Update!! The Baker/Bowness Park walk has been moved to Tuesday night next week due to projected thunderstorms on Monday. 🌂 Have a great weekend everyone! Enjoy the sun!

09/05/2024

The first Walk in the Park class starts on Monday in Baker/Bowness Park, and the weather looks to be fairly good! It will still run if we have some sprinkles or light showers.

I am monitoring the bear situation in Griffiths Woods for the second class and will change the location if it hasn't been resolved. Ironically, I was going to cover off some wildlife safety for that class! I will keep everyone updated!

New class announcement!

A Walk in the Park is my new outdoor class that I am launching mid-May. This will be a trainer led walk at various locations throughout the city. We'll discuss different topics related to walking your dog and do a few training exercises, all while taking a nice stroll through some of the scenic places our city has to offer!

This is a great opportunity to get out and keep active with your dog, socialize with other dog parents and hopefully meet some new dog friends!

Details are now on my website. I hope to see some of you in the coming months and my fingers are crossed that we have some beautiful weather for our walks!

Did you know that as of Sept 30th, dog walkers that walk more than 6 dogs off leash will require a Dog Walker Permit in the City of Calgary? If you are considering hiring a dog walker, or have a current one, please make sure that the people you entrust with your dog are complying with this new bylaw. You can read more about it here:

Pet ownership limitations help limit community issues, including the accumulation of pet waste or noise due to excessive barking on properties with a large numbers of cats and/or dogs.

Let's talk about fireworks!

With Canada Day celebrations coming up, I think it's a good time to discuss fireworks and your pets. You may have already noticed some nervousness this week with all the thunderstorms, but fireworks can be even scarier as there really is no context for our pets for the sudden noises.

I want to address a myth that is out there that cuddling and reassuring your dog will 'reinforce' their fear. Complete garbage! You can't reinforce an emotion...it's a primal thing. Think of a time when you had a friend be there for you when you were having a hard time. Did they make things worse by holding your hand and telling you things were going to be ok? Or did you feel better knowing you had someone to support you through it?

When dogs are having a hard time with something, they need us to help them. It's pretty tough for them to navigate the human world. What better way to build trust and bond with your dog, then to support them and build their confidence through the tough times? This applies to everything, not just thunder and fireworks!

So go ahead and pet and talk to your dog through the fireworks. Keep them inside and turn up the TV or stereo. Prepare their most favorite yummy treats and deliver them every time a firework goes off. Play games and keep them engaged with you. Just BE with your dog. Your dog will be more than happy to return the favor when you need an emotional boost down the road!

What is everyone up to this weekend? I'm learning lots at the virtual Dog Behavior Conference. Lots of food for thought, but I'm excited to improve on what I offer all of you in the future!

28/03/2022

Thank you to all of my clients who came out to my classes last night and expressed support! I'll miss all of you, but I hope to have a few outdoor specialty events this spring and summer. I'm already starting to hatch plans for some doggie Olympics! Please keep in touch through my Facebook client group (message me if you can't find it!), otherwise I will send emails as I get things organized. Take care until I see you next! 💕

So proud of the graduates of my Canine Confidence class tonight! Neither of them even batted an eye at the evil teeter totter that we just learned tonight!

15/03/2022

It is with a really heavy heart that I have to announce that my classes are on hiatus after the end of the month. As some of you know, I've had some health issues with one of my dogs and unfortunately, I need to step back from some aspects of my business to care for him. I also have a terminally ill family member that I need to spend time with in the coming months.

I will continue to offer private training and I am hopeful that I will be able to resume classes at some point, however I have no guarantees that I'll be able to retain my current location. If I am able, I would like to try to offer an occasional specialty class throughout the warmer months outdoors.

I have a client group (Pup Culture Dog Training Client Group) for those of you who would like to stay in touch. I absolutely would love to see pictures of your dogs and know how you all are doing. I'm going to miss seeing those adorable faces. Look it up, or message me for a link.

Take care everyone, and let me know if you'd like to be contacted with any upcoming classes down the road. I hope to see as many of you as I can for small dog play classes for the remaining 2 weeks!

13/03/2022

I hope everyone remembered to turn their clocks ahead! I'll see you all one hour sooner for classes tonight!

Happy New Year everyone! This year was another challenging one, but I'm hoping for better things in 2022.

Just a reminder to secure your pups tonight while fireworks are going off. They can be quite scary! It's ok to comfort or snuggle with them. It's a good chance to strengthen your bond by being your dog's hero!

24/12/2021

I wish all of my clients a very Merry Christmas! I hope you all get to spend time with those you love and that you make special memories. I can't wait to see you all again in 2022!! Stay warm!

Lynnette McDonald B.A. (Psych.), CPDT-KA

My dog training journey began in 2012. I had lost my beloved golden retriever of 15 years, and after a few months of missing the companionship, decided to get a new puppy. He was going to be my next best friend, and I was determined to do everything right by him. So I enrolled him in a puppy class, followed by a very intensive training class, as I wanted him to be amazing and they promised that I would be his everything. I didn’t realize back then, that the dog training industry was unregulated, and that anyone could call themselves a trainer. I followed everything I was told to do. I spent hundreds of hours working with him. For some reason though, nothing was working and my dog wasn’t interested in being my best friend. I was devastated.

After adopting my second dog who had some reactivity issues, I decided that I needed to find my own answers. Instead of paying out thousands of dollars for advice from trainers that didn’t seem to work, I invested in educating myself from credible sources backed by research. In 2015 I enrolled in the Cochrane & Area Humane Society’s (CAHS) PACE Program. All of the sudden, everything made sense. Everything that I had learned in university, earning my Psychology degree, actually applied to dogs as well! I hadn’t connected the dots until then.

I went on to teach classes for CAHS for 3 years. I co-created their popular Puppy Play class, and developed their Dog Tricks curriculum. During that time I became certified through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. I also became a Licensed Family Paws Parent Educator, an Associate Trick Dog Instructor and did a grooming apprenticeship at High Tails Pet Resort. I continue to take as many courses as I can, to keep my skills and knowledge up to date. There’s always more to learn!

In 2019 I decided to spend some time doing some private training. Now the opportunity has come up to teach group classes again, and I am so excited! I love to help families and their dogs live together in harmony. I use positive techniques to teach both humans and canines how to have a great relationship based on respect, fun and boundaries. I look forward to meeting you and your dogs!
