2 SPOTS LEFT July 29- August 2

We welcome your children ages 8+ to join us for a fun, inclusive week of horse camp. Located on the edge of Caledonia, our farm is a paradise for children who love animals. Our gentle horses, goats, chickens and cats will provide days of fun and learning. GP Manor houses our crazy guinea pigs that children can visit with throughout the day. We take on a holistic approach, letting kids do what they like best, playing! They will finish each day sweaty, dirty and full of stories. Our indoor arena keeps us out of the sun and rain. We ride and do groundwork with the horses, learning about their communication, care and handling. Children will learn how to be safe around horses and gain skills whether they're practiced horse-people or brand new to the equine world. We take a horse-first approach at New Leaf Farms, so our treatment of the horses is ethical and kind. All camps are facilitated by Melissa, who ensures everyone is included and having fun.

Activities include:
- equine assisted development
- horse behaviour and training
- horsemanship skill building
- horse handling and safety
- animal stewardship
- riding lessons and mounted activities
- crafts and games
- horse grooming and decorating
- only 6-8 participants per week
- lots of one-to-one coaching and development
- horse show on last day of camp for parents

Campers must bring their own lunches and snacks and dress appropriately for the weather. No special equipment is needed for this camp (helmets are available).

Camp hours are 9am-4pm. Cost is $465 (inclusive) per week.

I don't miss the office at all... Until I'm mucking stalls with a 40+ humidex, Chance breaks into the treat bin while Arty presents me with a swollen, bloody nose and Veya tries her swimming skills in our arena trough, flooding the footing.

A very shameless Chance got evicted from the barn along with Veya who was excited to see if the outside trough would fit all 4 of her legs, rather than the 3 she got in the arena 🙄 Ever the lady, Arty took her meds politely and promptly said thank you for her treatment by sneezing blood all over me. Fun! Jokes on her though, I was too sweaty for it to stick 😂 Happy Summer Solstice, this is definitely feeling like the longest day of the year!

They did it!

Artemis was a little reserved when she arrived at New Leaf. She really didn't understand what her new job would be. It was a special day when Emmy first worked with Arty. They connected almost instantly and Arty discovered the magic of little girls. Through the weeks, Emmy continued to build trust and connection with Arty through groundwork and riding preparation. This week, all their work came to fruition with Arty's first ride here 😁 It's so important to remember that relationship building takes time and effort. Now we can start building confidence and skill under saddle for Artemis. Great work Emmy, and everyone who has been putting so much time, effort and love into Arty's transition. As a team, we are making a huge difference in her life!

There were some big feelings for Jamie today. He's back in the saddle- literally- for some riding prep lessons. Jamie has been off for almost a year after our accident, which was caused by an undiagnosed injury at the time. I took a step back from his training as part of my recovery and that probably wasn't the best idea of either of us. For a smart guy like him, it's easy to get bored. And being bored can sometimes translate into being a bit of a... well... a jerk LOL

In our riding prep lessons, the horses work on everything about a riding lesson minus the actual riding. Mounting block alignment, pole work and even having weight in the saddle and stirrups are all part of these lessons. The student/ handler has to stay very tuned into the horse's feelings and reactions to be sure it's a positive experience. There were lots of big yawns, sighs and chewing during the lesson, showing that he's processing lots of information and feelings. It's very important to give the horse time to process his feelings, rather than rushing through. At one point, Jamie's handler stepped back and I climbed the mounting block and leaned over him for the first time in almost year. It was a stressful feeling for both of us, but I took several deep breaths and he gave a huge sigh and snort. I took a minute to scratch his neck and praise him for standing, even when he was stressed. We have a lot of healing to do together, but this was a great start.

Whether Jamie ever carries a rider again, I couldn't care less. Working under saddle will help to channel some of his excess intelligence and build his confidence. With no timeframes or pressure, he can develop and heal at his own pace and more importantly, we can start rebuilding our relationship.

It's been 11 months since I had a major fall from a horse. I'd had some trips, some stumbles and a few mouths of dirt, but never anything like that fall. Concussion, broken ribs, bruises that lasted over a month. I dragged myself through my physical recovery, but my mental state stalled. I just couldn't get back on.

Today I woke up and decided this was the day. I taught a lesson then saddled up Zach. He was very willing as I brought him into the arena. I figured with my weight, he was the obvious choice for this mission. I really only have kids riding these days, and I didn't want to burden the smaller, older horses. My fear was nauseating. Thankfully Crystal had shown up, so I asked her to bring in my #1 man, Andis for support. He's always there for me when I'm struggling, but his body is done with riding, so he did his best to offer encouragement on the ground. I stood for ages at the mounting block, frozen. My accident was at dismount. I couldn't bring myself to get on, because I knew I'd have to get off. I tried a few times, but I just couldn't do it. So frustrating.

I got down from the mounting block and walked back into the barn almost in tears. I am not one who admits defeat easily. As I stood, Spirit called me. She nodded at me to bring her out, so I opened her door and she went into the arena. She stood patiently as I took the saddle from Zach and put it on her. She didn't make a move as I tightened her girth. Normally she hates it. She walked quietly over to the mounting block, looked at me and waited.

When we got Spirit, she was a bit dangerous. She often reared and bucked if pushed. I hired trainers for her, but she never seemed happy, she was always unpredictable and reactive. In desperation, I started intensive groundwork and riding her myself. I was scared of her. I soon found that she was scared of me. Through lots of sweating and deep breaths for both of us, we slowly learned how to trust each other. I learned her signals, and I offered what she asked for. In turn, she gave me effort and patience. Our trust grew and we became friends.

As I climbed the mounting block, I felt my fear melt away. I sat quietly on Spirit's back and she stood still. We did a little walk around the arena. Andis followed closely behind us as Zach dropped to roll in the dirt. Spirit did a quick turn to step on our harrow, and I instinctively guided her back to avoid an accident. I had no time to think, I just reacted. It reminded me that I can do this. Another lesson by Spirit for me. As I made to dismount, I knew I'd be safe. I hopped off, and the first ride after my accident was done. As I unsaddled Spirit, Andis came and touched his nose to my forehead. All the horses sighed and yawned. I took a big breath and thanked them for helping me heal. The chapter of "My Big Fall" has come to a close at last.

Sensitive Souls Camp

The idea of summer camp is a magical, cannon event for many children. Long, hot days making new friends and playing games, learning new skills and generally having fun. It's an awesome experience... for most.

But the reality is, camp can be a nightmare for those of us with neurodivergence. Big crowds can be overstimulating. Rigid agendas can feel constrictive and anxiety producing. Young, untrained facilitators can be unpredictable and get overwhelmed by special needs. Days can drag on forever. Feelings can get hurt and confidence can be damaged. So we've come up with a new idea.

In partnership with Crystal at Finding Feathers, this summer we will be offering a shortened, single day summer camp series for those who need something a little different. Benefits will include:
- shortened days 10:30am-1:30pm
- 2 trained and experienced adult facilitators
- 4-6 children per day
- equine assisted development
- horsemanship skill building
- animal stewardship with our goats, chickens, cats and guinea pigs
- fun, accessible crafts
- musical activities
- breathing and somatic exercises
- non-competitive games and challenges
- horse grooming and decorating

We want to give kids the chance to experience a positive, fun and successful time on the farm. Everyone should have the chance to build magical summer memories.

Children ages 8-14 are welcome to attend, but we do require that they can moderately follow direction and be independent for safety. We welcome those who struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, challenges with focus, mutism (selective and full) and many other exceptional behaviours. Cost is $85/ day.

Available Dates (10:30am- 1:30pm):
Tuesday July 16, 2024
Thursday July 18, 2024
Tuesday August 6, 2024
Thursday August 8, 2024

Artemis has settled in so easily, it's like she's always been here. She's made friends with everyone, horse and human alike! This picture was taken when Willow was feeling pretty worried about the baby raccoons' noisy antics. These two friends quickly calmed each other and were able to have a successful lesson.

You never know which animals will touch your heart. This little guy was the last egg to hatch. I could hear him peeping inside his shell, but he wasn't making progress pipping. For 2 days I obsessively checked for progress, and nothing happened. I went against all the advice and carefully pried a small piece of shell free. He took it from there and hatched himself in minutes.

He was the first to identify as a rooster, crowing a month before any other chick. He's gotten lost multiple times, always making me worry about hawks and other predators getting him. Last week I had to cut apart our Guinea Pig Palace because he wedged himself in the deepest, darkest and most inaccessible corner.

Despite my no more rooster rule, I can't help but love this guy. He's always at the back of the flock, the slowest guy around. Yet, when I pick him up he clucks at the other chicks to give directions. He's a lovely cuddle buddy and never fights me carrying him around. Currently known as "Brown Chick" I'm really struggling to find him a unique name. Any suggestions?
