Today is National Grief and Bereavement Day. It's also been three and a half years since the devastating loss of my partner, Riley.

Riley died of an unexpected heart attack. I struggled so much in that first year and dealt with such severe depression. Looking back now, dog walking became so much more than just my job; it was also the thing that got me out of bed, kept me moving, and provided a distraction from the grief. I never tried to stifle or deny what my heart was feeling at that time, but even on the days when I felt completely broken, I still showed up.

And over the last few years as a professional dog walker, I’ve seen my business grow immensely, my network has become wider than I’d ever predicted, and I’m able to provide an amazing life for my daughter, Juniper. In three and a half years, I’ve gone from the lowest and most heartbreaking time in my life, to the most successful and fulfilling. All modesty aside, I’m truly so proud of myself and all I’ve accomplished these last few years.

I still think about Riley every day, but his passing taught me I can get through the toughest times. And as someone who walks dogs for a living, I never underestimate the lessons a dog can teach me either—and there’s one lesson I see every day—in order to move forward, you have to keep walking. So that’s what I do. I walk one step, one block, one leash length at a time.

I’m so grateful to have clients that provide a genuine sense of community, and a daughter who gives me her unwavering support. I truly feel blessed to get to do this work every day!
