Lorne's Mobile Maple Grove Dog Park Buff Emporium!

Lorne and Sonsie will be carrying Maple Grove Dog Park logo buffs when we are a the park. A $10.00 donation to Maple Grove Dog Park will reward you with the fashion statement of the season. The trick, of course, is to find us! That is problematic since I am a substitute teacher and get last minute calls. If I'm not working I'm usually at the park by 9:00. If I am working, I'm usually there at about 4:30. I will be at the park from 9:00 to 10:30 this Saturday so look for us on the trail!

When it gets a bit warmer I will set up weekend dates in the shelter.

Maple Grove Hinterland Who’s Who # 18 Red Fox

Hi all,
I’m a Red fox…I’m your fox as I like to come into the Maple Grove Dog Park at night after you all go home. I come in when the world is quiet, and I can hear the voles running around in their snow cities. I’ve been here for years! Don’t worry, I never eat dogs. Not even Chihuahuas!

Things may get a little lively as breeding season is right around the corner! My mate has rejoined me and there is likely to be some singing! Some of you saw us this morning near the park. There is one thing I suppose I should apologize for. We gotta mark our territory so that other foxes don’t cut in on our mousing turf and take the food we need for our kits. To do that we will mark the border with musk. It smells great, just a bit like a skunk. Dogs are so jealous they like to roll in it! We usually mark the trees at the northwest part of the park where the old beaver house is. Unlike Skunk our perfume washes out.

I have a series of top-secret underground dens I use. The first one is my whelping den where I give birth in March. Then I have a couple of more that I’ll move my kits to. It doesn’t do to stay in one spot too long. Last year I dug one in the hill by the park gate…but I thought better of it. You know Real Estate: location, location, location!

Right now, I’m a classic beauty with my deep red winter coat, but in the spring, I will be crawling in and out of my den. The opening is very tight so I will rub the hair off of my back and sides. I will also get thin because I’m breastfeeding a bunch of kits. This is normal. Please don’t call Conservation and say I have mange and definitely DO NOT BRING FOOD TO MY DEN! Nothing you have is good for me and my kits. Chicken breasts are no good because we need the whole critter: meat, guts, skeleton and fur/feathers for our digestive system to work. Dog food is for dogs. Foxes who learn to eat human food don’t tend to live long! Besides the food lying around on the ground will attract unwanted attention to my little darlings.

So a big Hi from your neighbour!

Have you ever noticed how the colder weather encourages dogs to play? Sonsie and Oscar had a big game of "Queen of the Mountain" on the snow ridge by the MOD's field today.

And while we're on the subject of sticks...

Sticks like this keep appearing on the roof of the shelter. I'm not sure why, but I have taken them down few times. It may be a small thing but this seems like an obvious safety hazard as it is likely to come down on someone's head so please desist. 😊
