sudden, that might seem like great news, right? Wrong!! (Sorry). Ethical breeders plan litters well in advance and often times have waiting lists for their puppies. In some cases a “pet quality” puppy or retired show dog might be available, but there will never be full litters unspoken for.

A reputable breeder will breed healthy dogs to the breed standard, and if they are selling “designer mixes” or breeding exaggerated characteristics – size, shape, coat colours, this tells you that they are not putting health or well-being first. Many of these trends are based on mutations that compromise overall health.

Super proud of Tiny and Kitsune from the last show. Not only did Kitsune get some points toward her grand in conformation but she worked with Tiny in junior confo and Obedience and came out high in class!! Way to go girlie! She has a natural affiliation with dogs and is on the path to owning a long string of competition show dogs in many canine sports in the future. Way to go Team Kits!!

What Is A Breeder?
by Peggy Adamson, - Damasyn Dobermans
1. A Breeder - with a capital B -is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment.
2. A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture, and deep pile carpeting! She gives up the dreams of a long, luxurious cruise in favour of turning that all important Show into this years “vacation”.
3. A Breeder goes without sleep (but never without coffee!) in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little sneeze, wiggle or cry.
4. A Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due or the babies have to be fed at eight. She disregards birth fluids and puts mouth to mouth to save a gasping new-born, literally blowing life into a tiny, helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams.
5. A Breeder’s lap is a marvelous place where generations of proud and noble champions once snoozed.
6. A Breeder’s hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy’s wet nose.
7. A Breeder’s back and knees are usually arthritic from stooping, bending, and sitting in the birthing box, but are strong enough to enable the breeder to Show the next choice pup to a Championship.
8. A Breeder’s shoulders are stooped and often heaped with abuse from competitors, but they’re wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.
9.A Breeder’s arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer.
10. A Breeder’s ears are wondrous things, sometimes red (from being talked about) or strangely shaped (from being pressed against a phone receiver), often deaf to criticism, yet always fine-tuned to the whimper of a sick puppy.
11. A Breeder’s eyes are blurred from pedigree research and sometimes blind to her own dog’s faults, but they are ever so keen to the competitions faults and are always searching for the perfect specimen.
12. A Breeder’s brain is foggy on faces, but it can recall pedigrees faster than an IBM computer. It’s so full of knowledge that sometimes it blows a fuse: it catalogues thousands of good bone, fine ears, and perfect heads…and buries in the soul the failures and the ones that didn’t turn out.
13. Breeder’s heart is often broken, but it beats strongly with hope everlasting… and it’s always in the right place !
14. Oh, yes, there are breeders, and then, there are BREEDERS!!

How the Kong ball was invented.

The Kong toy was invented by accident more than 40 years ago when Joe Markham needed a way to prevent his German Shepherd Fritz from biting on rocks and sticks. Fritz, who Markham adopted as a shelter dog, had worn down his teeth to one-third of the size they should have been.

He was working on his vehicle and tossed an axle stop with an attached bracket on the ground. His dog got hold of it and loved it. He was playing with it joyously, much to Markham’s amusement.

He said to his friend, “What do you think of my new dog toy?”

His friend replied, “Actually, it’s not too pretty. It looks like an earplug from King Kong.”

And the Kong Toy Was Born
