Ever wonder why your dog takes so long to sniff around while out for walks? Compared to us humans, your dog’s brain area for detecting smells is 40 times bigger! In their nose they have around 300 million smell receptors for detecting smells, humans have only around 6 million. And not only are they able to detect more smells, but dogs are able to breathe while they are sniffing by separating the breathing air from the smelling air in their nose! 🐶

Giving your dog time during your walks to sniff around is very important for stimulating their brain. It’s also lets them get an understanding of their surroundings, like who has been there and where they have gone. If you find your dog spends too much time sniffing, try motivating them with treats or toys, but be sure that they are able to get some sniff time at the end of their walk. Another option is to take your dog on different types of walks, instead of a walk for exercise you could allow them to lead the walk with their nose and go for a ‘sniff walk’🦮🐕‍🦺

Say hello to Taryn, one of our trusted AdventureTails employees. Taryn is loved by all pets and clients alike as her fun loving attitude and kind heart show through in everything she does 😊😆

Pet care is the perfect job for Taryn because she grew up on farm with many family pets. Taryn has a very strong passion for animal care and loves to provide pet care and educate people on how to enhance their pets lives 🐶😸

While out and about with dogs, Taryn enjoys walking the trails on the Lady Eton Drumlin at Trent. Another place she enjoys walking is Jackson’s Park! 🦮🚶‍♀️

Some local buisness that Taryn love to support include Tiny Greens and House of Scales. And in the Bobcaygeon area Taryn always finds her gel stopping in at Cake by the Lake Bobcaygeon.

Being out in nature is very important to Taryn, so in her free time she likes to head up north and go on canoe trips with her partner and dog TJ 🛶 When she can’t be outside Taryn likes to keep and care for fish 🐠 On top of all that Taryn is also very interested in visual arts such a as photography, painting, and visual arts 📷

AdventureTails is wishing everyone a Happy Canada Day and a lovely long weekend 🇨🇦🎆 We also want to send out a friendly reminder that our pets can find fireworks to be very frightening. While the fireworks are going off over Little Lake tonight, here are some ways to help distress your pets:
- Be sure to walk your dog in sunlight hours, the fireworks will be going off after dark
- Close all windows and blinds to muffle the sounds and to make sure that your pets can’t see the flashes
- Try and mask the sound of the fireworks with calming sounds from the TV or a Radio
- Provide your dog with other stimulation such as food, lick mats, puzzle toys, treats, or even play with them

This warm summer weather sure is nice, but it’s important to remember that ours pets can be very impacted by the hot summer sun ☀️ 🥵 The suns heat can sometimes be too much for our furry friends so it’s important to remember to keep walks short in when the temperature is too hot, try to stay in the shade, and be sure to bring water to keep your dog hydrated. 🦮🚰

Another important tip is to watch your dogs paws pads on the concrete, as it can often get very hot in the summer. Always feel the concrete with your bare hand and if it’s too hot for you to touch, then it’s too hot for your dogs paws. Keep your dog in the grass where possible, and consider getting shoes or peel and stick pads if your dog will tolerate it. Moisturizing daily and using paw wax are other ways to help keep your dogs paw pads from cracking and getting heat sores. 🐾👟

Try walking your dog in the mornings and in the evenings when the sun is not so hot and the air is a little cooler. When the temperature and humidity reach above 35*C, consider other methods or exercising your pet, or bring them somewhere to swim. Indoor play, treat scavenger hunts, lick mats, puzzle toys, and even freezing their food are all great ways to stimulate your dogs physically and mentally without getting them too hot. 💧🧩

We are excited to introduce Erin!! Erin recently moved to Ptbo 3 years ago and has loved being here ever since. Our clients love Erin because of her dedication and fun energetic attitude, not to mention her love of pets!

Dog walking is the perfect job for Erin because she loves working outside under the wide open sky and exploring in nature. Connecting with your pets and earning their trust is another part of the job that Erin just loves, She feels like she gets to spend her days hiking and exploring amongst the company of great friends!

When heading out for a walk in Ptbo, Erin had three favourite destinations to go to. Erin enjoyed walking around Beavermead and the little lake area as it has great scenery. When looking to explore forest trails, Erin loves Jackson’s park and Bears creek woods.

Supporting local is something we love here at AdventureTails, and our Erin loves to support the Silver Bean and the Canoe Company Cafe. Having a drink and walking along the rivers is something that Erin loves to do! Being a plant enthusiast, Erin also enjoys shopping at McKnights for all her plant and gift needs.

In her free time Erin enjoys spending time with her plants, partner and with her bunnies. Erin has an amazing green thumb so she often spends her free time in the garden, wether it be outdoors creating peaceful outdoor space or indoors tending to her extensive (and incredible) plant collection. Erin also enjoys spending quiet time reading or hanging out with her partner and playing computer games or cooking. Erin has four bunnies that she cares for, Penguin, Piggy, Pumpkin and Mulberry, and she loves to give them the best life possible!!

Why do dogs eats grass? 🍃🐶 Does your pup ever start grazing like a cow while you walk? Well here is why:

For a healthy diet, dogs need to consume roughage and grass is a good source of fibre. Without roughage in their diets dogs can have trouble digesting food properly. Eating grass can actually help a dogs bodily functions run more smoothly!

Although most species of dogs now are domesticated and eating kibble, the ancestors of dogs used to balance their diets by eating all of what they hunted. So while that did mostly include meat and bones, it also contained the contents of their preys stomach including grass and plants materials. It has even been found that around 11-47% of wolves also eat grass.

Dogs eat grass because it is part of a balanced diet, and also because they like it. Some dogs simply just enjoy the texture of grass, especially fresh grass in the spring!!

Make sure to always be safe about where you let your dogs graze. Lawns or grassy areas that have been sprayed with pesticides can be very harmful for dogs. Only let them eat grass in areas you know are clean from sprays and chemicals.

Meet dog walker/pet sitter Allegra! She is originally from Vancouver and she is a fur mom to a dog named Marley. Our clients love Allegra because of her fun adventurous spirit!

Allegra loves working for AdventurTails because animals have always been a big love of hers. Meeting your new pets and watching them come out of their shells to be happy and healthy really brightens her day and puts a smile on her face 😄

When out walking in ptbo, Allegra loves heading to Jackson park. She loves being able to decide amongst a variety of trails, from forest to open field. Allegra calls it a “pick your own adventure” type of park! 🥾

If Allegra is headed out to eat with friends she prefers One Fine Food. Being from Vancouver, Allegra finds it reminds her of home, plus she loves to get dressed up nicely with her friends. 🥗

A local business that Allegra loves to support is the Cork and Bean. Allegra loves their cafe and thinks it’s the perfect spot to sit and study. 📚

After a long day of dog walking or on her days off, Allegra loves to cook and try new things. When she isn’t doing that she is hanging out and relaxing with her dog Marley 🐶

Did you know that your dogs breed doesn’t affect their behaviour? 🐕

New studies in genetic research have found that personality is shaped by a combination of factors including your pups environment. No one dog breed owns a certain trait, in fact it was found that dog breed only explains about 9% of the dogs behaviour.

Studies did find that some traits are more common in certain breeds, for example Border Collies seem to be more likely to respond to human commands. However, although traits can be common among dog breeds, researchers found that no behavioural trait was present in all dogs in a certain breed.

Genetic matter in dog breeds, but genetics are only a nudge in a certain direction. Your pup’s personality relies heavily on their environment. No matter the breed, all dogs can be great puppers 🐶

Zoomies!! Most pet owners know about the zoomies. The sudden burst of energy that causes your pet to shoot around the room. But, what are zoomies?

Zoomies are the more common name for what veterinarian know as Frenatic Random Activity Periods (FRAP’s). They are caused by an excess of built up energy.

Zoomies can happen at all times of the day but here are some more common reasons for zoomies:
- just before bed to burn off the last of their energy
- while playing with your pet
- after eating a good meal
- when trying to learn something new

Zoomies are so fun to watch and a great way to blow through energy for our pets. If you find your pet is getting the zoomies too often this could indicate a lack of exercise or stimulation. You can try enrichments toys to keep them entertained or adding more frequent exercise to their routine. If you find yourself too busy, don’t worry, just call up AdventureTails and we can get your pets all zoomied out!!

Check out this website for more information about zoomies: https://www.purina.ca/articles/dog/behaviour/dog-zoomies

Meet Christina, she is outgoing and fun and she always put a smile on client and pet’s faces alike!! 😀🐾

Christina loves dog walking/pet care because it unites her lifelong passion for animals with an ultra positive and exciting work day. She finds herself incredibly lucky to earn her living by hanging out with animals and being in nature all day! Christina thinks animals make her life better and teach her to be the best she can be every day!! 🐶🐱

Having lived in Peterborough for many years, Christina has been able to explore lots of the green spaces. Her favourite places to walk in ptbo are Mark S. Burnham, Rogers Cove/Beavermead, and Jackson park. 🌳

When eating in ptbo, Christina’s go to spots are St. Veronus and Ashburnham Alehouse. Christina finds they both offer a variety of dishes sure to please and loves that they support their local business while providing consistent great quality! 🥗🌽

For Christina, supporting local is always very important and she finds nothing beats the local Farmers Markets. To her it’s about the community and showing support and gratitude to the people who share their goods with us. 👩‍🌾

In her free time Christina loves to read dog related books and learn more about our amazing friends. Christina also loves spending time outdoors with her dog Django and her partner Daniel. Together on their 120 acre property they do lots of gardening, digging and adventuring on their land. In addition to Django, Christina has a blind albino ferret named Hobbes, so hanging at home with her furry friends is another thing she loves to do. 📕🌺

Why walking your dog is so important:

For Their Health - pets need regular and consistent exercise to live long, healthy, and happy lives. It is estimated that 54% of dogs and cats are obese, which increases the risk of many health concerns including diabetes, cancer and dementia. Consistent exercise is also crucial for pumping toxins out of the body.

Minimize Unwanted Dog Behaviour - dogs love to chew and dig and this behaviour is often unwanted in the house. Most of the times, they do these activities out of boredom, and because they have plenty of energy to spend. Frequent lengthy walks help to release excess energy in your dogs, resulting calmer behaviour at home.

Socialization and Stimulation - Your dog gets to see, smell, feel, and hear all types of new and interesting things when out for a walk. Mental stimulation is equally as important for your dogs overall health and happiness. This stimulation often includes meeting other people or animals, which can be an excellent way to encourage proper socialization for your pup.

One of the best ways to keep you dogs healthy and stimulated is to provide a minimum of 3 20+ minutes walks a days. Busy work and life schedules often get in the way of this, but Adventure Tails is here to help! DM us or check out our website and we will work with you to ensure your dog is healthy, stimulated, and most importantly, happy!! 😁🐶

Our Story

Thanks for taking a moment to learn more about Adventure Tails Dog Walking Service! We specialize in one-to-one and group walking adventures, as well as in-home pet sitting for dogs and cats. We offer quality pet care services to cater to your needs.

My business was born out of passion and necessity. There were very few options for pet owners as recently as 10 years ago for pet care, when pet owners needed to travel or work long hours. I was in the same boat, working in a job that took me away from my fur-baby for ten hours a day. How would I ever find someone I trusted enough to care for my baby boy? Other pet owners must be resonating with these same feelings of guilt, worry and fear.

I imagined a company that could provide peace of mind for pet owners. I knew that my vision would allow others to be able to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership, while maintaining their careers, social lives and family time without holding on to the guilt. I gave up my corporate career because of this belief.
