Nothing like being born in the frigid cold in between checks. Morzana needed a quick trip to the hot tub to warm up. Camping dry bags for the win to keep her dry. We thought it was perhaps a losing battle but she perked right up and was trying to eat everything before we got the bottle made up for her.

The prep for the cold. Our dry ewe barn is filled with hay mountains and more bales are set out ready to feed out! I’m not going to say I’m ready for what Mother Nature is bringing but at least everyone will have food in their bellies and fresh sheets ready to curl up into!

Purebreds are shorn, new sheets in the hay shed sheep and the goats ladies, freshly cleaned barn for the lambed ewes and Ayden getting some practice in with Bo Duke! It’s been a week, and there is more to be done tomorrow before winter makes an appearance!
These sheep are supposed to be pregnant and they insist on jumping up and helping spread their straw!

Chickens are in the freezer, turkeys are outside in the tractor now!
We have so many ideas and plans to really ramp up our poultry division for next year! This has been a fun and really rewarding farming experience!

Nothing, I really mean nothing, tests your lung capacity and endurance much like a 4yr old when you are mucking out the barn.
We do a lot of it by hand, fork by fork, and my little helper today was talking non stop! Question after question, rapid fire style!
I was super happy when he left to go wrench on his jeep!

For everyone who asks why I, wife of the shearer, doesn’t shear…. This is why! I can’t even run foot trimmers without taking some skin! And this wasn’t even done with the pointy ends, this , my friends, is where the nipper handles come together. I’d even like to say it’s because I was struggling with dull blades or an animal who didn’t think they required a pedicure, not the case! 🤪🤦🏻‍♀️. This is one of those moments where you just need to find the humour in the day!

Exciting times! We are just under a month out from our exptected due dates and this is a ewe lamb (F1) we kept back. I am super excited to see who pops out in a few short weeks. Fingers crossed for some colour as the F1s were all bred to our hamp x Grizzly!

And so it begins…. Markets have been picked out and the taming process is really starting to kick into high gear. The kids had to pick out from our commercial flock again this year, buuutttt that means that they got to pick out an alternate ewe lamb to split. This ewe lamb then gets to go into the kids’ flock after the 4H year and hopefully begin to add to our next generation of shepherds’ success stories.
